I have come to realise that awards in _all_ industries are given to people that do what they are told and never the outliers. Yet it is always the outliers that create history.

Sometimes they were smart and/or talented but usually no smarter or more talented than the quieter kids who just did whatever it was they did and left the teachers alone. And so it continues, group A giving awards to group B in odd-numbered years, then group B reciprocating in even-numbered years. If it's any comfort, the trophies, diplomas, and tchochkas that are received end up in the trash when the recipient moves on to the next life, which I hope doesn't involve flattering the gatekeeper at heaven.
