So actually the point is to shed weight, a latch should for all intents and purposes be just as secure. The idea is to replace eight to nine pounds with one and a half (your eliminating the springs, hinges and the latch). That said unless something is wrong or you screwed up, they should both keep the hood in place. Also if your really invested the best weight savings come from simply removing the hood and all associated hardware.

Dude. An entire hood latch assembly on my 03 Yukon including cable and springs and even the striker on the hood itself weighs maybe 3 pounds tops... You're better off taking some x-lax and taking a 3 pound shit in the morning before you go race than to delete your hood latch to try and shave weight... Hood latches on jeep wranglers are because they don't have latch assembly built in. Hood pins are quite literally a fail safe mechanism that are a last line of defence in high speed conditions to keep the hood from obstructing your view.

No, that’s not why hood pins exist.
So let say you’ve built a car to race.
You’re going around the track and suddenly there is a fire.
You jump out of the car and attempt to get your hood open.
Are you going to shove your hand up into the gap to grab the scolding hot hood latch or would you rather pull two pins?
Although you should never just rip open the hood in the event of an engine fire but the pins are much less likely to fail to open.
But to say “you know why hood pins exist?”
Then tell some bogus personal story that provided no facts as to why hood pins exist is just nonsense.

Hood pins in a racing application are there so in event of a fire, you do not need access to the cabin of the vehicle to release the hood for fire suppression. Also, high temps can melt a hood release cable. That’s it. Being light is a bonus. That’s why a 200hp rally car has to have them but a 900hp production super car made from composite materials does not. And remember kids, Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements is also an acronym for Rice!

The hood usually breaks the windshield bends around and puts a huge dent in the roof and you can't see shit. Then you instinctively bump the crap out your head on the side glass trying to see around it.

Hood pins were a double feature tool
Keeps the hood from flying off
And when you put locks on it it keeps your engine from being fucked with.

Not even under fast vehicles 😂😅😂I had this happen in my slow Lancer OZ Rally going 40mph. The wind gust kicked under and the right place and exactly at the right time. Hood went flying right off the Coronado Bridge going a turtle slow 40mph… the dude I bought the hood from said I should add pins just to be safe and I said that’s what’s latches at for. Boy did I learn a lesson that day. When you have a light hood, it requires pins especially carbon fiber. Big motors has nothing to do with a light hood not properly being secured.

  • @vernonhoover3060

Older Jeeps, aka Real Jeeps, didn’t have a center latch. They had spring loaded latches on either side. What they have now is mostly a reminiscent reminder, just there to try to bring validity to that huge behemoth that evolved from Jeeps.

Hoods pins where used in Nascar and other forms of racing so that could lift the hood clean off the car to work on the motor. My 1970 plymouth roadrunner had them but it was mainly used to mimic Nascar which back then still used manufactured cars such as the supperbird.

Hood pins do a lot. Race cars don't have hinges or latches to save weight, so hood pins are the only option. With souped up production cars on a circuit, it allows you to open the hood in an emergency without needing to go inside the car. Some aftermarket hoods do not have a latching bar so hood pins are the easiest way to get a functional hood.

It’s not the air going under the hood, it’s the low pressure over the top of it. Same concept as lift for an airfoil like a wing on a plane. They’re pulled up into the air from the top of the wing, not pushed up from the bottom of it

actually the transmission does. engine produces torque , the transmission takes that torque and applies it to rest of drivetrain. take transmission out of car, go red line it. it aint moving
