I've spent the last 7 years in another country,I've had a few experiences not d irectly related to my career but the last 4 years I've had practical training experience in a law firm. Recently (almost 2 months ago) I've decided to return to my home country and I intend to resume my career (as attorney at law/legal advisor). Really employers have a hint as to why there are gaps (discrimination), so they do not usually ask this too often as they probably have done the same to other employees and fell queasy about revisiting the past. Discrimination about salary, age, personal reasons. So yes many people have gaps and it is not their fault.
That's really splashing in the shallow end. A single hiring manager or company isn't what creates gaps in employment for a worker. It would take an industry or discipline wide conspiracy for it to be an issue of discrimination. Here is a simple alternate suggestion: gaps in a worker's history will generally have a correlation to market downturns and corrections. And.. Some workers adapt better than others to how market contractions and expansions create shifts in nuanced skill demand.
What if you were unwell though. Tell an employer that and they'll think you're a risk, even if that's not true. Anyone could become unwell at any point.

I'm 24 and been unemployed for years. I got my first job at a clothing store last October and left in late January when my seasonal position expired. After that I've been unemployed. I've been looking for a job, I almost got hired at Amazon last month but I never received my confirmation email even though they had told me my background and drug test met their requirements. I was going to be hired at UPS a few days after but my dad wouldn't let me go through with it because his friends said UPS was too hard work and I'm a female. He didn't think I was strong enough to work there so I withdrew my application even after I interviewed and was offered to take the warehouse tour. I'm pretty stressed out. UPS might not had been right fir me but at least I would be employed by now.
At 24, you alone should be making your employment decisions. Plenty of females work for UPS. With any job, you are either a fit, you'll grow into it, or you'll move on.
For someone who's still unemployed for years with no achievements, but has some experience and knowledge in programming, I've been keeping myself busy by working on personal projects on the side to keep my skills sharp and updated while searching for a new job. However, I was not successful in finding any clients to do consulting work with them, due to the large volume of other freelancers taking the same jobs that I sent proposals to. Do you think working on personal projects to keep my skills sharp and current the best way to let employers know that I do not sit around and do nothing, despite not doing any consulting work with others despite finding some?
jabames a Exactly! it's such a pretentious unrealistic and illogical need to have no gaps. I think it's just a reason for recruiters to put you down for fun. It doesn't make sense. it's one of those things that when this no-gap-craze does after some years, people will question why it was there in the first place
What if you have gaps in your resume due to disability and health reasons? During my gaps I have been building and I have completed my recording studio and I have been working self-employed. But I'm not so sure how to put that in a resume or talk about that in an interview...
My gap in work/resume is due to my age. I am low 60's in age but can't seem to get hired for positions in management that I know I am very qualified for. In fact, I had 3 online interviews for one company and they were so excited to see me in person, that the hiring manager went out of his way to travel from Dallas to IL for our interview. When we met, his impression was not as enthusiastic as he was on the phone. Made me feel terrible that my age did seem to matter. Sadly I never heard back from them other than the dreaded email stating we are going with a different candidate (I was one of two). But I did see the other candidate as I was walking out and he looked late 40's, early 50's. Very sad indeed as I was hoping to work another 10 years. I have been out of work for 9 months, been on several qualifying management roles and nothing.
It has nothing to do with your age. Im 46 with 23 years in management and i have the same problem. I never failed an interview, i fail.them all now. I noticed they only hire women.
I left my first job after uni because I had to move to the other side of the country because of domestic violence. Then I got a job for 1 single shift before I lost it because it was terminated the first day of London Lockdown in March. I've been unemployed so long I feel like I'll never get a job again and I so desperately want one.
I haven't worked for over 15 years. I was/is raising my son. I have been doing several courses over the years though. I'm currently doing a short course. Then, in a month, I'm doing my last course. I'm also homeschooling my son. So, it's not like I haven't done anything... Being at home with him, is just truly important to me, until he's old enough.

What if you have a 5yr gap? I did a lot of jobs where I got paid under the table, like running the front office at a busy dental clinic. And walking peoples dogs, taking care of their pets and driving, elderly neighbors to the grocery store and running errands for them, cooking and cleaning for them. All of these things were under the table. Do I include them on my résumé?
I was scouted as a model about 3 years ago and have been full time modeling and traveling during that time. Now I want to go back to a traditional job, but it seems so difficult because I have a 3 year gap and don’t think modeling is relevant on my resume :(
Unfortunately employers can’t seem to find a way to handle independent contractors they seem as though we are sort of unreliable when it comes to work ethic
@@johnnytsunami3558 Yes, I did not leave it as a gap. I basically formatted it vaguely as fashion advertising- listing my agency as the employer and role as brand ambassador. In the description I wrote bullet points like “Increased brand publicity by participating in global commercial advertisements, print campaigns and social media marketing” and “Collaborated with both established and contemporary fashion designers to promote new collections on the runway and at red carpet events during Fashion Week” to name a few. It did work and I was hired in 2 weeks at an art and design gallery that I now sell my own products in as a newly formed small business (:
Its such a tough situation, I lost my Travel & Tourism job in Covid-19 pandemic, June 2020, when i came back home i decided i am gonna prepare for some competitive exams and meanwhile i did a diploma as well which doesn't have to do anything with tourism. Now in 2022 i realized i have to go back to tourism industry, preferably the cruise lines sector but its almost 2 years of this gap.. I am hesitant about this gap because the diploma or competitive exams which i gave has nothing to do with tourism and i cannot really blame pandemic lol.
Reason for asking about gaps: 1. If you've been gapless, they expect to ONLY continue the long road of wage increase which isn't much to begin with. Employers don't want to compesate you for being adventurous. 2. If there are gaps, they are expecting a good reason and if that reason means a generous bump in your salary it means they won't choose you simply because they can't afford it or won't. Bottom line: KNOW WHAT THEY ARE OFFERING TO START! because if they are expecting to give you the starting salary of an entry level job, they will hound you of ANY GAPS!
I got so impressed and clicked on the Top Notch Resume in the description down below only to realize I can't afford it LOL Ofcourse shes a Professional and has all the rights to bill the price she wanted..... 🙂❤
There is a 3 year gap on Resume from 2011 - 2013 due to pursued and achieved advanced degrees. I got a job in 2014. Right now there is no explanation in my resume between jobs. I listed my degrees listed in education section. How do I explain the gap of 2011-2013 between jobs on resume? Thanks.
This is how I did, list that advanced degree as a part of your experience: for e.g Master Candidate cum Research assistant, and for job description you can list out your research experience, being an assistant to your professor and how you help them achieve the results, your collaboration with other faculties, universities, companies or government office to achieve you research purpose, tutor experience, seminar, conference or papers you are writing. Actually, they're a lot more you can write. Projects you're involved in your courses. Anything that you think you contributed to the stuff in your research area.
Hi Linda Raynier, I have question. in the video you talk about Gap in Employment, if person took a two year gap from employment because they were going through medical treatment, for example this person had cancer and had to go through chemotherapy for about a year and half, what would be the best way to explain it when it comes to the interview
I was told by a recruiter that my last job was a 1099 tax that was considered a gap in a real job. I argued for 10 minutes that i was responsible for the taxes. I can't ever win.
Paramount is that I hope beyond hope you are safe now. That you are free from that situation and on a path to healing and happiness. In regards to addressing work history, I might state that you assumed a primary caregiver role for a family member suffering from a longterm (and often debilitating) illness. The abuser had the illness, but you suffered from its presence. You were your own caregiver.
What about when the gap in your resume is due to a medical diagnosis and disability that you also don’t want to disclose in an interview because of discrimination?
As for the gap, some of the employers dig deepr in the interviews just to know exactly If you happen to own your business or not otherwise the if you don't have mindset they are looking for they'll straight up throw the CV in the third bucket as lynda says in the video 😉
Hi Linda, thank you for your video. However, I just have a query, actually I'm on situation 2. How do you nicely state if I have been helping in our family business since my unemployment last 2021? thank you in advance for your response
I have been doing a lot of contract work, but it has been leaving me unemployed for long periods of time. Trying to get stable work, but job market has not been good. Not to many employers hiring on a permanent basis. How do I explain to employers? Also, companies will not give me references due to HR issues. Any suggestions?
Jack Hwang it’s been 5 for me. I have been volunteering at an elderly home and went back to school for some computers skills, so I’m going to say that. I’m also switching careers from hairstylist to admin. I actually did hurt my shoulder and can no longer do hair. So idk I guess I’ll say all of those things. Just an FYI I’m not sure how you are doing, but volunteering and going to school were NOT easy for me at all. At the time it was such a struggle, but I feel like they were necessary baby steps before jumping into a job. I have zero confidence though. It’s not easy, hang in there, take care of yourself. 😊
i literally took a year off to focus on my health/well being (mentally, physically and emotionally). it wasn't anything serious health-wise (i had a number of minor health issues due to being a smoker, but if left unchecked could definitely become serious down the road). i essentially felt burned out and wanted to take an extended break...is this acceptable to mention in the interview?
It's never wrong to speak your truth; but remember to "accentuate the positive." Instead of burnout, maybe the role had no room for further growth in the direction you preferred? You didn't have eyes set on a Director's chair, because your passion is the client facing work and not budgets and planning. So after (5+) years, you decided to invest a year in yourself: developing mind, body and spirit. Now you are energized and excited for the next chapter.
Hi Linda. Thanks for the video and all of your other videos because I find them very helpful. I have a question about your point on achievement in 4:08. What do you mean by achievement? Is being one of top employees for a particular month be counted as one? Also, I have gap in employment. I worked for a back office account for few years and I quit that job because I pursued a bachelor's degree but did not finish it until now due to financial reason. I also have trouble in looking for a job maybe because of my confidence issues.
What if you've worked in customer service/contact centers for several years. And interviewer ask "why are you wanting to do retail again?" Unemployed for a little over a year since previous new 4 month contract-to-hire job ended due to Covid-19. Also, I recently worked seasonal Christmas 2021 in retail (1st to call). I'd worked in contact call centers and finance loan establishments for since 2013 (Pre Covid-19). How would I answer this question? Thanks in advance.
Aparecido FERREIRA VAIS Career gap of 7 years due to family issues related to Father's health and care for him. Now am not getting any job. Please help.
The whole things is messed up. I signed up for an entry level job right out of high school and they wanted me to explain to them the gap in my resume. Me simply telling them I just graduated high school and was only allowed to do volunteer work beforehand was not good enough. I signed up for a janitor job after quitting my burger job. I signed up for a bunch of job beforehand for two or three months without success. When asking about the status of my application, they asked me about the gap in my application for which I told them I was job hunting and attending college. That was not good enough. The hospital HR told me to consider working for a burger joint for 5 months and then come back to them for the entry level janitor job. If I didn’t find a well paying seasonal job that didn’t care about a employment gap afterword, I would’ve lost my sh**. That job became permanent and I’ve been climbing the ladder sense.
Hi Ms. Linda. What if I had so many years of gap and haven’t been employed for a long time because I wasn’t physically fit and I didn’t get treatment because I was financially abandoned by my dad. I applied for jobs and didn’t get accepted for medical reasons. Then I pursued my degree for four yrs now I’m ready to apply. But back then I’ve been taking care of my niece nephew and been accepting art projects, case studies and tutorials at home. It didn’t pay well but at least I wanted to do something that helps me contribute to the family and other people. How can I explain that?
I was laid off due to company wide lay off nov 22, my title was Associate director. I then could not find the job that was the best fit for me, after 9 months i finally found a job but for less title, Manager. Should i just NOT include my current manager position in my resume? ... either way it doesnt look good....

I took a year off, because I was financially able to. Didn't really like my job or all the overtime it demanded. Now my year is up and I'm ready to go back to work. What's a good answer for my situation?
I just took off 4 months and ready to get back to work too but Im not openly disclosing I was unemployed. They will automatically disqualify you if you do so Im leaving my last job as current. If they check and see its not then oh well.....next.
It still doesn't help. If they see gaps they will filter you out, even if they are filled with volunteer roles and courses and you say you spent that time on self improvement. Employers are not robots and they do have biases and make unfair assumptions
When you have a work gap because you suddenly became displaced and in between homes, and had to take time to get yourself into a stable situation so that you COULD work…..but you just can’t SAY that on the interview…..

Judging by the dismissive attitude in this video, that would be classified as doing "nothing", though you've been doing far from nothing.

just leave last job current and not look desperate. so many employers won't let you get an interview to explain.
@@asadb1990 just say you still work at your last job. If u are lucky, they wont find out.
In my experience gaps in employment aren’t a bad thing it all. Everyone has them to pursue a degree or just wanting to take some time off. Etc.
Exaclty someone could be involved in Entrepreneurial activities in those gaps..

Any update ? Where'd you end up working ?
For someone who's still unemployed for years with no achievements, but has some experience and knowledge in programming, I've been keeping myself busy by working on personal projects on the side to keep my skills sharp and updated while searching for a new job. However, I was not successful in finding any clients to do consulting work with them, due to the large volume of other freelancers taking the same jobs that I sent proposals to.
Do you think working on personal projects to keep my skills sharp and current the best way to let employers know that I do not sit around and do nothing, despite not doing any consulting work with others despite finding some?
We have to get rid of the idea that gaps in employment makes you not able to get work.
jabames a Exactly! it's such a pretentious unrealistic and illogical need to have no gaps.
This was really helpful, thank you! What about the interview, though? Surely "just looking for a job" doesn't sound any better in person :/
Thank you, Linda; this was right on-time, All Praises to the Father for your video. I have almost a 2yr gap.
Aww. Your super brave... Don't worry something will come up.

THUMB IS UP. It's clear and concise. thank you for this video.

Any update ? What end up happening?
Reason for asking about gaps: 1. If you've been gapless, they expect to ONLY continue the long road of wage increase which isn't much to begin with. Employers don't want to compesate you for being adventurous. 2. If there are gaps, they are expecting a good reason and if that reason means a generous bump in your salary it means they won't choose you simply because they can't afford it or won't. Bottom line: KNOW WHAT THEY ARE OFFERING TO START! because if they are expecting to give you the starting salary of an entry level job, they will hound you of ANY GAPS!
This doesn't even make sense. Gaps should matter less for entry level starting salary jobs, not more.
What if your gap is 25 years. I am a homemaker and want to work again.

Sad that there isn't any answers/replies/comments from anyone still. Did you ever get any input on this, or did you simply get a job?
Higher education and raising children they don't care about that

I’ve had many gaps due to personal issues like domestic violence. How would I explain that without explaining my personal business?

I have been doing a lot of contract work, but it has been leaving me unemployed for long periods of time. Trying to get stable work, but job market has not been good. I've been unemployed for 4 years due to mental health issues and I don't know if I can find a job

Good question?
No. They wont take you for a job because they think you will do the same again. Dont say anything about you needed a break, say nothing about burnout.
You didn't explain how to cover stay at home mom. Illness. Freelance work. Some tips yes but can we get a deep dive?

Hi, Linda Raynier, Amazing Tutorials

It still doesn't help. If they see gaps they will filter you out, even if they are filled with volunteer roles and courses and you say you spent that time on self improvement. Employers are not robots and they do have biases and make unfair assumptions
Does it matter if I haven’t worked for an year or so. Why they need to know. I took a gap from work. Why does that matter to the interviewer
When you have a work gap because you suddenly became displaced and in between homes, and had to take time to get yourself into a stable situation so that you COULD work…..but you just can’t SAY that on the interview…..
