  • I got a 16 mm film copy of this movie. It is copyrighted but I it does not appear that the original copyright owner exists. The Spanish is so simple and clear that I think it may have been made as a language instruction film. My Spanish is bad but I understood more than 90 percent.

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to play a Fleta. It was surprisingly heavy, rigid, and felt large. The craftsmanship did not seem highly refined. But, the results were a magnificent instrument, with a big, resonant voice whose projection was well suited for large Concert Halls. I later spent some time working in a Guitar store that specialized in Concert quality Classical, Flamenco, and Acoustic Guitars from the finest Luthiers all around the World. The Fleta that I played years before stands out in my mind as the best sounding.

I am very happy to see a film about Fleta and sons. I received a new guitar from Fleta in 1969 and have had several used ones since then, and commissioned Kenny Hill to make a series of reproductions based on plans of a 1967 which I supplied. I observe that there is not even one single shot of the bracing pattern in the entire film. Fleta must have regarded. that as a trade secret. The guitar being built looks from the color of the soundboard to be Western Red Cedar. That soundboard wood is much darker than the lightest colors in the Rosette. Perhaps the shellac used in the French polishing was the garnet hue resulting in German Spruce looking as dark as WRC when finished. Shots of the label show 1957 which corresponds to the early days of Fleta's innovative 9-fan bracing pattern. As far as I know WRC had not been introduced as soundboard wood in 1957. Also notable is the confirmation that Fleta used the German style dovetail neck attachment as opposed to the more typical Spanish foot style. I have to wonder if the 1957 label shown is the same guitar being built in the film.

He averiguado sobre la descendencia de Ignacio Fleta Pescador, y no he encontrado iformación. Supongo habrá sido unos de sus hijos, porque Ignasio falleció en 1977. Agradecería me cuentes. Gracias

the title page shows a date of 1974 if my reading of Roman numerals is correct. That fits with my Idea that the 1957 label shown is from an older spruce guitar not the newer Cedar guitar being finished in other parts of the film. Anyone wanting a carefully drafted set of Fleta 9-fan plans might contact me. I think I still have those plans as well as several sets of plans of Ruck designs supplied to me By the late Great Robert Ruck.
