Bravo. One of the best show pieces for opera basses and it was smashing. I just wish opera was still part of the American zeitgeist the way it was for a bit from the 1960s thru , I'm gonna say, the early 1990s. We all need more opera not less, and not of the kind with which the regie-vandals are torturing German opera stages. Mil gracias, paz. Liked / subd / playlisted.
Actually Siepi is only 61 here (he was born Feb 10, ‘23) but who’s counting, right? He sounds as good as he’s ever sounded, and his pitch is more accurate than it was when he was in his 40s.
To stand up to Siepi has got to be the ultimate challenge for a young bass, and Langan meets it! Perhaps not old-sounding or sinister enough (I believe Langan was still in his 20s), but musical, and with excellent diction. It would be interesting to hear the two singers’ roles reversed!
How wonderful to hear this again! I attended one of these performances - my very first Don Carlo. Thanks for sharing this great sample of your artistry.
