- Tomb Raider: The Ride - for centuries, this wonder has captivated man, and lured him into the ancient tombs. To date, numerous explorers have vanished in search of this mysterious treasure. This week, on the Kings Island Blog, we investigate Tomb Raider: The Ride!
A-ha - our first clue! The magic of movies combined with the thrills of a lifetime was the main focus back in the new-millennium for then Paramount’s Kings Island. Kenton’s Cove Keelboat Canal, the park’s 1973 hydroflume ride, operated for the last time in 2000, and was in the process of being removed for something big. As guests made their way to Rivertown, the site was fenced up with boards saying phrases like, “AN EXCITING NEW ADVENTURE IS COMING IN 2002”. Members of the media and American Coaster Enthusiasts were invited to the International Restaurant for an announcement on July 2, 2001. Based on the blockbuster hit Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and the video game series, it was announced that for the 2002 season Kings Island would be getting Tomb Raider: The Ride, a Huss Giant Top Spin - the only one of its kind ever to be built. But at the time of the announcement until opening day, no one knew what kind of ride it would be. The only way to find out was to experience it yourself when it opened.
Billed as a “heavily themed, totally immersive dark ride adventure”, the attraction finally opened to guests on April 5, 2002 after much anticipation. More than just a flat ride in a box, the ride featured many special effects such as lighting, smoke, and water. An original soundtrack was composed by Kings Island Hall of Fame member Rob Pottorf, and cast members from the movies such as Angelina Jolie reprised their roles for the voiceovers.
A-ha! We have found it. The mysterious entrance to Tomb Raider: The Ride. Guests were greeted by a Land Rover Defender, similar to the one Lara Croft drove in the blockbuster movie. We gaze upon a cavernous entrance in Rivertown, beckoning us to explore the unknown. As we walk in, we can see that a bamboo structure has been holding up the site temporarily, but could cave in at any moment. Moving quickly, we reach the antechamber. Stone monkey warriors can be seen guarding the tomb, an authentic prop from the film. All of a sudden, gears are turning and a beam of light hits the Triangle of Light, and aligns itself with the engravings and gem. As the fog dissipates, the door has been opened and leads us into another chamber, guarded by a 17-inch Brahma statue, also from the film. Here, we are given a glimpse into Lara Croft’s story and her mission.
When Cedar Fair purchased Paramount parks in 2006, Tomb Raider: The Ride became The Crypt for the 2008 season. The Crypt would then give its last rides on October 30, 2011.
A-ha! Here it is: the tape we’ve been in search of, with the entire story of Tomb Raider: The Ride, from many, many years ago! Let’s look at it, shall we?

One of the biggest losses in park history. A truly special experience. Dream come true if this ride were possible again. Privileged to have been able to ride AND remember the ride despite being so young
All they have to do is take the same carnival ride and put it in a dark room
I second that, those two times I rode it are still fresh on my mind. They had something special.
Never checked it out when it became the crypt.
It's INSANE, it was my favorite ride in the park along with Vortex and FoF, the teeming, music, ride, all of it was just perfectly executed...
I'd say probably the 5th biggest loss in park history.
1. Original Bat
2. Son of Beast
3. Vortex
4. King Cobra
5. Tomb Raider/Crypt
This was such a cool ride.
This ride has fascinated me for years. I was born in 01 so I never got to experience it. I never thought in my wildest dreams I would find footage of that dang pre-show video. Thank you so much for sharing this footage of this fascinating dark ride adventure
Was born in 98 got to ride it, you missed out on a lot of nausea
Damn you missed out on the golden age of rollercoasters my friend. It was pretty insane practically every year new coasters at parks. Ohio had it so good back then with Kings Island, Cedar Point and Six Flags Ohio/WoA.... Cedar Fair and Six Flags should burn in hell for what they did to that park and that local community. Removing such a classic amusement park just so they couldn't compete against Cedar Point. I blame Six Flags for selling it to them. They should have predicted what that outcome would be. Cooperate GREED.
To experience a Top Spin of this magnitude, nonetheless fully themed and enclosed, must have been absolutely incredible. I envy those who took the journey!
I took the journey in it's original state as this video shows. It was THE BEST and IS THE BES flat ride to have ever existed. There was nothing like it. And even with the coasters at Kings Island at the time, this was my favorite ride there.
In its original form, this ride was my all time favorite. It was perfect.
Me too. I I stanned it. I still talk about what my current friends missed out on.
Is it a RoLLaR CoAsTeR?!? NOooO0O!!!
I love this! I never rode Tomb Raider, but I appreciate just what a magnificent thing it was when it was operating. That THEMING! 🤩
Actually a great top spin ride due to the really great theming. One of the few good things Paramount did for the park.
This was still in operation while I was a ride op and I had the absolute privilege of being able to both work it AND ride it many times during my time KI and it is EASILY my absolute favorite ride. Working Antechamber and Pre-Show was sometimes more fun than working the actually ride because you got to interact with the guests. Seeing first time riders was always fun, especially when they didn't know what they were getting into!! Some of the best memories I have come from that ride. Kings Island had a total gem on their hands. I just hope they do something more with the building.
Those giant set pieces are just sitting there wasting away I bet
@HauntFreak13 I don't know how much is unused but the show building is still used around Haunt! From what I can tell, (wasn't around when the ride was open) the stuff you see during it is still in good condition too!
You cannot capture the feeling of 60+ people all being hung upside down, dropping down slowly into the lava shooting up and misting your face on video, some things just have to be experienced.
This ride looked so cool and I wish I could’ve ridden it… I’m glad that we have this video to get a taste of what it was like to experience this thrilling attraction!
This and Phantom Theater are the two defunct attractions that have intrigued me the most, while I was too young to experience them.
Kings Island, when it was owned by Paramount, was amazing.
@@Goneril26 I wonder what the park would be like today if Paramount still owned it. Don't get me wrong, the park is still amazing, but I miss these themed rides!
Best attraction the park ever had and then Paramount and Cedar Fair let it go to pot. I was a full-time employee at Kings Island when TRTD was opened. I remember being in a photo shoot for the ride, they sat about a dozen of us in the middle section to make it look full and a photographer was on the ride with us and he had a camera duct taped to his hand so it would not fall off. We were on the ride for like 2 hours straight, not always in motion, many times they stopped it in certain positions or upside down to get photos. I was in the photo used in several travel magazines and the poster that was used in the Larosas pizza restaurants around town. It was fun. Was sorry to see such an amazing themed attraction gutted like it was just a few short years after opening.
Not true. It was a prototype. It had issues. It was out of the control of Paramount and Cedar Fair.
BINGO. Someone else finally agrees with me. This is the absolute best ride in KI history. Then Cedar Fair destroyed it.
@@blamm5348Mostly it is Cedar Fairs fault. That 9 inversion cycle on the ride in 2008 as its first year of The Crypt DESTROYED it. The ride wasnt built to handle such an intense cycle. Plus the fact that it was never weatherproofed, from its time as Tomb Raider with the lava (water) and fog effects also did damage. Mostly though that 9 inversion cycle decimated it.
This deserves way more views and appreciation. Whoever put in the work digging through the archives to edit and put together all this footage even including the original main theme and such, this is really a great showcase of what once was for those like myself who never got to experience it. Thank you so much!
I rode this several times and there's nothing like it. One time, at a point when everyone was hanging upside down, this dude yelled "MY VAS DEFERENS!"😂
this is so cool! love seeing the construction and work that goes into making these rides.
I loved working this ride as a supervisor! so much fun
BRING IT BACK!
Being held upside down over that lava was always an exhilarating experience.
I'm also fascinated by this amazing ride, and the fact that it only operated for 3 years as TR before becoming the Crypt. I know the giant top spin is long gone, but what exactly is still in the building? The goddess statue? The stalactite/icicles? The fire pit? Does anyone have pictures of it as it is now?
I would love to just be able to go inside that building and take a look around.
Just about everything is still there. The icicles are gone but the statue as well as the rock work behind the ride/lava pits are still there. I would pay anything to see it with the lights on!
ive been inside, they use it for a house during haunt season, when i go this year ill have to be on the lookout for the remaining parts
At one time, this was my favorite thing at KI. I didn't even know what it was the first time I rode it. LOL. Truly immersive!
I love this! I've never seen this footage before. This was an amazing ride! I miss it so much! ❤️
My all time favorite flat ride. There was nothing like it. Its first couple of years when the effects worked. It was just sooo amazing. Sad my friends could never understand the love I havd for the greatest flat ride experience ever to have existed.
The "Jeffrey Siebert" era of Kings Island. The best PR person that park has ever had!
I loved this ride! Thank you for sharing this footage!
Miss that ride
I really hope they reopen something awesome in this queue
We need some son of beast archive videos! POV and behind the scenes construction!

This used to be one of my favorite rides. Nothing like it!!!
The Giant Topspin is gone, but the Madhouse is wild.
A madhouse would be a horrible replacement.
Once it became The Crypt, it lost all of it's excitement. It was just a shell of it's original self. Sad too. The theming was excellent. Now, it just sits there all abandoned, relegated to a Haunt attraction a couple months out of the season. What a waste. I'd love to see something done with that building/space.
it's so cool to still be able to go in there futing haunt and actually still see the big statue on the wall when in the actual haunt
Bring it back!!! Bring it back!!!
This is AMAZING.
Oh heck yes! Tomb Raider the Ride. The ride, that is based on the movie, which is based on the Game Franchise. I did enjoy this ride. X3
It is one of the best things to come in the time that Kings Island was under ownership by Paramount. X3
I’ve always been fascinated by the history of kings island and one of my favorite memory’s of kings island is when I did the holoTween event for Madam Fatals cavern of terror. If you don’t know this is the Haunt that is in the show building for the Tomb Rader Ride. Anyways during the HoloTween event they had the lights on in the show building and I was shocked to see that most of the theming was still there! I was exploding with Excitement I may have pulled back a few Curtains to see some more of the theming, sorry kings island. I wish I could have experienced Kings island when It was ran by Paramount so I could have rode this and Backlot stunt coaster when It was Italian Job stunt track. Buy the way you should do a video just like this but with Italian Job stunt track. :D.
Got to ride it once and I definitely didn't truly appreciate it then. So sad that the building has just been sitting there.
Such a shame this ride got removed it was so fun
I wish there was more footage of the actual top spin itself!!!! That thing is big. Also the rarest credit I have.
What a sad empty building
Loved this ride. First time coming to kings island and I think a few years later it was gone ☹️
FYI, the music from this ride now plays at Adventure Express.
One of my biggest regrets was never riding this ride. Tomb Raider was my most favorite game ever and i loved the movie. Im glad I got to see the outside set at least.
I got to ride this in 2011 after the Tomb Raider theming was removed and the ride cycle was gutted. Was still pretty thrilling, can’t imagine what it would have been like with all the theming.
Why not bring this back and call it something else? It's so sad that the building is just sitting there and only used during Haunt.
I felt something pill in my side the second time I rode this
I wish I could have ridden that. Heavy theming is really cool like Flight of fear and Backlot.
Great ride.
I rode this when it first opened. Scared me to death. I was 8
That is cool
Wish theyd adapt this and bring it back. Now its just sitting there empty like an actual tomb lol
wish it didn’t get token down
I remember this being my sister favorite ride and one time she took me on it when I was young but they should bring it back or one like it!!!
I really wish you guys would bring this back.
I appreciate the additions of Banshee & Mystic Timbers but Cedar Fair is slowly stripping away all of the unique rides that used to make kings island a one of a kind destination park. Tomb Raider, Vortex, Firehawk, Backwards Racer, Son of Beast...
Please reopen this, it doesn't even have to themed, I just desperatly want the enclosed ride to reopen.
Cedar Fair isn't stripping away nothing lol, they can't keep "the tomb raider theme". It'd be copyright. Vortex had parts that were hard to get and honestly past due its time. Son Of The Beast, it was gone before Cedar Fair took over I'm pretty sure lol I think everyone knows the bad construction to it, that it wasn't going to last much longer. Lastly, Firehawk is really the only ride worth mentioning. But I'm glad we got Orion more then Firehawk. Because Firehawk was down 9/10.
SOB was a freaking nightmare....glad its gone. Vortex was a bitch to maintain.
@@MrSbfan2000vortex was removed due to metal fatigue. Im dam certain of it.
@@jaredbrickles9691they actually had the licensing to use the theming until 2016. But Dick Kinzel was an asshole and ruined the ride.
I rode this ride many times. It was cool but had lots of maintenance issues.
I have an idea request for you. You could use the crypt building for an interactive roller coaster experience by triotech. The crypt unsealed.
Are you gonna upload Nickelodeon Splat City next? Also cool ride!
Buy the rights from paramount and bring this back. It was my favorite ride 😢
3:27 I'm really annoyed and upset that, that person's t shirt label is sticking up. If only I could travel back in time to tell him.
A Disney quality ride is abandoned in the building next to the beast entrance
The actual ride itself is no longer in the building and was removed in the 2011-2012 offseason.
Such an awesome attraction! And I hate Top Spin rides.
Impressive theming is it still there today? As in for haunt
Why did it close?
this is triggering LOL....in a good way.....this was my first job at Kings Island.....We were training for a ride they wouldnt tell us what it was LOL.....All we knew was it went upside down. That was it LOL.....
It would be bad ads if you could put the Pirate ship ride in here for a uniquely awesome experience with the lighting, sound, and acoustics.
Or put a scrambler in there with lighting and the umf umf music you hear at the nightclubs with the poppers. Please don't regulate this architectural gem with just a seasonal haunted house ♥️♥️♥️
What the heck is up with that intro narration?
Hiiiii
Those Who Want A Rmc Son Of Beast
👇
Strobe warning on that opening sequence filter!!!! Seriously
This ride made so many people puke. Lotsa cleanup delays.
That is sounds good on paper right?
It was amazing until they lost the rights to tomb raider
@@brandenarnett7162 it wasn't mainly that though, it was more the machine its self, the thing was huge and was basically ripping its self a apart, Huss (the makers of the ride) probably had no intentions to make a giant top spin, I got a the feeling it was a one off custom made ride for the park that they had to quickly run off and design.
@@xsm5525 it wasnt the first, and I believe the outdoor one still runs, although rethemed
@@brandenarnett7162nope, this was the only giant top spin ever built. There was no outdoor giant top spin. Only this one.
@@pizzafroth1521 kings island 2002-2011
Kings dominion (outdoor version "suspended top spin") 2005-2019
Lost a great flume ride for this heap.
Really, kids, it was all foreplay, no climax.
I wish you had more of the offride footage like you had at the end!
tfw 2002 was 50 years ago
Screw you Cedar Fair for destroying one of the best rides on Earth.
I did have an idea for Kings Island like a storyline that would bring back rides from the past but in a modern take to them such as: this ride/the Crypt, phantom theater, Son of Beast, Vortex and Firehawk but dont know if they would do something like that with the direction they are going.
