The scariest part to me is when Chernabog throws those demons in the fires. Here they are, dancing the most wild and incessant dance to worship and please their master, he raises them in his hands, seemingly amused by their dance, and yet he still tosses them down like garbage to be disposed of, with burning them alive seemingly giving him more joy than their dance could ever bring. And how do the other demons react? Do they recoil in fear? Do they dance harder to avoid the same fate? Nope, they revel in the display, seemingly just as gleeful as their master was to do it. There's such a lack of morality, and of empathy that it's truly terrifying. And even if it's not most, there certainly are humans who could steep to this level of maliciousness, and that is also terrifying.

@@jestersareawesome4332 Disney is shit at adapting their previous works. Or any works these days for that matter. They would just ruin it. The only good that would come from a Fantasia remake, would be so people can see it, and then watch the original to see how much better it is.
Good vs Evil Light vs Dark That is the message trying to convey, Evil does not like Light which is why night is referred to as the witching hour. It was a daring masterpiece of art at its time.
Yes. Sort of only vaugely reminiscent of the original story of the piece, which is about a coven of witches holding sabbath with the souls of the dead on a cursed mountain.
@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 Look up Hexennacht on the Brocken. Probably the origin of this imagery; the Germans believed witches celebrated the impending arrival of spring with sinful disportments on the mountain top on the night of April 30th.
Yes, I am from the Harz mountains in Germany and this has similarities to "Walpurgisnacht" on the "Blocksberg". Maybe, someone of the writers had read Goethes Faust I?
Chernabog is the literal God of evil in the myths he hails from But that is just business noting personal look at him trowing a party for the dead peeps
This is a beautiful piece. The whole segment. It goes more than just in one direction. It's so epic. Perhaps this even surpasses THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE. I imagine this is how Old Scratch conjures up his minions and how they carry out his will. All the Disney villains are following him. It was confusing at first, but now I know why the Nostalgia Critic put him at the top of the Disney Villains List.
Question for all those who say they were traumatized by this as a kid - If you're really so traumatized, WHY do you keep coming back here to watch it *AGAIN?*
William Craig One movie that traumatized me as a child was Watership Down, that scene of the rabbits getting torn apart by dogs stuck with me even though I eventually forgot the move title/the move all together. THEN I watched it in HS for class, but I was curious to see if it was really as scary as my younger self had thought. Some stuff still is as scary as it was when you were a kid, some is not.
I was 8 when this came out in the '70s. I was in the movie theater with my dad and older brother. The whole sequence scared the crap out of me. I tried to hold on as long as I could, but then I finally indicated to my dad that I was outta there. So...he and I walk up the ramp out of that screening room. We go out to the hallway. He tells me to 'stay here.'...and walks back in to sit with my brother. Don't judge. It was the 70s. Children had less supervision back then...and we liked it that way, thank you very much. Me...I'm kinda peeking through the cracks of the door to see when it was 'safe' to go back in. Didn't budge until the "Ava Maria' sequence came on....then I managed to get the doors open, walked back down the aisle, and sat back in my seat....of course now its my favorite....but seriously.. what he does to those fire people is pretty messed up. That was my breaking point.
The two little girls in our family ...me and my sister...loved it. Scared the crap out of my older brother. I think he's still mad about how much this movie scared him as a child.
I swear, if I ever become a manager, I’ll put this music on my phone to play over the stores intercom if a Karen ever demands that I bring her the manager
I don't understand why people say this traumatized them when they were young. Personally, when I was a child, I loved this part. Night on Bald Mountain was and still is my favorite piece to this day.
Years ago...had an acquaintance whose family came from a town, not far from the real' Bald Mountain' or inspired this piece. He had visited the area 3 times...and said that even on the Nicest Days..the Mountain gave him the F'n Creeps'''and on a stormy late Autumn Night...it was just too Fr'kn eerie....that the lightening would just give it a Greenish Tint upon it. when it would flash..
4:46 Then tell me, Maria Why I see her dancing there Why her smoldering eyes still scorch my soul I feel her, I see her The sun caught in her raven hair Is blazing in me out of all control
Everyone saying "this scene scared the shit out of me when i was a kid" well that's kinda the point i mean that guy is supose to be the devil after all
***** Listen you can call him whatever you want but let's look at this: You have a dark winged horned creature with devil like minions dancing around and the only thing that stops him is a choir singing the Ave Maria so yeah that's the devil
You're right on all counts. But too many people have very limited knowledge and their views are simplistic (dare I say cartoonish?) When they jabber, I hear the mother in Waterboy: "It's the debbil!"
Don't be so pugnacious, not to mention ill-informed. He was only stating a simple mythological fact. Fantasia is a cartoon, drawing on a range of stories and universal icons.
that moment when Chenobog unfurles his wings and flicks them out with a slight shoulder snap, the music swells and oh my god its SO GOOD. the devil takes one night a year off and this is what he does to unwind.
Technically, he's not a devil. Chernobog is a god out of Slavic mythology, a deity of evil and the night. He's associated with darkness, misfortune and malevolence. His name in Old Church Slavonic literally means "black god".
I remember always skipping this scene when I was little. I was a really sensitive kid, lol. Then when I got a little older, I was able to watch it without having the creeps.
Take issue with your statement that "this movie was never intended to be viewed by children in the first place" My argument to the contrary; Micky Mouse as the Sorcerer's Apprentice. It is true however that when the Bald Mountain sequence came on, parents fled the isles with their young ones, and puddles were frequent.
I watched this as a kid! This one, the one with Dionysus, the pegasus and then all the centaurs were my favorite animations. I binged Fantasia a LOT growing up and it made me appreciate classical music. Then as a teen it made me appreciate it more because I learned Bela Lugosi actually did the modeling for the Chernabog/monster in the mountain.
Nah, Disney shouldn't be trying to slip it in there as a kid's feature on Disney + when the film was originally intended for an adult audience in the 30's. But I digress, they intentionally get away with much worse.
Its quite sad that some people would boycott something like this these days, even thou this is regarded by many such as Spielberg as the best Disney movie of all time. I looove this movie, and have loved it since a very young kid. Apparently Chernabog is supposed to be 15 feet tall, according to Google. There is no fricken way this dude's only 15 feet tall. He's literally the size of the mountain.
Shapeshifter? I mean, the dude's plucking ghosts from the grave and transforming fire women into pigs, it's not too far out of the realm of possibility.

When Disney was creating the show, Gargoyles, they based some of the character’s designs on Chernabog. The character, Goliath, especially has a striking resemblance

" No idea hotface, probably the light from the moo-hey is the peak moving?!" -"Yeah looks li-OH MY GOD!" "God ain't got nothing to do with THAT!!"
My dad took me to see Fantasia. He had seen it in 1939 and loved it. Night on Bald Mountain made the biggest impression on me. I would constantly draw pictures based on the skeletal horses and ghosts.
Pixel Fyxe that's exactly why Disney sucks now, they sold out. They make nothing but disposable films now, I haven't watched a Disney film since the 90's lol! I think it is wrong, they're just greedy corporate scumbags now.
For a while they were releasing some of their animated classics--Lion King, Beauty and the Beast--in 3D, and they looked quite good. But the later releases didn't do as well as Lion King, and they aborted plans to do more. I'd have LOVED for them to do Fantasia in 3D if only to see Night on Bald Mountain in glorious 3D IMAX! More to the point--there's been talk of doing a live-action feature inspired by this segment. I kind of like the idea. If they set it in the 1800s, focused on the legend of Walpurgis Night and the demon Chernabog, and how the villagers react to it...it could have sort of a Hammer Horror vibe. The only problem is that now we'll never get to hear Sir Christopher Lee voice Chernabog.
Chernabog is, contrary to popular belief, not a bad guy. I mean, yeah, he summons the spirits of the dead and literal demons, but then what does he do? He has them dance and revel, before sending them back, not harming a living soul. Chernabog is a goddamn DJ.
I was freaking obsessed with this song as a kid! I just heard it again and all the memories are rushing back. :D like this song is legit my childhood and I love it!
Chernabog: *Flies up in front of the moon* Random Guy: Look it's Batman! Crowd: *Cheers* Random Guy: Wait, Batman's not part of Disney. RUN! Another Random Guy: Wait!. Disney just brought DC. Crowd: *Cheers again*

Old school Disney making something sincerely dark? You don't say? Lol... Even the queen/witch in Snow White was quite dark, and that's like their oldest animated film. But also check out The Black Cauldron. Now *that's* dark.
Disney wants to remake THIS into a live-action movie?!
How the hell are they going to pull that off?
I'd just do it as a CGI short. The original was made to show the beauty of hand drawn animation, a remake could show the beauty of CGI
@Deuce Moncura your being sarcastic, right?
@@jestersareawesome4332 They could just do a Fantasia in CGI with other music.
@@jestersareawesome4332 Disney is shit at adapting their previous works. Or any works these days for that matter. They would just ruin it. The only good that would come from a Fantasia remake, would be so people can see it, and then watch the original to see how much better it is.
Especially now a days people are such pussies.
I cannot imagine what it must have felt like to watch this on the big screen in 1940.
Good vs Evil
Light vs Dark
That is the message trying to convey, Evil does not like Light which is why night is referred to as the witching hour. It was a daring masterpiece of art at its time.
Watching as an adult: Are...are the souls of the damned flying toward hell?!

Question for all those who say they were traumatized by this as a kid -
If you're really so traumatized, WHY do you keep coming back here to watch it *AGAIN?*
Because we're humans.
You might want to read the book.
Cause everybody wants to party like the devil.
+William Craig I loved this as a kid. Only two movies traumatized me as a kid,
the black hole and excorsist
8:04 me when my mom turns my bedroom light on in the morning
I'm incredibly soft for how his folded wings become the massive mountaintop, and then the transition into ave maria.

Chernabog was all like. Ooh, this guy’s lusting. I know exactly how to make this more painful for him.
He is Satan after all.
Honestly this one of the best animated sequences made by Disney ever also love that chernabog is in the Disney villains lineup
+Marko Radokicik true and also the fact that demons r praising and worshiping him also signifies that he is infact the devil himself.
He is based on the slavic night god
According do a documentary on Fantasia, Walt never intended it to be too scary for kids, he wanted it to be unsettling and eerie.
"This is too scary! Children shouldn't watch it!"
"Why? The ghosts? Witches? Demons? Hellfire?"
"NO! Because the boobies have NIPPLES!"

Nah, Disney shouldn't be trying to slip it in there as a kid's feature on Disney + when the film was originally intended for an adult audience in the 30's. But I digress, they intentionally get away with much worse.
They censored some in this theatrical cut too lol
This has gone down in history as one of the greatest pieces of animation for a damn good reason.
This clip has more class and beauty in it than much of what Disney has put out for the past decade. Thank you for posting it.

He was already in KH. Not the easiest boss battle but he wasn't that much of an obstacle
Marcos Celes shit how would you even fight him? Something similar to the Nameless King or Seath the Scaleless?
TheWarriorPriest because of the size, I think it should be more like Seath. But harder, cuz Seath is a shitty boss.
You need to have the black knight sword to do good damage to him and good arumor for when he attacks
I think he would make a good Lord of Cinder from game 3. This way he's diminished after Linking the Fire and you actually stand a chance against him. Perhaps he grew smaller from the Linking as well.
Timeless masterpiece, thank you so much for uploading this gem here!
When Disney was creating the show, Gargoyles, they based some of the character’s designs on Chernabog. The character, Goliath, especially has a striking resemblance

"Fantasia" was a truly brilliant animation.
My dad took me to see Fantasia. He had seen it in 1939 and loved it. Night on Bald Mountain made the biggest impression on me. I would constantly draw pictures based on the skeletal horses and ghosts.

too bad they do everything in 3d now
Hopefully they realize that they could make big bucks off a 2d film via advertising it with big emphasis on nostalgia
Yeah its so annoying now :/
Pixel Fyxe that's exactly why Disney sucks now, they sold out. They make nothing but disposable films now, I haven't watched a Disney film since the 90's lol! I think it is wrong, they're just greedy corporate scumbags now.
Can you imagine what a 3D version of this video would be like?
So beautiful, the figures holding the golden lights at the end have given me a beautiful psychedelic spiritual feeling since I was 4
Chernabog is, contrary to popular belief, not a bad guy. I mean, yeah, he summons the spirits of the dead and literal demons, but then what does he do? He has them dance and revel, before sending them back, not harming a living soul.
Chernabog is a goddamn DJ.
