- Are Stereo Paired HomePods good enough to replace a Home Theatre Sound System with the Apple TV? We hit play on our Zoom H6 audio recorder and compared both setups. Let's see what conclusions we can pull from this test.

AppleInsider The only stereo pair of speakers that I know of that can compete with that surround system you have are a pair of Devialet Phantoms.
Umm the home theater system with its surround sound, well sounds much better. Duh. If you paid $2500 that is one thing. But you can buy a theatre system for around $1000. The other thing is you get the option to connect almost anything to a theatre system. You don't with the HomePods. So you could connect a game console, cable box, or almost anything else can connect to a theatre system. HomePods only option is AirPlay 2. That's it.
Denon wireless HEOS speakers sound better than Sonos.
So two small speakers are less loud than six big speakers.
Bjørn Molstad who would of thought.
=DD whahaa best comment )) wtf you looking for SOUND QUALITY OR LOUD SOUND
@@skorpeonful well, the klipsches are both louder and have better max db. But thats pretty obvious
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 no joke...
not just that they sound worse.
This is a pointless comparason.
Next comparison : iPhone headphones vs $2,500 Home Theatre System 🤑
Next comparison: a lamp vs. a half eaten Snickers bar.
2.5k is just enough for an amp only
Would love to see a re-test now that they support atmos!
I have 5. One day I thought, I wonder how 5 places like a 5.1 system would sound. WOW,... humongous sound. It lacks mids to me,...but it's still incredible. You place one for the middle channel...two fronts, two rears. Like I said,...for the size of these speakers,...WOW.
Dude - balance the volume between the two systems before you do any comparison.
The sound quality of the HomePods is amazing. So here, we are comparing the volume difference. The recorder was set manually to not blow out when the home theatre was playing. We kept the same settings when the HomePods were playing, so this video shows you the actual volume difference we experienced in real life.
The stereo HomePods were seriously lacking, we just didn't feel immersed in the movies.
AppleInsider But, most of your viewers were interpreting the comparison to be one of sound quality. A valid comparison of quality cannot be done unless volumes are equalized. Variant systems will always have different volumes under any circumstance.
AppleInsider guys obviously there is a volume difference. The preamp on the system is leaps and bounds more powerful then that of a HomePod. Plus RUclips audio with whatever codec it’s in is not a fair comparison.
It’s not because the sound source is set to 5.1 on the Apple TV and there’s no rear central or bass channel so your missing those sound sources where as if it set to stereo it mixes it down and is louder 🤔
Huge volume difference. HomePods can be loud enough to hear a movie. The video chosen should have been loud on the HomePod so that the volume could be about equal to the sound system. Otherwise the huge volume difference made the comparison worthless.
bb1111116 we tried many movies. The result is the same. When the Apple TV outputs a film the homepods only put out maybe 60% of the volume they have when playing music. This is something to do with the Apple TV.
bb1111116 The Homepods could never be loud enough. They are weak midling speakers. It's easy to produce good sound at low volume. But the set-up of.the Homepods while decent just don't have the power nor the ability to move enough air to sound good at higher volumes. And that's besides the fact that Homepods just aren't powerful enough to produce undistorted sounds loudly.
cloud fall21 Regardless, the Devialet Gold Phantoms would be a better Comparison.
cloud fall21 even a pair of silver phantoms which you could get for the price of your 2500 sound system would be a fairer comparison.
Thanks. I appreciate this review because it convinced me not to waste my money on the HomePods. I know the HP sound good compared to blueTooth speakers but they just aren't versatile enough for 700 for two. Not interested in spending more money on Apple music. Will go with SONOS. Guess lots of people think the same.
What if you try 7 homepods in that room vs 2,500 Home Theater setup.
Is this late April fools or what?
Next video, is a going to be Ferrari vs Toyota Camry, which is faster?
Next up, Paper airplane vs real airplane.

Don't get me wrong, I like a good "why not give it a shot" comparison. This would have been a more effective/worthwhile/useful video if you compared those soundbars you talked about instead of giving anecdotal evidence though. Also, like you said, maybe with a 40-55'' tv in a more "typical room" and maybe throw in the crazy one at the end. This was an extensive video that showed a result we all already knew would happen.
Saved me $700. Thanks.
I believe you should have used 4 HomePods .
That would have been much better for your huge room.
Most people I know , are more than satisfied with a single HomePod.
Apple doesn’t support 4 speakers yet
Good to know how homepods compare to a consumer hi-fi
I like this video. Perfect for people who are considering using home pods for movies, now they've made a better decision
hahahah nice sarcasm, this is the stupidest comparison I've ever seen
Great Video !! .. Volume on audio system & homepods should have been made on equal level .. Then the comparison should have been more easier to understand and perceivable .. Homepods doesn't even have a slim chance to win this one but I really wanted to see how far Homepod (smart speakers in small size) has come ..
Don’t look at it as a comparison but as a reality of situation. No, it will not compare to any descent home theater system, but it will show you what to expect with 2 HomePods set up in stereo used as a 2.0 channel as a home theater setup. This will answer some questions for some novice people on what directions to take or not to take in certain aspects of what they wish to accomplish.
New home pod alert 🚨. Hope to see a comparison videos like this with the new ones
We all know the sound output from the system would be greater probably by 5-8 times. Sound quality i think would be a better comparison here. HomePod stereo pair would work a lot better in a smaller room like a bedroom. The HomePod just wasn’t designed to be like a boom box/sound blaster, its smooth sound quality over sound output which is why it cant distort and is so small.
I use my 2 HomePods at ~70% volume with a 10' projection and have no issues with the volume.
Would it make a difference if you paired 4 HomePods aside from the 2 in this video to emulate 1 per corner?
Jason Ong it won’t work, AirPlay 2 can only Support two HomePod at the same time.
Y M Nahh it can support multiple
Ferry Gunadi huh? Why are you even saying all this?
Ferry Gunadi omg I’m really sorry it’s my fucking dumbass brother
Alan Charly it can support multiple? Like up to 4?
How’s HomePod compare to Dolby Atomos soundbars?
Allan Sh that’s a more fair
comparison!
The amount of dislikes on this video lol. You can’t compare those lmao. The HomePod is really good but it cannot be compared to those tall speakers
I have 5. One day I thought, I wonder how 5 places like a 5.1 system would sound. WOW,... humongous sound. It lacks mids to me,...but it's still incredible. You place one for the middle channel...two fronts, two rears. Like I said,...for the size of these speakers,...WOW.
OH! THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW!!!
Probably would make more sense to compare home pods to something in the same price range.
Good video A new suscriptor from Dominican Republic 🇩🇴
Holy shut, never would of thought max would do a video for anyone but his own channels.
Ridiculous comparison. Unsubbed.
I’m not sure what is more embarrassing: the comparison results, or the idea to make this comparison in the first place.
I’m really considering pairing these new homepods for my epson projector in my future media room. Jokes on everyone because I’ll save myself about $4,000-$6000 just using the apple tv and these speakers. In a small room these sound amazing. The pair of both their 4’ subs together make bass sound so balanced and good. Be content with what you have. Save your money. Life isn’t about being in a dark room where you spend $10,000 in.
as expected i guess, but you could have had a better source as you say!
Couple of questions:
1. Why did you watch on different volumes?
2. Why did you watch youtube video instead of a AppleTV movie that has Dolby Atmos?
I wish I had your home studio :o
Maybe the low volume is a bug in the first beta? Would have been nice to hear some music at normal sound level from the homepods too. We cannot hear the surround sound anyways.
Thanks for this as I was intending to use the HomePod the way you proposed and through your experimentation I take your recommendation to get a normal sound bar for my new TV.
The comparison we've been waiting for.
I had dreams of using four HomePods as this amazing stereo system but videos like this are kinda deflating that.
Try again after the dolby atmos update
Comparison to 50” TV statement was really helpful. Don’t have any system now so not worth it. Wondering if the speakers were placed to either side of listeners - if experience would be step up from TV alone.
Can you link 4 homepods together? Hell, link 6 of them up if you’re comparing it to THAT sound system...
I was hoping that the Homepod would be sufficient to replace my holder stereo system that includes a woofer, but unfortunately it just doesn't. I purchased the Homepod last night, and while I like the convenience of Siri demands, I'm not "blown away" by the sound. I would need to purchase another Homepod to get closer to the stereo system. I know that's obvious, but I was hoping the technology of the Homepod would indeed bounce off the walls as claimed and give a stereo effect. To me it doesn't. I'll keep my Homepod because of current and future Siri features, but it's not going to replace my stereo system.
Hmmm those $20 earbuds just didn't sound as good as my Sennheiser HD 800 S
One of the first videos on RUclips detailing the HomePods lack of volume for movies played from an Apple TV. So thank you for that. Anyone here think Apple could increase movie volume on the HomePod with a future update?
I actually played around with the settings after reading some of the comments. For those of you who think the volume of your stereo HomePods is too low, go into your audio settings and switch the audio output to stereo. And if that wasn’t enough choose the reduce loud noises option in the drop down menu. Surprisingly this also made the overall sound louder. I was able to hear dialogue a lot more clearer. Hope this helps
This video should be renamed to "Hey guys look at my big Polk Audio speakers!"
HomePod is simply designed for music playback not for video play back, yet can be used (as one of Apple believes is to create a grea music experience).. 2. you comparing as you mentioned an insane 3500bucks comparing to 700(2 homepods), plus how much more space your 5.1 need is incomparable ) 3. If I may be quite rude, your bar is for deaf people, homepod is more than enough loudn + is just about sound quality (that crispness from the bar sometimes is too itchy for ear) again, different people different rooms, different preferences...... but one thing to remember HomePod is been designed for Music not Movies mainly ;) My square 5ft room is brilliant with a pair of HomePod ) is bouncing back amazingly
The only stereo pair of speakers that I know of that can compete with that surround system you have are a pair of Devialet Phantoms.
Is there a reason you made no attempt to equalize the volume of the two speaker system? Ridiculously bad comparative test. Plus, other than the subwoofer, who evaluates speakers with multimedia setups? Why not try music?
Fail.
For the money of the home system you could buy 5 more HomePods to add to the stereo and $50 spare. But I think the limit of connectable HomePods is 4 so you buy 2 more HomePods, Apple TV, and a nice tv.
That LIFEBoy1000 Or spend $1400 on muchhh better home theatre speakers
Same problem, when Apple TV 4K connected with HomePod, the volume is too low, so I switch to the Bluetooth speaker. Seems it’s the Apple TV AirPlay’s problem.
It sounded like the separate HomePods volume was low.
Question, why the heck did you not used the movie from iTunes?
I clicked on the video again just to see the ratio of thumbs up vs down. Makes sense.
This is just awful. You could have at the very least set the home theater to stereo only. You set up an experiment that was beyond unfair. It would be like having an arm wrestling contest between a 25 year old man and a 3 year old and act as if the outcome is in doubt. You stacked the deck!
Now the new version present 2022 😍
Why do it with RUclips? Weird.
Apple needs to go ahead and make their own projector/audio system.
Макс, это было весело. Не делай так больше)))
This is just sad
ur front speakers are angeled far too much
on the other hand a great comparison. Apple homepods or any multiroom solution is just for low backround music, and nothing else. So glad u showed the world that expected something else
It's a good thing you used a shitty Polk audio setup for comparison otherwise it could've been much worse for the pods lol.
I want 6 HomePods for a surround system for AppleTV
Can I instal a pair of Apple HOMEPOD and a second pair of HOMEPOD MINI to the same Apple tv 4k? The HOMEPOD will go on the back and the HOMEPOD MINI on the front?
You should make a comparison to a similar prized home theater system
This is a very strange comparison... of course two small speakers are going to be quieter than a whole home theatre setup... also I don’t recall Apple actually claiming that they HomePod simulates surround sound... they did claim that the sound would automatically be calibrated to fill the room. There is a difference. I’d love to see a comparison between a stereo HomePod pair, and a similarly priced STEREO home theatre setup. This comparison would be a lot more accurate, as it would show people two options at the one price point. Just my thoughts 🤷🏻♂️
They still held up pretty well
Why would you even consider comparing the HomePod with a full av set up
A $300 speaker versus a $2,500 entertainment system. I'm much more interested in knowing how well this work in a small room or in a bedroom sitting on my nightstand right next to me while I'm watching a movie on my iPad
I didn't even know such a speaker existed. :)
So find a video with better volume? Or turn the volume down for the surround set up
Hiya
Great video.
I’m considering buying 2 HomePods plus Apple TV as you suggested. One question , my current TV 6 years old has HDMI but not ARC HDMI . From my understanding to use the Apple TV and set up with HomePod you need to have the ARC HDMI is that correct?
And if so it means I also need a new TV lol
HAHAHAAHAHHAAHAAHA the homepods sounded puny compared to the big guns hahaaha
you should compare them at same sound level
6 minutes that arent coming back.. couldn’t finish the video... i guess i enjoyed the comments more
Did you make sure you turned the volume up on the homepods using the buttons on them
Hi can you please do the same with the audio spacing to check the difference 😊
0:50 ~ Wow. #Onkyo really is the best quality price ratio on the market. ~ Master Degrees.
I was living in apartments, if not i would have had the Onkyo and not explored #reflective_sound. Bang Olufson is reflective sound like my ears, not sure if the tuning matches, yet shapes are attractive.
The #Onkyo secret is the #Subwoofer, usually 2" larger than their competitors: if 6, then 8; if 8 then 10; and so on. #Onkyo understood that for low frequency bass noise, when directional limited by the shape of #ConCave, then diameter or surface of air displacement supersedes any digital wizardry, is all digital wizardry exists freely to whatever decoder or #receiver might exist.
5:15 ~ space. That is the typical audio magazine advice, build off center. Yet the same mistake they suggest you copied. Equal lateral sound placement, when they were working on audio bloom, or maximum volume, what you want is a sense of spacial reality. ~ With this Atmos software, and Apple #HomePod audio pick up, plus compact size, being in equal distance 2 channel from the corners might produce better results. ~ The home theater standard came from 5 channels and needing the center channel to not cancel itself out.
Off center #HomeTheater, is to avoid the center channel speaking being cancelled out by the left and right copy of the same audio.
I don’t have Homepods nor am I an apologist. Though we can’t get a proper Analysis of your tests both form listening to RUclips output of speakers. And from playing RUclips streamed airplay versus an actual movie file.
Here’s a config. Question. I want to use a two-HomePod theatre setup with my Apple TV 4K. Will this still work if I use a Philipps hue sync box that sync up my lighting with what’s plugged into the TV?
That sound system loooks awesome I own The signature Series setup I’m just wondering what db volume is the subwoofer setup?
What a wast of time dude
So can the homepod be used as a soundbar with a smart tv that has airplay 2? I am not talking about “apple tv” but just a smart tv with airplay 2 compatible tv.
OK, your comparison is ridiculous but for the price of a pair of Homepods here in Oz (~$500 ea), you can easily put together a 2.0 stereo system that will leave Apple fanboy wondering why they bothered to buy two and I expect that would be even easier in the US. Music - minus the sub - would have been a much fairer comparison but clearly you wanted to make a point.
Compare this to a Sonos Beam.
I'll put the home pods in a bedroom but not for the front room. Definitely a huge difference
Best review! Subscribing!
Awesome thank you!
@@AppleInsiderhaha idiot
Compare it to a stereo pair of Devialet Phantom.
This was a stupid test. There should have been audio compensation so the 2 units were equal. The homepod can be quite loud. That is not demonstrated in this test.
you need to volume level match them first mate ;)
This video is specifically meant to show the difference in volume.
IMHO, it's a very unbalanced/unfair comparison. The homepods should be compared to the likes of Sonos or Heos which are also wireless and similarly priced depending on the spec. What you've done is the equivalent of comparing a 27" WiDi display to a 85" 4K TV ;)
It hurts to see the white fabric get touched lol
HomePod was very quiet. Is that normal?
No, they can get really loud....
Makes sense since they are a lot smaller than your main setup. Thanks!
Cand Lurn no
A pair of Homepods are 700 dollars. Personally I would just get a Elac Uni-fi ub5 with a good amp and nice sub. Not a fan of surround sound.
You should have recorded in binaural. It would provide us the fill experience with headphones
What screen is that? Did you make it or buy it?
I would like to see an update concerning the hompod updat 14.2 and share experience :)
Me too, I own 2 HomePods but have never had any soundbar or sound system before so I can't tell how good the 2x HomePods setup is but here is what I can tell you:
1/ setup is super easy and wireless (aside from power cords)
2/ sound is very loud both music and movie, you should not have any problem with normal size living room.
3/ sound does not distort at 90% or even more.
4/ I can hear a lot more details than tv speaker.
2 years later, HomePod just supported Dolby Atmos
You mentioned your system was an Atmos system at around 1:10 into the video. Sorry, but you don't have enough speakers to be considered an Atmos system. It's just 5.1.
ruclips.net/video/PAA_Wll7cFM/видео.html
I'm not questioning the Apple TV now being able to support Atmos. But in order for your home theater to actually be an Atmos System, you have to have an Atmos processor on your end, enough power amps and speakers to comply with Atmos specs.
A 5.1 system is just standard 5.1 and it can play back a variety of 5.1 formats like Dolby Digital AC3, or DTS Digital, but Atmos isn't 5.1. You can build an Atmos system from a 5.1 setup, but you need additional speakers, etc. By Default, Atmos is a 7.1.4. Meaning, 7 speakers full range speakers, 1 sub, and 4 overhead. Those would include Front right/left, center, right/left side, right/left rear, sub, and then 4 overhead speakers. You need to buy more speakers/amp and Atmos processor that takes the signal from the Apple 4K box.
Also, if you want your system to sound a LOT better. I would contact a company that has good LF absorption technology, midrange/high frequency absorption, etc. May I suggest calling Acoustic Fields. they have the best Low Frequency absorption products on the market as they are effective down to as low as 30hz. I've been in a room with their products and the result is vastly different than other products on the market. Plus, you might have to pull your speakers away from the front wall and make necessary changes to the listening position, etc. It's worth the money and effort if you want to really hear your system at it's best.
You might be able to get them to send you evaluation units to check out.
The problem with untreated rooms is that most small rooms have problems in the lower frequencies, and too many reflections simply blur the speech, music and effects for a home theater or 2 channel listening. When you start putting more full range speakers in the room, it creates a lot of problems with room modes that can only be addressed with proper low frequency treatment.
your neighbor would love you with a homepod
Great review!
