David K it’s completely staged, I’ve worked at an airshow and seen this rehearsed. There are multiple variations of the story, but a “thief” gets a cub and takes off
That was entertaining and that "farmer" is a hell of a good pilot. My dad said after WWII his brother-in-law had a Piper Cub like this one and he used to take my dad flying in it. I guess his brother in law used to do rolls and loops in it too and my dad said he'd hold his hands on the ceiling as stunts were being done in it. His in-law was a tail gunner in a B24 in WWII and made it to, I believe, 35 or 40 missions. They kept upping the number before you could be released and he was one of the few crews that made it.
Mr father was a farmer and several times a year the grain merchant, Silver Bore, would call in to discuss everything. My mother adored him. IT was only when he died and at his funeral we found out he had flown 28 missions over Germany. What a beautiful modest man.
No, it's not because of the corona virus that you aren't going to airshows. It's because Bill Gates CREATED a minimally invasive virus, and has been commissioned to force a vaccine on all Americans and people abroad to usher in a one world government. That's what's really happening. So instead of "missing airshows", why don't you direct your efforts and anger toward this asshole and assist those of us who are trying to stop him. Don't think for a minute this virus was an accident. They are counting on people to believe the official narrative. Go study up on Bill Gates, and you'll find a world of information out there that the main stream media wishes you didn't know.
I saw an airshow act like this when I was a kid only they handed out tickets to win a free flight lesson. I desperately wanted to win. The “Student” who won got into the airplane and “accidentally” took off. The best part was when the student came flying along the viewing stands, cut power, and yelled “Help” out the open door. It was 50 years ago and I still remembered it like I was there!
My family went to Rhinebeck in 1970. As a young boy I was amazed at it all, and it inspired a lifelong passion for aircraft and history. I am so glad you guys are still here 50 years later...
The flying farmer routine is a classic airshow act dating back to the 1950s, nearly always done in a Cub. It’s campy but always entertaining...and the “farmer” is always an excellent stick.
They’ve been doing this show at Old Rheinbeck for at least 20 years. As a pilot, I can tell you just landing at that field is a challenge for a lot of pilots, never mind doing stunts.
That was soooooo funny I busted a gut laughing really made my day I watched it twice. Thanks for posting it. Very entertaining. Stay healthy everyone we will get through this together.
I realised immediately that this was a comedy routine (I've seen a similar one online) BUT when the aircraft headed towards the trees my heart was LITERALLY in my mouth. Fantastic display and a wonderful part of the air-show.
@@adamsmith5913 Volunteer worker at the Aerodrome here. It's a combination of the lens and the optical illusion that the field affords. It looks like they're going right into the trees, but in fact there's plenty of room to spare.

Most entertaining and brilliant flying I have ever seen apart from a War Birds display at Duxford Uk. I was astonished that a Cub could do such manoeuvres. Thank you Mr Farmer
that was the best gag for the audience, I seen. Air shows are kind of boring and this spiced it up some. The best is when he had the clothesline attached to aircraft
What a great show. You just knew the farmer is part of the act, but man the suspense is palpable. That's one heck of a pilot. Hat's Mr. Hammond hat's off sir! Hope I spelled your name correctly. Wow.
@@erinhammond8599 I went to the show this past weekend, I honestly wasn't totally sure if he was part of the show or not until they taxied the Piper over and they said he could go for a plane ride in it. I live just north of Albany and know waaay too many farmers who really wouldn't give a second though to cutting down trees in the middle of an airshow then storming over to yell at the folks in the announcers tower about how they have work to do.

This is at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck NY! This routine has been done there ever since before I was even born. I'm 57 now. My Dad recalled seeing it here in his younger years. He used to work with the founder of this little airport and airshow within.

(I'm a pilot)..Got me wondering until he rotated the aircraft and went "vertical"...I knew then the whole thing was "staged". (Great pilot in a Great and Fun aircraft.)
reminds me of the tricks my dad and his pals would play on each other at their model airplane field. They would switch tags (indicating frequency) on a guy and let him think he was taking up his airplane but another guy would be controlling it.
Heck, i didn't realise you could throw a cub around like that! It takes some serious skill to fly that badly... I would say 'hats off' to him, but he picked it up again at the end anyway! xD
It’s pretty obvious that it’s a show, nobody was freaking out in the audience, and he’s a pretty dang good pilot
He's been 'stealing' it since at least 1981!
They did this routine back in the 70’s.
Dang?
@@sm7fbj476: He's a fucking good pilot.
I guess those years of crop dusting came in handy if he even did that.
A moment of silence for those that thought this was real

This is what I miss about airshows, sadly thanks to coronavirus I cant go to any more, this was hilarious, nice camera work too
Thanks! Yes unfortunately I believe some of the air shows I wanted to attend soon will be canceled 🙁
i feel you.....

they aren’t ruining anything, its too obvious for anyone to think this is real. unless they have the mind of a 6 year old
Look bud I was havin a good laugh because my cousin thought it was real until he saw the comments.
But then that is clickbait
That’s what I hate about this video. It’s clickbait.

That is some really precise flying, daaang.

Yes it was!! There is a GoPro video of this routine, from the cockpit. Very awesome stuff
It was! I had seen the act a dozen times with Stan in the 80s. It still makes me ill to watch the mastery of the Cub!
@@Chaackaviationandtrainvideos where can I find the cockpit video?

Kyle Franklin does a similar show in a Piper Super Cub. "It takes a lot of work", he told an interviewer, "to fly that badly."
Gta be like
I think the title ought to be “WW2 ace has his tractor nicked by air show steward”
He then gets angry, yanks on a cub to see what it can withstand, throws out pilot's smelly sandwitch and does stunts.

I visited this place with my Uncle one time just randomly. Ended up taking a back seat flight in an open air cockpit biplane. Was fookin amazing.
This farmer is to be commended. With just one lesson, he did aerial acrobatics that even experienced pilot's couldn't do.
I saw this show back in '78! The farmer was suspended from a wire and picked up by a plane with a hook. (a dummy was substituted at the last minute.
I think you're thinking of the "escaped convict" that they picked up. Also Trudy Truelove.
Lol I love this! I remember in England somewhere they do an airshow where an old Grandma steals a plane!
First went to Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in the late 1960's early 1970's and went back many times. Great show
For a second I thought it was real until they let him in
