  • Watch me re-design NBA Finals posters so that they have some ENERGY!
I used Adobe Photoshop 2024 in this video. No pen or tablet was used, however I use a Huion Tablet for all my editing and design work.
Basketball Posters need some energy, to hype up the fans especially during the playoffs. Please leave feedback.

Great work. I laughed at the end because I work for the NBA and the LA v. Warriors graphic is actually one I did. We have to follow certain guidelines and restrictions for tune ins but you did amazing. Keep going!

Hey man, really great video and in a lot of things I agree with you. However, this is how the NBA wants to distribute their information. Not all social media graphics they put out demand that much of an edit or cinematic/movie poster-like approach. Some graphics are simply infographics, straight to the point with key information people should know. There's only some select games that get more treatment on their designs. Also, the designers do not get 100% free creativity to do what they want. They are given guidelines to follow and the work usually ends up being revised a couple times. Also, from my understanding, these templates and poster designs need to be pumped out regularly and with very short turnaround times for like 2 to 3 versions of each. On top of that, the NBA has a certain aesthetic they need to maintain to make the whole profile and feed look cohesive and so you can pinpoint exactly that that's a graphic from the NBA in the middle of so many others in social media. That's basically part of a brand's identity. You need to use clean images of the players, can't be altering their features and all that like drawing a joker face on Jokic. Ultimately, photo manipulations just take longer to make and gather resource imagery, can't be done on a daily basis.
1:14 I mean isn't that what the graphic is supposed to show and tell us? It is also very well composed and balanced. Easy to see and read all the info. The types of edits you're trying to do are great but usually are the ones these corps will commission every once in a while to a handful of freelance designers. It's stuff that I would probably see on Bleacher Report and not the NBA's page. Which is great anyways. These aren't the things done with "in-house" designers because there's much more to do in such little time. You also gotta think of adding all the sponsor logos and everything.
The examples you used from 0:30 to 0:35 are from the same guy that did the graphic at 0:48 of the Bucks vs Suns. The examples from 0:30 and the one from 0:48 were both featured in the NBA page. They need to put out graphics to inform people of dates and times of games and that can't be done in a movie-poster manner or the info gets lost.
I noticed on your IG that you don't follow this guy but the guy I'm talking about is @EthanJDesign. He does all sorts of templates, infographics and poster designs to populate the NBA's social media profiles. I recommend you follow him on RUclips, IG and Twitter. He's very talented and has been working with the NBA around a decade or so. He's talked about working with the NBA before and how sometimes his favorite versions of a poster (and usually the ones everyone would enjoy the most) aren't the ones approved by the NBA. Everything is very strict from color pallets to fonts. There's little to no free creativity in this business when working for that big of a corp. He has had to deliver a plethora of templates in like a 30 min turnaround time.
Here's an older Behance post form Ethan where he showcases what type of stuff the NBA briefs you on and wants you to use: www.behance.net/gallery/66675987/NBA-Finals-2018-Social-Media-Design
With this said, I don't want you to take this the wrong way or even as criticism. I'm just trying to provide a little insight that things ain't always as easy as they seem. You're clearly very talented and have an understanding of editing, composition and lighting. You clearly know what you're doing. But I often see every year young designers criticize what designers from big companies are doing and showing they can do "better" while not having the understanding of what it's like to work for these big companies and how castrated you are creatively. There's always those yearly Twitter posts regarding the NBA 2K cover arts "Million dollar company pro designer vs 16 yeard old designer"... The suits are calling the shots, you're doing what they want. I could definitely see your style being used by Bleacher Report though, not sure if you ever done something for them but definitely put yourself out there and let it be known you could do stuff for them.
Great video, great skills. Keep up!
