Their mistake was summed in the first two minutes of this video when the couple said they'd thought of this house as something out of a fairly tale. Problem is, FAIRLY TALES AREN'T REAL. Now they're getting a reality check. Mature adult live within their means and make educated choices in life.
I think they should make a small investment in the pool table and change the green felt to red. The green is such an eyesore in that beautiful room. It just stands out and distracts from everything. I would also get rid of the ping pong table. I would replace it with something wood that goes with the home, or just leave it as an empty space/ballroom.
They are divorced now. I do think it would have been a good place or artists since Caroline was not a willing hostess and painters would put up with a lot even when they are paying customers. It was ghastly to see that they promised supper and then didn't provide.
Adrian made really important points. I felt sorry for him because I don’t think the others understand the pressure he’s under. Both kind of wore themselves thin, while hoping the other will cover them. I wish though he could realize that taking the risk in putting everything into the house can take off better maybe than his other business. (I can’t really say because I don’t know what he does) I say this because the house is GORGEOUS, and as a foreigner I have to say, I’d hop on a plane to stay there in an instant! I do say though, they’ve got to invest in interior designer who would be committed to the arts and crafts design. I’ve stayed in other historic Scottish houses and the chinsy mitchmatch decor ruined the feel. ….Not a complaint!- I’m not stuffy…but it’s disappointing because not everyone (read MOST people) has that rich wood carved accents and beautiful classic architecture in their homes. People want to experience that in a full way. It’s part of what they’re paying for to stay there. As an artist, I’d adore having a week visit to set up and paint some landscapes of the area. Just throwing this idea out to them- have plein air painting groups come and stay! When it comes to adding classic features, fixing antique features that have broken or need repair, when in doubt, ….Hire ARTISTS!!!…. We’re waiting to help people in situations like this!!! It’s what we really love to do. This goes for anyone.
The thing is Adrian was putting the bulk of his efforts in the wrong place - the farming needed to be the sideline, not the main business. Also they had wasted a lot of effort on the main house when they should have been getting a couple of the smaller buildings up and running as holiday lets to bring in money to invest in the big house.
I've watched for less than 3 minutes and have already said "oy" a dozen times. How can a builder not have done an inspection of the house to find out all the hidden things that needed doing? Just heating a place that size would break the bank of most families, never mind maintenance. I loved the place at first sight, but am not insane.
Adrian is quite a frustrating person. So pessimistic, even when others are clearly trying to hype him up and focus on all the possibilities. (I got especially triggered when they were standing in the countryside and Caroline was trying to get him to imagine entertaining guests out there, but he was such a sourpuss!) Also, he gets clearly defensive when his own shortcomings are pointed out, and then hyper-focuses on everyone else's faults instead of looking inward. In reality, HE seems like he is there against his will - despite claiming he doesn't want to sell.
There are always two sides to every story. He seems like he's probably put up with a lot from the step son and his wife seems lazy complaining about cleaning to a guest then expecting them to fin for themselves at dinner. She didn't inspire warmth or hospitality. He worked all night had a few hours sleep still got up and was entertaining and accommodating to the guest. It seemed his faults where pointed out however no fingers were pointed any where else. Let's face it the rest of them would be out on their arses if not for him.
He seems to want out of his situation, even though he’s the one who wanted it, bought it and didn’t even think about how his family members felt. He wants a divorce and I think it’s way too late to change his mind, at this point. He talks about what a “bloody pickle he’s in.” It is all about him and it’s the best thing for Caroline to get away from him and be happy.
I had Ruth Watson’s show on in the background one day and heard “Black Clauchrie” a name I’d not recalled for decades. Right away I discovered it was indeed the same home I’d visited as a teenager in 1977 & where my brother & I PLAYED BADMINTON IN THE BALLROOM..LOL My Uncle’s mother in law, Granny Edwards at called it home. She lived there with her housekeeper and her funny little dog who seemed to be addicted to “chochies” as she called them. I believe he was a pug of some sort, and likely diabetic in hindsight!. We had Kidney suppers and wonderful afternoon teas. Lunches were saved for trips to pubs. The main road was miles away so it was quite isolated. Flies were certainly much bigger in Scotland and hamburgers were missing the bun? LOL The glass room was lovely though I recall a few panes were missing. I believe Granny E’s son and family lived nearby doing the caretaking. It was a wonderful adventure for my brother & I coming from Canada on a summer family trip to see relatives throughout the UK, as Dad grew up in England. We were 12 & 14. I recall one evening when Dad & Mum ventured into the dark wine cellar & found what they originally thought was a terrible bottle of Sherry but after much discussion, it turned out to be an excellent bottle of Port. Copper pipes clanged and were scary in the night and Granny E thought she’d seen a ghost one day only it turned out to be my Dad exploring a remote part of the house. Within the walled garden, it was run down a bit but after having read the Secret Garden as kidsplayed badminton in the ballroom , our imagination still made it magical. We are hoping to visit again next year if it’s still open to the public.
Yes, as I've gotten older, I am more and more particular about where I stay. My homes have become nicer, and my expectations in lodging are higher. I want to stay somewhere at least as nice as where I live. Why would anyone want to pay money to downgrade? The exception to this would be staying somewhere with a completely different style. I live in a large Farm House built in 1900, so I would be ok with a smaller space with a modern design and features. I would also be OK with a small cottage if it was decorated perfectly and felt cute, warm, and cozy. I would not be ok with something awkward or something totally out of date.
It’s not fair to blame Adrian for being gone. Someone needs to make an income for them to live on. Clearly, they didn’t think this through. A huge, old house that needs lots of work and decorating and they don’t have the resources. Bad decision to buy the house.
That’s why the blame belongs with Adrian. He found the house, wanted to buy the house, and bought the house without really consulting his family. Now, he’s in trouble and can’t keep up with it. He blames everybody but himself and the blame belongs squarely on him. I feel really sorry for his wife and kids.
I am amazed how much work needed done on the place and it's actually younger than my home. Mine was built in 1883 and fortunately it has weathered the years very well. Of course, there's far more humidity in Scotland. I do see many similarities in finishing details in the home comparable to mine. The conservatory in my home is my favorite part. The same for their home.
Knew it was a disaster when the wife was shown polishing the arts and crafts copper fireplace surround. Never ever polish arts and crafts metal, especially copper. The darkened patina is purposefully created by the artisan for the look and original is highly prized. PS: Never strip A&C oak furniture for the same reason.
If only they could hire someone to help them out. Running errands helping with the tours are making some kind of arrangement with the park so they can have a designated person to take their guests on the tour an arrangement where they would get kick back.
My son and I watch the show together he is the general contractor and we started a business together now we have started a non-profit to help people get community service hours while working and learning construction. Maybe you should find some workers that you can give community service hours to. And after they accrue the community service hours you can hire them on permanently because you have trained them to do some of the work at the lodge.

They didn't want to be innkeepers, well, then hoe else did they expect to make a go of it at this place if they didn't have another income generating source coming in? They simply weren't prepared for it and it was very painful to see this unfold. It was painful to have guests come up there and have NO DINNER PREPARATIONS made for them in house. INEXCUSEABLE. BUT they did say they were not innkeepers. They had no business buying that place and having the stepson bail on them, then having the husband be blamed for everything as he tries to head off the financial sinking ship. The show pitted the wife against the husband but they both were clueless. The person offering suggestions kind of baited the situation. I wonder if she picked it up on the cheap after they left the show?
Wow, glad I watched it to the very end and was able to see that they made it work! Good for them! It's an Absolutely Beautiful Place! Would of hated to see them break up and lose the place. Lovely ending.❤️

Usually people are too impatient about fixing homes. It's better to take on something like this if you have two or three sons and all learn construction techniques. Renting out the cottage and two or three bedrooms to local people could allow funds to restore it over time. Raising produce in the conservatory to sell in the farmer's market would help, as well as help the family food budget. This family was poorly prepared for the move. Perhaps buying it with a partner or relatives would share the expenses. This is a situation where a large family is a plus because a restoration is so costly. They need cousins or friends with children, particularly sons to learn construction, homesteading and restoration. If they could open a construction/restoration/homesteading school, they could restore it, get loans to fix the cottages as dorms and hire someone to run the school and help other family members get construction/restoration qualifications so they can run the school. The English like to work as a nuclear families. They need to learn from the rural Germans in the U.S. It was teamwork, extended family working together that allowed German towns to be oases of civilization in the midst of lawless frontier Texas towns of English, Scots and Mexican ancestry. Perhaps a partner who would own half the construction school (and profits) would work. It's a real mistake to go into a project like this without a well-off parent or other partner unless you have huge amounts of capital. Homeschooling the son would allow more time for him to work, while giving him time to study. This couple should try to sell one set of parents on investing as soon as possible and a handyman and family who will work part-time on the place for rent and then work with farmers the rest of the time. Once there are enough bathrooms and a place for students in one of the outbuildings. I think having a construction school would be more fun than the hospitality business and unlike the hospitality business, the school would restore the house.

Problem is stepson isn't reliable even though old enough, mom will side with her son and blame husband. She's already pushed him once to the detriment of his health, now it's a second act with wife not pulling her own weight in remodel/decorate/marketing of the home.
I've destroyed marriages in much worse houses. I'd consider getting married again if I could destroy it in that solarium.
