If the amp has a RCA line output, Via Tape Output if your amp has one of those or even using a Y splitter from the source so one signal from the splitter goes to the amps input and the other to the VU meter 3.5 mm jack input
Ground would be the shielding part of the input signal, ie the outer connection of the 3.5mm jack input or soldier a wire from the boards negative rail
