I love this song... this album...this man. He was a preeminent vocalist, poet and story teller. Then when he teamed with Brian, they were magnificent!!! I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet him and to see him perform when he was at the top of his game!
Yes, there must be. I suppose we never imagined, the struggle would only get harder - or more complex. We never imagined we would become as invested in our own oppression as the oppressors. We didn't plan on looking in the mirror, and seeing the enemy. We didn't know that our success came laced with the seeds of our demise. We missed the ways in which we were fragile and vulnerable and tender; and left open the back door as we stood sentry at the front. We yield the fruit of our own human imperfections, and as yet have much to learn, if not the time and space to grasp it. There must be something...and may we find it "soon and very soon." THANKS for sharing! :)
I agree the Devil is more determined and urgently working against us but people have more information and communication resources at our disposal and that can tip the balance in our favor. Just got to keep spreading the message.
1974. I was 17, 18 looking for a musical hero. I missed Hendrix by inches. Then I caught wind of Gil Scott-heron. He was playing some sets at a small jazz club in downtown Houston, him and Brian Jackson et al. I hurried & got some tickets, me & a buddy went. I just knew the show would be SRO. Not so. The breaker bros opened up. Then Gil took over. He wowed the audience with this super cerebral rap he always does at the beginning. He sang this song. Brian Jackson had a voice smooth as honey. He probably still does. More later..
After hearing ,gsh for the first time !! I knew and felt, I had just been woken up!! To see, think with a new open mindedness!! That grows, and still keeps open!! Today! ...WOW!!
Takes me back to the day when there was a message in every other song I heard on black radio and even early low-frequency FM stations. (not junk like today)
here's the first song I ever heard from Gil, 73 or so in the summer, 13 yeas old in Echo Park, music was right back then, many thanks to Gil, I miss that stuff
Shoutout to saxophonist Bilal Sunni Ali. That tenor man was just perfect for Gil’s band back then. Took you to another level spiritually. Great player!
Always loved the front and back cover of the album...the gorilla just sitting in the chair 11:45 pm then on the back cover the guerilla is in the streets after 12 midnight "First Minutes of a New Day" RIP GIL we miss you but you will always be here because of your music left to enlighten anyone who will listen all over the world.
I'm fascinated by the vocal arrangements in particular of this great song. I figured Gil is holding the low(tenor) part of the harmony. Is Victor or Brian singing the high part?
Must be somethin' Must be somethin' we can do Must be somethin' Must be somethin' we can do We didn't come all this way just to give up We didn't struggle all this time to say we've had enough Had enough Must be somethin' Must be somethin' we can do Must be somethin' Must be somethin' we can do We didn't come all this way in the dead of night To give up now that we can see the light See the light Just like music Just like music that we make Fills the spirit And helps us see a clearer day I'll tell you somethin' I'll tell you somethin' you can do Keep on movin' Keep on movin' for what's true I'll tell you somethin' I'll tell you somethin' you can do Keep on movin' Keep on movin' for what's true

I was 18 yrs old, just starting to truly understand the struggle in the US and worldwide. Now at 60 yrs old still the same soup warmed over!

I heard that....
Could anyone write lyrics ?
Must be somethin'
Must be somethin' we can do
Must be somethin'
Must be somethin' we can do
We didn't come all this way just to give up
We didn't struggle all this time to say we've had enough
Had enough
Must be somethin'
Must be somethin' we can do
Must be somethin'
Must be somethin' we can do
We didn't come all this way in the dead of night
To give up now that we can see the light
See the light
Just like music
Just like music that we make
Fills the spirit
And helps us see a clearer day
I'll tell you somethin'
I'll tell you somethin' you can do
Keep on movin'
Keep on movin' for what's true
I'll tell you somethin'
I'll tell you somethin' you can do
Keep on movin'
Keep on movin' for what's true
