It's called not taking ourselves too seriously!
Great reaction to this vid mate, at the end when you mention about him playing a character is why he's so brilliant, He's portraying the average blokes that we all grew up listening to or overhearing in the pub across England over the past 20+years. & the humour is really not from a place/sense of arrogance or superiority complex, but from just growing up in an environment where being social and having a laugh together at the pub or at each others houses was the highlight to the end a hard weeks work. Being able to wind eachother up & take the piss out of eachother to a point was what we grew up with. Just having a laugh about whatever you can find something to make a joke or take the piss out of, that's real British sense of humour, being able to laugh at anything, everyone and yourself most importantly.
I love the review. I'm British, can laugh about ourselves but it is a rare moment for our humor to be appreciated across the pond. Al Murray is a Brit that hits the spot.
Many British comedians like to gently poke fun at everyone, as well as ourselves. The humour is not intended to be vicious. Try looking for a song by Flanders and Swann, two musical comedy song performers from the 1950s and 60s. They sang "A song of patriotic prejudice", pointing out stereotypes from everywhere close to us. Also check out his take on bacon. That monologue is hilarious. You can find it on You Tube. "Bacon....proof that God exists."
You totally get this humour (we love to take the rise out of ourselves taking the rise out of others), so if ever you want to become an honorary Brit, please apply. We need beards like yours over here. Stay safe, cuz.

I never used to really get Al Murray until I was older. Then it all clicked when I saw him in Hells Kitchen with Gordon Ramsey and I realised how good he was (had a really fit girlfriend/wife)!
The great thing about Al Murray, he can bring a pub atmosphere to a crowd without being in a pub, if he was a real pub landlord (and we were allowed in pubs, for you folks in 2042 it's still lockdown here in 2021, ask your history teacher) I'd be at the bar every night, the public speaking landlord of the local public house, my local used to have a landlord with a similar sense of humour but without the boldness and delivery, one of the best British comedians without doubt, not too insultive, clever punch lines that can be quickly worked out where they came from and he's teaching you at the same time!! Worth more than the admission fee you pay to see him for sure!!
Andy Parsons doesn't get the recognition he deserves. His solo stand ups are brilliant. His way of pointing out the bullshit within society isn't trying to be edgy or controversial, he jus comes at it like a classic comedian and that jus happens to be his angle.

Glad you enjoyed it. Our sense of humour could so easily be mis-understood by some Americans, but you got it. You should find an American comic who does the reverse and takes the piss out of us in an equally clever way. Most of us would not be offended and would most likely agree with it.
We love to laugh at ourselves! Al Murray is a genius character.
Its so important to laugh at ourselves and each other. But most of all to appreciate each others culture and never forget underneath we are the same.
'Wait! Does that mean we're asleep over here?'. Classic!
Take a look at UK panel shows like 8 out of 10 cats countdown, would I lie to you, celebrity juice, have I got news for you and many other panel games. These shows truly are a window into the UK sense of humour.
Celebrity Juice is utter crap, and apart from mentally undressing Rachel Riley there not much in 8 out of 10 Cats! Would i lie to you is ridiculously simple , but thex3 regulars are all very good HIGNFY is well past its sell by date !!
@@johnsaunders2109 OK Mr negative, then what would you suggest as a good show to give somebody not from the UK an insight into British humour. Although I have to say, I agree with you about celeb juice and hignfy, however they are very British. Suggesting stand up is all well and good and they're are so many brilliant British stand ups. However, panel shows do seem to be a very British thing. So I'm open to suggestions.
@@monkeytrumpet11 Peep Show. The Office. Alan Partridge. These are by far.the best modern examples. As for older series. Hancocks Half Hour and Steptoe and Son have not dated. The Likely Lads. Al Murray is one of our best stand up comedians. He is a graduate in History, intelligent, articulate and makes us laugh at ourselves, which is always a good thing.
He did a series called why everybody hates the English it was brilliant
Must have been a long show !

Definitely
All the mortimerian tales are amazing. Definitely worth watching.

Legendary...Bob Mortimer would get a seat at my last supper.
Omg the theft and shrubbery story kills me everytime
You earned a sub my friend, love the humility and the reactions, keep it up
AL Murray is a history buff in real life, so he's got plenty of material to play with.
Hey dude, I love your reactions. We're pretty proud of our comedians here, as you can see it's a different kind of comedy you guys are used to on your side of the water. Keep it up.
When you go and see him live, the first half an hour is all improvised with the audience and it’s incredible how quick he is. He seems to have a response to everything, and he’ll often refer back to stuff later in the show. He even remembers everyones name.
Amongst a veritable sea of reaction video's, it is very welcome indeed to watch one where an American hears the humour, how cleverly constructed and how the audience are masterfully manipulately yet doesn't get all butt-hurt because it's his country being slated. Instead his genuine appreciation comes over.
Nice one, thank you. Subbed based purely on your self-deprecation and honesty. 👍
"The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does, and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does..."
And sadly an awful lot of the second type in the ' Red Wall' !!!!!
@@johnsaunders2109 so which one are you? Bigoted toff or self hating back stabbing worker?
Dude. This is my first video of yours I've watched, but you are already quite possibly my favourite American. Considered, polite, good sense of humour, and humble whilst keeping your patriotic American side. A breath of fresh air! Respect brother.
You should see him out of character.. he's so eloquent & clever. I think his act is to make fun of us more than anyone else. Thanks for the content man!
Congratulations sir,it's very refreshing to listen to an American who actually gets British humour and gets a good belly laugh from it and also talks a lot of sense. I was pleased you got the four candles sketch and if you haven't already seen it l suggest that you watch the Morecambe and Wise sketch with Andre Previn. They had weekly shows where they would do a sketch with a famous person who was not afraid to make a fool of themselves.
If you have seen a lot of Al you know he’s playing a typical English pub landlord, don’t be offended just be glad that you’re not a German,,,,
I like that you say if you're offended by anything, then that's you and not him.
The best humour is always 'intellectual'
The pub landlord is a caricature, brilliant
Yes. And the best comedians are usually highly intelligent.
He's actually taking the piss out of the British. He is saying We the British had The same attitude. But now you occupy that mantle
Intelligent comedian and very funny...you should checkout more of his stuff. Great choice of clips.
Al Murray is amazing, all his humour is double edged. To some it sounds like hes bigging Britain up but in reality hes actually taking the piss as well.
George Carlin said something just like it. "The American dream, you have to be asleep to believe it"
Man you are a f@cking legend for understanding our sense of humour and taking no offence.much respect from the UK keep up the good work that laugh is infectious
He is a classic English comedian. Try Milton Jones , Hughe Dennis and Andy parsons .
Also try mock the week TV show .
Great otherwise.
Andy Parsons doesn't get the recognition he deserves. His solo stand ups are brilliant. His way of pointing out the bullshit within society isn't trying to be edgy or controversial, he jus comes at it like a classic comedian and that jus happens to be his angle.
Don't try Mock the Week! Its so predictable!!!
You're reactions are most entertaining on RUclips, you're so under rated. Shout out from England and happy new year!!!
Thank you and Happy New Years to you as well
@@TheEclecticBeard thank you:)
When Al said pissed he ment drunk, its a word we use in UK. 😉
It devolves from our Scandinavian ancestors drinking reindeer piss it was traded by Viking Ships all over Northern Europe. They used it for going berserk. You could drink it and then recycle it yourself and then drink it again five or six times ..Reindeers eat magic mushrooms in large quantities . These days small quantities are considered to be good for fighting depression and enhancing your mental health .....

He IS playing a character. He’s nothing like this in real life.
Al Murrays knowledge and understanding of history and geography is actually very impressive. If you haven't seen it already, I'd recommend watching a clip called 'Name a Country... We've Defeated Them', where he asks the audience to yell out names of countries, and using his knowledge of history, explains how the English 'beat' them. Sometimes it's in a very round-about way, but that's where his knowledge really shines through!
Great content, made me laugh 1st thing in the morning, love from England. God bless America ;)

I went to see him in concert in the UK years ago and he actually does this to the French and the Germans too, so funny

When doing the first series, the writers and actors all admit they got things wrong.
