  • Happy 50th anime analysis, guys! And man, what a journey it's been to get here. In the last month, I've gone to Japan, turned 20, had a birthday party, got sick, lost my voice, gotten it back, and now I find myself in Hawaii uploading this video. It's been pretty hectic.
    Well, hope you enjoy.
    Next review will be on a romance anime.

    The Visual Novel for Chaos;Head that the anime is based off is amazing. The anime is an absolute trainwreck. They skipped so much, changed things, swapped the order and ruined Takumi's character to try and make him more likeable, yeah they failed but you see, he isn't supposed to be likeable anyway, that's the point! He hates himself, he truly does, so it would be kind of stupid for the reader or viewer to be like "hell yeah, Takumi is awesome!". The way Takumi is in the VN makes the ending SO much better, it's far more emotional and meaningful.
    There is a reason the VN creators made him that way and the anime adaption ignored it, like with many others great thigns about Chaos;Head. And despite Takumi's character, which I admit can be annoying even in the VN, it's the other characters, the story as well as the whole mind fuck thing that keeps you interested. The anime doesn't even do the mind fucking very well. Seriously man, the Visual Novel is such a mind fuck, you have no idea. And I don't know why they thought a psychological thriller needed to suddenly become more action based later on in the anime. What the fuck was with those stupid bugs? Seriously... Sure, most of the main characters have swords but that is not where the focus is supposed to be.
    But I do see what you're saying about the main protagonist not being likeable and how that pretty much sucks, I don't disagree with you there but for the story to work properly, he can't be too likeable. However, I could relate to his problems socializing, so that was a plus for me, although Takumi's social difficulties are much worse than mine. Oh and the whole existential crisis thing he goes threw... yeah, I think you can guess that it's done way better in the VN. There are so many feels in the VN that don't exist at all in the Anime...
    Remember the fight between Takumi and Seira? No? That's because they skipped it in the anime. You only see the very beginning, then it cuts to something else, then back to Takumi after the fight's over. That fight was a HUGE moment for the character. He had to defeat his main "wife", who, with the exception of Rimi, was the only "girl" he loved. She may not have been real, but to him, she was. They completely destroyed Takumi's character and his development.
    Norose, the main villain (that you actually see) is done soooo much better in the VN. He's actually an interesting one and another character they completely fucked up for the anime.
    I think if they had 25 episodes instead of 12, it might not have been so bad. I guess that's why the next 2 in the series are longer, they probably learned their lesson.
    One of the first things you say in this review is that "all 3 of these shows technically take place in the same universe but have next to nothing to do with each other story wise, so they're more or less entirely seperate"
    ... that is completely wrong.
    I honestly don't understand how so many people keep missing the connections. The Committee of 300 are the main antagonists of all 3 stories. They get talked about more often in Chaos;Head than the other two but Okabe mentioned them a few times in Steins;Gate, or at least he does in the Visual Novel. Noah II is destroyed at the end of Chaos;Head, then in Robotics;Notes, you see a briefcase with Noah IV written on it. There is a group in Robotics;Notes called Hidden Hand, another name for the Committee of 300.
    In one of the Steins;Gates worldlines SERN (who are controlled by the Committee of 300) was successful in controlling most of the worlds population, in the exact same way Nozomi, Norose and the Committee had planned on doing with Noah II in Chaos;Head. Suzuha talks about how there are no more wars but everyone walks around like a robot. Just like Norose had talked about: A forced peace, without freedom. I think it's safe to assume they used Noah IV for that purpose. So that is a major continuation. Takumi didn't stop them, he merely slowed them down a bit. Using time travel and Noah, the committee was taking over the world.
    That song, I think it's called Let Me Pass, it's the one Takumi hears over his phone before an earthquake, something very closely resembling that song is heard in Robotics;Notes. It gave me chills and I expected an earthquake, or something bad to happen. KInda disappointed me when nothing like that happened. But still, a nice reference.
    There was an earlier part in Robotics;Notes, I think it's one of the flags Kaito gets, talks about something that sounded to me a lot like Noah II, this was before the reveal of Noah IV.
    Nae, from Steins;Gate, appears in Robotics;Notes.
    There's more, some big things and minor things but that'll do. I've made my point.
    I can understand people missing some of these connections, and some times they can be pretty easy to miss, especially if you don't pause Robotics;Notes to read things. But honestly, I'm sick of people saying there is no real connection when there clearly is. They all have their own plot that can be enjoyed individually but there is also this overarching plot that makes the science-adventure series amazing. It's just a total waste if you don't get that. You're really missing out.
    And if you're going to review something and claim something about it as fact, then please, make sure it's an actual fact. And if you can't be bothered finding out, then just don't mention it at all.
    But you did sum up the Chaos;Head anime adaption pretty well, "a giant waste of time".
    But what I don't understand is that you know it's based off a Visual Novel but continue to bash the writers of the anime, as if they were the ones who came up with the plot "this feels like the creators wanted to have a romance in the show because 'hey, other anime have romances, don't they?'" Their relationship is developed a lot in the VN, they share a lot of time together and it makes sense. It's just the anime adaption that fucked it up, like they did with everything else.
    They didn't come up with any of the plot, they just took the plot of the VN, threw it out the window and waited for a few trains to run over it before picking it up, throwing it into a fire, watering it down and trying to piece together it's remains.

      Redstar2613 C'mon bruh with the Robotic;Note spoiler.
      By the way I wouldn't call the VN a masterpiece. The character route are so-so. At most it's nice extra information you didn't get in the main story.
      Ultimately even when you understand the entire plot through the VN and like Takumi's inner-conflict. It doesn't hold a candle to S;G. I don't recommend anyone curious about the Sci;ADV to start with this one unless you really relate with the main character.

    Some how, I think that I maybe know the reason why Chaos;Head got this way
    It must be because of the technical difficulties of turning a visual novel game with mutiple routes and mutiple ways for the plot to develop and turn out into a one-way plot that this anime has.

    Yeah the shut in otaku main character is really hard to do well. An example of this type of character being pulled off especially well is Sato from Welcome to the NHK (highly recommend). The show really makes you understand how his mental instability and laziness is stopping him from getting any better. But he is honestly the only compelling character that I can think of that falls under this archetype.

    • @GeneralPublic
      @GeneralPublic 6 лет назад

      I actually didn’t like Welcome to the NHK. Sato is such an annoying character and whenever it seems like he might improve his life he just makes a stupid decision and screws things up. He is such an idiot. Honestly I hate Welcome to the NHK because Sato and also his next door neighbor and also that really nosy young girl are all such annoying characters. And the parts of Welcome to the NHK where there is stuff about suicide, that is just it for me, when it gets beyond stupid and the characters are too far gone for me to accept anymore. In Chaos;Head things are different, in Chaos;Head Takumi Nishijo is so crazy and over-the-top that I immediately reject him right from the beginning and laugh at his troubles, what the Germans call Schadenfreude, something I can’t do with Sato in Welcome to the NHK because Sato is too sympathetic. But when I watch Chaos;Head I LOVE it because no show gives me more Schadenfreude than Chaos;Head. Well except maybe Neon Genesis Evangelion, I get Schadenfreude from it too, laughing at Shinji Ikari who is likewise unsympathetic. Welcome to the NHK, though, hits too close to home and is too realistic, with its lack of supernatural elements and how it sticks to realism and how its main character as well as some other characters have many of the same troubles that I either have or can sympathize with, very hard for me to laugh at those sorts of troubles, Welcome to the NHK just makes me sad, a very depressing show.

    I really loved this show a whole lot. Still, I think your review of it is very good, although you don’t QUITE seem to understand the implications of Chaos;Head being based on a visual novel. Actually Redstar2613’s comment explains things better than I could, but I really enjoyed this anime. And no, the somewhat sexual hallucinations are not due to the director of the anime being a perv, they are because most visual novels are aimed at pervs as the target audience and this is based on one. I think mostly the constraints of it being limited to 12 episodes are what made this not as good as it could have been, I think if they had expanded it to 25 episodes it could have been almost as good as Steins;Gate. And yeah, there are a ton of things connecting Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, and Robotics;Notes, like Redstar2613 pointed out, the Committee of 300 is behind everything. Chaos;Head has the Noah II, Robotics;Notes has the Noah IV. Takumi Nishijo, the main character of Chaos;Head, is mentioned in both the other two shows by his alias “Knight Heart”. And all of these anime shows are really just adaptations of the visual novels, with the visual novels being the official canon material. Which explains why in all 3 shows the main guys have something sorta like harems but not really. Actually these shows and visual novels are called the Science Adventure Series by 5pb and Nitroplus, and the SAME people wrote ALL the visual novels, that is right, the visual novel this is based on was written by the exact same people who wrote the visual novel Steins;Gate is based on. Really the problem here was in the process of adapting it into an anime, but to me the flaws in the show do not stand out that much and I can enjoy it anyway, my main gripe is it is only 12 episodes, Steins;Gate and Robotics;Notes both got more than twice as much, if Chaos;Head had been allowed twice as many episodes they could have done a much better job fitting the entire story in. Your video does make many good points though, like how idiotic the cops act (just letting a murder suspect who is crazily ranting to himself who they have video evidence of go), how stupid everyone in town is when there is a serial killer on the loose, etc. But I liked things like the crazy way that girl who is in that band and is into mythology talks. It is kind of refreshing how each character in the show has a totally different take on what is going on and none of them seem to match, and a lot of it is left unresolved what the correct explanation is, whether to go with science-sounding conspiracy theories or the mythology-sounding conspiracy theories. Also you have to understand, almost all the main characters are gigalomaniacs, which are basically paranoid schizophrenics with supernatural powers to change reality to match their delusions. And the series DOES explain the limits of the gigalomaniac ability a BIT, for instance, it does not work on humans, only objects, so you can’t use it to heal the sick, that is why The General is dying. Which is why Takumi Nishijo turning out to not be a real human but just a delusion who was turned into reality makes him able to transform himself into anything once he realizes this. As far as real-booting, that is making things appear from thin air, and yeah the Di Swords can also be used as weapons too, and there is a scientific basis for it in the Dirac Sea which actually exists, and the anime and visual novel have the Ir2 equation, a fictional equivalent to the real-life Dirac equation which is just as important and part of real quantum physics. For me there was just too much good stuff in this anime, so much of a great premise, so many great things from the visual novel, that I could not help but love it, yes the flaws you point out are obvious but so what, they do not bother me, I love it despite its flaws, I cannot help it, it is a guilty pleasure. By guilty what I mean is, honestly I actually enjoy it when Takumi Nishijo is suffering, I find it funny, he is rather hard to relate to. He is just a fictional character though, so me enjoying his fictional suffering does no real harm to any real people, in real life I am a nice person, but this really is a guilty pleasure of mine, his suffering is so amusing to me, I can’t help it. When he finally does get his act together near the end and realize what he is and awaken his true powers, though, I am rooting for him all the way, despite him being a severely mentally disturbed individual who any sensible society would lock away in an insane asylum, he still ends up being a hero in the end despite his flaws, kinda like how this show, at least for me, ends up being pretty awesome in the end despite its flaws.

    with how takumi saw rimi in the beginning, with her committing that murder, i think it wouldve been a LOT more compelling for HER to be the actual murderer instead of that random nurse cuz i feel like there could be a more compelling arch with how she ends up being the love interest of takumi
    but this, ofc, is the only adaptation of chaos head, and it really is a pretty big nothing burger, and was not a well handled plot, so even if that plotline was followed, it prob wouldnt be well portrayed in the anime

  • @PassingNeet
    @PassingNeet 10 лет назад

    i find it funny you bring up index, because the powers they have work pretty similarly to an espers. essentially, it works on the premise of "personal reality" and enforcing said reality on the real world. the only reason i can think up that this wouldn't be use-able to kill another "Power-user" ,as i'll call the chaos;head guys, just by using it is because that would cause 2 personal realities to clash. in this scenario, having prior knowledge of this, and knowing about experiments like Schrodinger's cat help considerably. however, that really can't save the rest of the anime. the plot and characters (or their interactions) are still very bad.

    i won't post the evidence oh why i liked their relationship cause it would spoil the show, but the major reason is that it's a parallel to the whole concept the anime plays on illusion and reality within the characters main relationship, which is the that of his fantasy anime girl and the real one along with other ideas and concepts. I guess what i liked about this anime wasn't so much the character themselves, but the way the story sets itself up with the characters that makes you think a lot.

    Although Ive heard shit about this show I have heard pretty good things about Robotic;Notes, I havent seen it yet but even though everyone says its no steins;Gate its still pretty good.
    Its a shame this show turned out to be so shit considering the premise was really good imo.
    An anime I hugely recommend is Welcome to the NHK, its a dark comedy about a shut in hikikamori guy trying to stop being a shut in, its reallly good and most of the comedy isnt goofy anime comedy. I would highly recommend it.

    Great review, but I will disagree with your statement about pink-haired girls making bad love interests. Okay, I really can't argue with Inori because while I do like her, I prefered Hare as a love interest and even that would have been pushing it. Two shows I'll bring up are Future Diary and Elfen Lied. Yuki and Yuno, and Kouta and Lucy are both in my top 10 favorite anime couples, the latter of which is my #2 behind Tomoya and Nagisa (big shocker there), but both Yuno and Lucy have pink hair.

  • @rachel9805

    Yuno's a good character, but she's also a total psychopath. Now that I think about it, a lot of pink haired girls are also psychopaths.

    • @GeneralPublic
      @GeneralPublic 6 лет назад

      Best pink-haired girl is the one in Elfen Lied, that show is totally nuts with all the violence and nudity, and the main pink-haired girl in it, Lucy, has a split personality and goes back and forth between being lovable and cute, and being a vicious inhuman killing machine. So epic, I love Elfen Lied. And she does make a great love interest, what with her constant nudity and her ability to do both offense and defense to protect a lover (assuming she does not kill her lover, which IS a real danger with a yandere like her).

  • @TheGoldenTuga
    @TheGoldenTuga 10 лет назад

    My counter to the pink hair thing besides the obvious one (Yuno) is Kurimo from Seitokai no Ichizon, which by the way I recomend if you are ever in the mood for a good comedy with actually good romance not just misunderstandings portayed as romance and in my opinion one of the best male leads I have ever seen at least for this kind of show.

      The Only Pink-Haired Girls in Anime that I know of are:
      Yuna Miyama(Maburaho)
      Miharu Sena Kanaka(Girls Bravo!)
      Louise(Familiar of Zero)
      Lacus Clyne(Gundam SEED/Gundam SEED Destiny)
      Rimi(Chaos;HEAd)
      Yuno(Future Diary)
      Sakura Haruno(Naruto/Naruto Shippuden)
      Lala Satalin Deviluke(To Love Ru)
      Nana and Momo(To Love Ru)
      Moka Akashiya(Rosario+Vampire)
      Yui(Angel Beats)
      Arche Klein(Tales of Phantasia)
      Rika Shinozaki(Sword Art Online)
      Lunar(My Bride is a Mermaid)
      and IMO, some of them aren't Shitty Love interests.

    I don't think it's as bad as you picture it. Of course you can't compare it to steins gate, but it's still so much better than 50 % of the new anime coming out. If tomorrow a show like this came out ut would probably be a 7/10.
    I'm not saying it's good, it's definitely bad, but not thaaaaaaat bad, and also the art is really good and there are a lot of cool scenes.

    i agree all of points but disagree with two: SPOILER ALERT "those eyes who's are those" was mentioned in public in FES song when she saw the main character *(BIG FAT SPOILER - there was group of people wanting to frame that girl and used her last words on scene (maybe she singed further idk) to get her under suspision for cops)*. she whispered these meaningful words to him and only then next episode or past next was this phrase shown in murder scene. other point. i agree that he is boring but (SPOILER) in the end you found out that he is newborn (delusive) soul learning life with other implemented thoughts to his heads and have no base on learning emotions before (maybe thats why he was loner from beggining which would explain the plot why he was rejecting everyone like a kid) .

      ***** I feel kind of bored by the 2nd season. The gun world wasn't very colorful, and the girl Sinon, is somewhat interesting, but I kind of feel she's your everyday tsundere character, also Asuna and Kirito's romance doesn't get any focus. That was what made the first half so great. Though the gun thing may be a nitpick on my part. I tried to like it, but I feel the new season lost some of the charm that made the first half a masterpiece. But at least we don't have to put up with you-know-who from the 2nd half

    • @kabi-sama9367
      @kabi-sama9367 10 лет назад

      ***** And that bitching starts now. I'll admit this, I'm only watching GGO mostly for the sake of criticizing it so I can have have a solid opinion about it to confront the fanboys of it as underhanded as it sounds. however, I do have legit problems I can nitpick out of unlike the haters that hate it because it's just cool to do so. GGO has some slow pacing, but I'll admit it's two steps better then it's rushed 1st season. The game itself just seems off in terms of mechanics and pricing. That part about how Shinon doesn't show any reaction to guns in GGO was flawed in a psychological standpoint unless it's some kind of foreshadow. It's still just as painfully as over dramatic as the first season and above all Kiriito is still OP as fuck.

    Now i will say I love this anime. But I will say that most of your points if not all are legitimate. I loved the build up way more than the actual ending. To be more specific, I was referring specifically to Sugou from the second half. I thought Kayaba was a great villain.
      And I don't know if you watched one of the online reviews that bashed Kayaba for that, but if you watch the actual scene where he explained his actions, his reasons were much deeper.

    • @Srlqulongtard
      @Srlqulongtard 10 лет назад

      I watched the show while it came out in japan so i'm not entirely fresh on what he said but I do remember him saying that he couldn't remember why he locked everyone in sao. Sugou was a creepy asshole that licked girls in comas who were half or a third his age.

      I get notifications via youtube whenever I get a comment on my videos. And you're welcome, I'm glad you're a fan. :)
      Regardless, this comes off clearer in the dub version, but Kayaba's deal wasn't that he forgot why he was a bad guy. It was that he had spent his entire life obsessing over his dream of bringing his childhood fantasy world to life to the point where it consumed him, and he forgot why he grew to love that world in the first place.
