    Thanks for watching! Do you have any other questions? Ask below.
    FYI - One of the other popular questions I got asked but didn't mention here was about Sponsorships. I don't take sponsorships because I am still growing my channel and don't know where it's going yet. I don't want to be tied down to a schedule or someone else's business goals. So this is a very personal decision. I have no problem with sponsorships, and artists who do them are making a living in their own way - more power to them! I just work really hard to not HAVE to take sponsorships and do my own thing.
    To give you an idea, I've been approached by Squarespace and Skillshare, both offered $100-200 per video. I have no idea how that compares to others, but that might help you decide if you are in that situation.
    OK. Bye for now. Have fun!

    I would love to work in a collective studio. I remember visiting somewhere (possibly Longleat Wildlife Park and House) where they had a converted a long brick-built horse stables/ loose boxes. Each box was open fronted and had an individual artist, ceramicist, photographer etc. Visitors could walk along the main passage in front of each box looking at artists working, go into the boxes, chat to the artists and buy things, and the artists could talk to each other too. It looked like an absolute dream. I imagine it had such a buzz because it was part of Longleat, which was the main tourist attraction. Whether it world work as well as a stand alone enterprise who knows.

    Sarah I’m one of those taking all your skillshare classes and don’t doing or publishing any of the homework. I didn’t even followed you on RUclips and Instagram. But I love your classes, you are a wonderful teacher. I learned a lot about drawing with you (and I had 4 semestres of drawing on university). You are an inspiration. Now I ´m following you everywhere 😊Thank you so much

    It's so exciting to hear about your goal of hosting workshops and plein air painting trips at your studio!! Whether it's five or ten years from now, I'd love to fly out to join! Plus I'll actually be a proper adult out of college who can hopefully afford it then

I know there are many that would love to spend a few days in Scotland painting with you outside and then spend time on their own touring. I've done this many times over the years. Sign me up! I've loved learning from you over the years. Keep up the great work, you're making a difference for us.

    Great video. Thank you for this. A piece of advice I would give to people starting a new business... learn to live lean. Before I started my business I looked at how I was living and looked for ways to cut down my monthly expenses... like get a room mate or make a budget for groceries and stick to it. This helped me a lot.

    There were many good tips and thoughts that I loved, especially how you approach goals by making a "backwards" plan. That was very interesting and useful, I will do that myself from now on! Also, I have always had a tiny tiny dream of doing art as a part time job along with my psychology degree (I have year left in my studies!). It's so useful to hear very practical tips about how you manage your art business, how you have got where you are now and what are your future plans.
    I'm so glad to hear you are doing better now :) My mother always says we need to go the bottom to be able to learn something and grow as humans, and even if that's hard, I guess that's life. I have always liked that you share about your everyday life, with all its positivity but also the challenges and struggles you meet. It connects us as humans to know we are not alone in our struggles, and it makes your videos more humane and intime and warm. Also I think normalizing mental health is really important, especially in our modern, hectic society.
    I just joined your Patreon for the first time ever and really love it!!!! I'm already waiting for the upcoming paint along! ♡ See you there!

    Lots of great information here, Sarah, and thank you for sharing. I've always wanted to know more about the artists that inspire you or that you follow. I would eventually like to paint... maybe not for a living, but at least to host classes, but I would worry that I would start to loathe my passion. Art is after all one of the few ways that I cope with life, and I get incredible flow whenever I'm painting. It's actually one of my goals for 2022 to start a YT channel centered on my art but my art isn't consistently... good and also I still have SO MUCH to learn- and I'm not sure I'll ever understand perspective, hahah! xD Anyways, I hope you're taking care and wishing a happier and healthier 2022 for you!

    Once again you made a video that is so useful. I was wondering what has been your best source for creating a following? Is it RUclips some other platform ? Maybe it’s lots of other sources. Another question is , besides Skillshare what other passive income sources have you tried?

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  3 года назад

      At the beginning (2015) I was streaming full time on Twitch, within a year I had 10,000 followers and was making minimum wage. I was also growing my instagram but that grew way slower..maybe like 500-1000.
      I continued to stream full time for a couple more years but dipped my toes into youtube and realized I could reach more people, and I enjoyed the process of making thoughtful videos more than doing a live stream. So i started to transition to youtube in late 2019-2020. By then I had around 3,000 subs on youtube. In 2020 I started posting weekly on youtube, and gained another 5,000 by the end of the year, in 2021 I posted weekly again, and now you can see the numbers for today. By far youtube has been the most successful but also the most FUN source of connecting to my audience.
      It took over 5 years for my to hit 10k on instagram, and that's pretty much the only other place I post my work. It has changed a lot (not for the better) and I don't really enjoy it anymore.
      For passive income I also have Patreon..it's more of a combo between active/passive but many people join it and get to watch all my past content (it's a good perk) and that's passive. Otherwise I've offer my tutorials on Gumroad and tried a couple other places but it results in minimal income. Stock photography is another place I've played but not enough to make any money..it requires a lot of time and research.

    Aww thank you so much for this video this was really helpful. I’m just at the very beginning of making art. I have had several different jobs not related to art at all and I’ve found art again and wanted to make a go of it. I’m still learning what media works best for me. All of my work is pastel pencil but I get so frustrated with my scanner and printer because it just comes out so grainy. I’m interested to hear you do your own prints too. The printing of the artwork is probably the most irritating thing. I have a Epson p700 and I’m trying so many papers. I started with Somerset enhanced then went to Epson archival matte then to the fine art stuff but honestly the fine art stuff looks nice but you loose so much detail. It seems that every piece of art has its only colour settings that I need to change. Are you like this too with your printing? Would love to see a video of you making up our prints and your process. Even just to share the frustration of it all 😂❤️your paintings are beautiful by the way. Xxxxxxx

    Thank you for doing this. I took the leap and left my job in Sept. 2021, and especially appreciate your advice to have multiple income streams. Do you have a physical gallery where your work is for sale, and if so, how did you select/get into it? If not, what is your alternative?

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  3 года назад +2

      Yes, I work with two galleries here in Scotland - but one of them is seasonal (they aren't open during winter). I simply asked if they are interested, send them PDF with some images of my work, and when they agreed, went from there. I have a contract with them. But I don't sell as much in galleries because I pursue my online income much more (it feels more stable)

    Hopefully you see this so I can get an answer as my online researching is getting me no where and google doesn’t know what I’m talking about lmfao anyways
    When you’re out during your plein air painting stuff, I noticed at least in this video, where you’re standing up and painting. At that point I noticed you had a surface you were painting on, but it looked like you had something on the front, like a portable easel almost, that wasn’t being held up by legs but rather your own body. Like those people at baseball games and they walk around with that thing hanging off their neck asking people if they want popcorn. And I’m curious what the heck that is and where one could get one!

    Good stuff. Really interesting to hear your thoughts and about your journey so far. I've only recently found your channel, but I'm hooked! Having come back to art later in life I am at the start of my journey, and what began as relearning everything has morphed into a small business. Not enough to financially sustain me, but still, its unexpected.
    My question is about teaching/tutorials.... is there a right time to call yourself qualified to teach? I'm asking because I feel my skills are there and I have a lot of knowledge, but I have that nagging feeling that I can't possibly know more than the next person.,,, Is it best to just try it, or is there a step or two before jumping in?

      I started "teaching" when I was a year into it, but mainly just as casual demos on stream. Very little pressure and low key. Free. I'd say start with something like that and get a feel for it. You also learn a ton by teaching!
