For a price comparison, Rent the Runway, which is a similar online retailer in the US, for £60 a month, you get 4 items. There is also Nuuly here, where you can rent more "everyday clothes" from Free people, UO, etc. with 6 items for the same price. Both of which, I think are better deals.
I definitely agree that this would work better for special occasions. I find that clothes I wear daily I get attached too, so to let them go after a month wouldn't be very enjoyable for me. Maybe per season you get a new lot or something might work? It's definitely interesting and a concept that will hopefully grow and change!
I love hearing your honest thoughts at the end. Seems like a service you could use for the events around your wedding if you want special things to wear for rehearsal dinner, bachelorette, etc.
Aren't there any non-designer clothing rental places in London? Here in the Netherlands there are a few. I have personally been to one, the Outfit Library in Arnhem. You can rent unlimited clothing there, provided that you only take three items at a time, for 25 euros a month :)
What a beautiful idea! I would looooove to open such a shop in my town :) Good to know that there is already a good example to model after! Thank you for sharing, it helped me a lot
@@Molscheira That's great to hear :) Good luck, I hope your idea works out! I have talked with the owner of the Outfit Library and she is very nice, I'm sure you could also contact her if you have any questions about her business.
Just saw this so late lmao but my experience with renting clothes is with Nuuly (idk if it’s available outside the US yet). But you choose your own items, 6 per month for $88. Pre-quarantine I was really enjoying it, as you said it ~itches the shopping scratch, ~ and it allowed me to try things outside my comfort zone that I enjoyed wearing throughout a month, but would probably never want to purchase
99 pounds for 3 clothing items that you only get to keep for a month????? WOW I don't spend that much money on clothes I keep forever. This was still very interesting and fun, I'm just shocked at the prices
one of the things that Emma said in our video about sustainable fashion which made a lot of sense to me is that we've kind of been tricked into thinking that clothes are cheap. But if people along the supply line are paid properly, treated well and the materials are sustainable and good quality - clothes are expensive. This is why second hand is great!
@@morehannah Agreed! But are these expensive because they are designer or because they are sustainable? I mean, aside from presumably they are reused over and over by different consumers. And also, is the cost of shipping back and forth clothing every month considered in the sustainability factor
This Christmas I ordered myself a clothing box where they source the clothing from thrift stores and I am so excited to see what they picked for me!! Totally on board with the second-hand shopping feeling!
I'm so late to this (just subscribed so your vids are coming up in my feed) but I just wanted to thank you for content that's suitable for a gal in her late twenties! Renting higher end clothes for parties/meetings/giving talks or going to weddings is so cool! I've always known about it, but have never seen anyone in the UK with a similar figure to me actually give it a go ❤❤❤
Something similar to Onloan is an app called By Rotation. Also an easy way to get second hand clothes is from Vinted and Depop. I've shopped on Vinted quite a bit & it is great!
For the last 4 months or so I was doing Rent the Runway, which is a subscription service here in the States. They have an option for unlimited monthly rentals where you can keep 4 at a time but once you return one, you can get another. It's a bit pricey but i found it worth it, especially as I had gone through some weight fluctuation and I didn't want to buy a whole new wardrobe just to feel comfortable and confident and then have to do it all over again. The nice thing was that they have a shop in NYC so I could go before or after work to pick up items I ordered from the website or just try on things they have on-site. They do mailing services too but honestly my body type is so funny that for someone like me (curvy, plus size), I wouldn't recommend unless you are by one of the shops so you can try it on before committing. All that being said, I had to cancel this month for financial reasons and I already miss it! I don't care much about labels but I did notice that many of the items were better quality than I could afford otherwise.
I think this is an interesting concept and a cool / novel idea. The clothes looked great on you. I do wonder if sustainability is something inherently easier for those with money (like everything else in life)
I think that it’s a cool idea, but I find I would want to re-wear outfits that I put together. I also think the price is really steep for only a few pieces for a month. I want to be sustainable but not broke
The tiger dress looks like something the First Aid Kit singers would wear! Would like to see what they send each month for you! I am also not a fashion person despite loving clothes, so watching you struggle to find proper words to describe them is very relatable
I really liked the videos by tiffany Ferguson about her nuuly subscription! It‘s more items per month for about the same price, but you actually don’t have to worry about breaking anything because it‘s calculated in the price!
I would maybe rent a special occasion outfit but not if the only option is a regular subscription. I definitely wouldn’t use this service for day to day clothes because of the price! Also can you swap if something doesn’t fit?
I will happily pay 90 € for a pair of well fitting jeans that will last several years but I would not be willing to pay the same amount per month for renting 3 pieces. Just started sewing my own tops again after not finding something I like.
Thanks! I don’t really have the time to do it tbh. I know it’s meant to be better than giving to a charity shop but just a time thing. Also, feel weird about potentially selling any clothes that were gifted to me...
Get the Honey add on for Chrome and it's gets the discount codes for you! I like the idea of this maybe for an event where you would only wear it once but otherwise I don't think I would. X
I struggle with this on the basis that when I find something I love to wear I will wear it for years and to death! I think if I liked an item a lot I’d feel the need to purchase myself on for the steep designer price - not the most bank friendly way of shopping for me
i feel like this in a high street version would be worse because to source the clothes it would utilise fast fashion. obviously, the clothes are being reworn but considering quality they’d have to be rebought/replaced. this kind of service only works with designer/second hand pieces in my opinion because sourcing them originally can be done more sustainably (even though many high end brands unfortunately still use sweatshops etc).
i think a lot of people are missing the fact that these are all very expensive designer clothes, the mother of pearl shirt retails for over £100, the hayley menzies dress is £350 and the alexa chung skirt for £160! i think it’s a great way to sustainably treat yourself to designer fashion and try out new styles without the commitment or impact on the environment:)
I think I heard of British celebrities renting evening gowns and stuff for red carpets on there so they don't have to pay for a designer dress they will only wear once but then still get to wear something 'appropriate'.
I spend on average maybe $400 on clothes in a full year (shoes included), so I could not imagine paying $99 for 3 items that I would only keep for a month. That is a big no from me! Lol. I don't care about labels or fashion. I just want to look decent and be comfortable when I leave the house. :)
I feel like when I'd rent clothing I would either fall in love so much I wouldn't want to give the item back or not like it at all and never wear it... But conscious shopping and a small wardrobe does work well for me so maybe renting just isn't my thing (for now at least).
Thanks Hannah, after seeing you in the red top I now can't get Wuthering Heights out of my head On the renting of clothes note, the only time I've rented is for black tie events, and that's easily £100 for one evening, so for something a little special I can see this being an interesting thing to use. Blimey, that’s pricey. I haven’t even spent that much on clothes this year! One t-shirt from All Saints (sale), two M&S bras and some M&S pants. For this much I’d want to buy something that I can wear and enjoy forever.
This is a very cool idea, I just wonder about the sustainability of shipping back and forth if this was to be a solution for loads of people... ? Thrifting, shopping locally and sustainably can be expensive (e.g I love Reformation but damn) but doing this less often than buying fast fashion comes out to less quite often, not to mention the clothes last longer because of the quality
