There was a reason why the door at Taman Sari was so low, not because people were short but so that everyone who entered bowed as a sign of respect to the Sultan of Yogyakarta.

      Make sense.
Because even for short person, that door opening is too low for comfort
I thought it was for security / defensive purpose. A really tall person would have difficulty passing tru that path in haste. And it's easier to make blockages.

IF you could then visit the Land of Minahasa people or North Sulawesi
Capital is Menado, so people call us Menadonese
    - Ancient History
    - Over 800 years ago, Mongols landed here to live. A Genghis Khan General fled with his wife, a palae maiden with his entourage and families because a Genghis son wanted that woman.
    - The fable of Toar and Lumi, our Adam and Eve
    - A Christian Majority
    - Multi-Cultural from the Start
    - Tried to secede from Indonesia in the Permesta rebellion in which CIA Alan Pope jetted ammunition from the Philippines but was downed, survived and spent 8 months in a dungeon.
    - A Menadonese Mig pilot shot a rocket into the Palace office of President Sukarno, but he was not there. Pilot captured but lived on the promise to train pilots
    Food-wise
    - Menadose eat the spiciest foods
    - Menadones fried chicken considered best by world top chefs a couple of times
    - Unique foods:
    1 | Tinu'tuan (or Bubur Manado) Tinu'tuan is traditional Manado porridge. ...
    2 | Ayam Rica-Rica. ...
3 | Garo Bunga Pepaya (Garo Papaya Flower) ...
4 | Cakalang Fufu and other Seafood. ...
    5 | Mouthwatering Satay or Sate. ...
    6 | Klappertaart. ...
    7 | Nasi Jaha. ...
    8 | Panada.
    Places
There is archaeological evidence that North Sulawesi has been inhabited for at almost 30,000 years. In Liang Sarru cave on the island of Salibabu, archaeologists found stone artifacts and evidence of habitation 26,000 years
North Sulawesi is in the perfect location to become a multi-racial and multi-cultural society. The influence of the European colonists, missionaries, and Chinese traders can still be seen today in the architecture and traditions.
North Sulawesi was one of the first Indo-Eurasian communities. The first king of Manado was Muntu Untu who was half Spanish. Muntu Untu became king in 163ngs0, but not long after, the Spanish sold Minahasa (North Sulawesi) to the Portuguese for 350,000 ducats.
    MENADO
Things to do in Menado: Bunaken National Marine, Christ Blessing Statue, Statue of Jesus the Redeemer , Menado Town Square, Tangkoko Research station, Tunan Waterfall, Boulevard area, Menado Resort, Rumah Alam Menado Adventure Park, Kasih Hill, Tolerance Monument
    Top Attractions in Minahasa
    1. Lihaga Island - with white sand and many wonderful fish haven't seen before.
    2. Nain Island - It was so beautiful! The white soft sand, crystal clear water, green corals, sea breeze, everything is perfect
    3. Pulisan Beach- the beauty of the beaches is amazing
    4. Mount Klabat - Volcanos. It is also possible to do the trek without guides

Yap. Scam. Especially in the tourist spot destination. Be extra careful. Foreign tourists are their target. Maybe you should google first to get as much info as you can before visiting the tourist spot.
Ohya… one useful tip for both of you… always ASK the price of the food before… we local people always get scam in buying food especially in Malioboro area. The food sellers can overcharge like 5-10 times of the normal price.
Have a nice trip… enjoy the beauty and hospitality of Indonesia
