Thanks for this post. I grew up with many recordings from Decca/London of Istvan conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philarmonic and hearing some of them again just reminds me how great a conductor he was and his untimely death in 1973 deprived the music world of a major talent - something that is so rare to find these days. Also Decca put together the very best artists for their recordings, you only have to compare the quality of the soloists in this with more recent performances (Y.T.) to realize the superiority found here in the 1960's.

Outstanding performance of an outstanding and strangely neglected work. The over performed Requiem by Verdi has caused Dvorak`s work to be totally overshadowed, an absurd situation for such a wonderful composition by a composer who never failed to write anything other than top flight music.

Hi Paul. I couldn't agree more!! For me personally, I find Dvorak's setting of Dies Irae, in particular, even more moving then Verdi's (as much as I love Verdi's settings). But that's just me. Hopefully someday in the future, Dvorak's choral music in general will come to light much more.
