    I can't believe I come across this masterpiece by sheer luck and now. How much more I must be missing in life than I am consciously enjoying in it. How much goes unseen, unnoticed, yet worth seeing and noticing.

      Wait until you find out how many years behind schedule you are with the excellent/forgotten books. Try Robert Daley's Portraits of France (1991), which is almost without flaw.

    I have sung this masterpiece with my former choir Bergen Oratoriekor. There are segments in this work (particularly "Eia Mater Fons Amoris") that was impossible to get through, or sit and listen to, without someone among the sopranos or altos suddenly braking down in tears. It is all about the heartbreak of Mary as she watches her son suffer and die on the cross. The lamentation is audible throughout this profound musical work. Any mother would feel the endless despair and pain. It is deeply moving and profound. So heartwrenchingly mournful. And yet so unbelievably beautiful at the same time. Antonín Dvořák is genuinely one of mye favorite composers.

    What a masterpiece! I have never understood who deserves the most sincere ovation: the conductor/orchestra&choir -for a magnificent performance-; the composer -who seems took dictation from heaven- or his father, who saw the spirit of his son and provided an education. Considering that family business traditionally goes from fathers to sons, František Dvořák deserves an eternal ovation. He lost a helping hand; but the world gained Dvořák.
    I am in tears.

    When music creates an image with intended emotion in the mind, then the composer has delivered an effect that is worthy of any masterful notation. Perfection is an unreachable goal, but sincerity, passion and artestry are worthy aims. Here is a composition that beautifully extends his gift for story telling of lyrical proportions, with a depth of beauty that is abound with a happiness in such a sad way. Conveying a sombre mood with anguish and a happiness that we can all agree, that this man was born to delight us with sounds that are passionate lovers to any ear. This is the spirit of real music, to real people with real ideals in a world that has forgotten honesty and worship only the fake.

      In the catholic church on the second day of November, we are celebrating All Souls Day when we remember all those who are gone to the other side of life. In Poland a day before, on November 1st, we are visiting the tombs of our relatives, bring flowers and light candles there as a sign of memory. My interpretation of the painting is that this old lady is selling a wreath next to an elementary or she is remembering someone probably on that day. I might be wrong but this is what I think. Beautiful painting thou, don't you think?

    The context of this piece is absolutely heartbreaking. All three of his children had died within a short period of time.

      Well, I fact it is known that Jesús had at least one brother. Maria was "the virgin" but that has to be understood in a different context. Or let us say, every woman is a virgin AFTER having the first child. A different conception of virginity but it makes sense.

      Dvorak had nine children altogether. Only first three of them died very quickly.

    I had a possibility to hear about him as an ordinary man from a lady whose ancestors were his friends. One of the greatest world composers loved potato soup with baatsch /local speciality and beer....Beeing atheist hearing his music I have to think of God or the origin of wonders of this world

    Translation (Edward Caswall, 1849, Lyrca Catholica)
    At the Cross her station keeping,
    stood the mournful Mother weeping,
    close to her Son to the last.
    Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
    all His bitter anguish bearing,
    now at length the sword has passed.
    O how sad and sore distressed
    was that Mother, highly blest,
    of the sole-begotten One.
    Christ above in torment hangs,
    she beneath beholds the pangs
    of her dying glorious Son.
    Is there one who would not weep,
    whelmed in miseries so deep,
    Christ's dear Mother to behold?
    Can the human heart refrain
    from partaking in her pain,
    in that Mother's pain untold?
    For the sins of His own nation,
    She saw Jesus wracked with torment,
    All with scourges rent:
    She beheld her tender Child,
    Saw Him hang in desolation,
    Till His spirit forth He sent.
    O thou Mother! fount of love!
    Touch my spirit from above,
    make my heart with thine accord:
    Make me feel as thou hast felt;
    make my soul to glow and melt
    with the love of Christ my Lord.
    Holy Mother! pierce me through,
    in my heart each wound renew
    of my Savior crucified:
    Let me share with thee His pain,
    who for all my sins was slain,
    who for me in torments died.
    Let me mingle tears with thee,
    mourning Him who mourned for me,
    all the days that I may live:
    By the Cross with thee to stay,
    there with thee to weep and pray,
    is all I ask of thee to give.
    Virgin of all virgins blest!,
    Listen to my fond request:
    let me share thy grief divine;
    Let me, to my latest breath,
    in my body bear the death
    of that dying Son of thine.
    Wounded with His every wound,
    steep my soul till it hath swooned,
    in His very Blood away;
    Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
    lest in flames I burn and die,
    in His awful Judgment Day.
    Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
    be Thy Mother my defense,
    be Thy Cross my victory;
    While my body here decays,
    may my soul Thy goodness praise,
    Safe in Paradise with Thee.

    I just discovered the source of the epitaph on my parents headstone. Then I wrote this poem;
    Today I went to see the place and tend the grave where my mother laid.
    I lifted her stone from beneath the earth and beheld her epitaph.
    “While my body here decays
    may my soul thy goodness praise,
    safe in paradise with thee.”
    The final verse of that Firm Mother, who stands so stoic by the Cross of Thee.
    As I departed, I saw among those eternal stones
    That mark the place of loved one’s bones,
    The Virgin Mother, sinking into the earth
    And leaning against that tree
    Waiting to be placed upright for Thee.
    What a gift this was from my Mother
    When I found her sinking beneath the earth
    And leaning against that tree.
