    When metal heats up to a certain point, it reaches its “metal threshold frequency” it sheds away its electrons from the surface. This makes the surface bond with surrounding elements to close the electron shell, the blue color on the bars when you heated it is there rapid formation of copper oxide

    Here's something you might be interested in:
    To remove the oxide layer perfectly, you can leave it sit in warm vinegar overnight.
    It will for a blue solution and all the oxide will be in there with the waste copper. You can recycle that with 2 graphite pencil leads used as electrodes, connected to a low voltage powerbrick. The solution will go back to vinegar and all the waste copper that you would grind away will just collect on the electrode

    Cool vid. I've melted aluminum in my home foundry and it's rewarding but only if you're safe about it. The best source is recycled PC parts like heat sinks and scrap solid aluminum. Most think cans are the way to go. NOPE! You have to melt a ton of them and there will be a LOT of dross/slag. My #1 piece of advice is to make sure your mold has ZERO moisture on it. Like even a drop of water will prove disastrous. I only mention it because you play around with ice in the video and it may give people the wrong impression. If you pour molten metal into a mold with water in it, even a drop, it will explode. I don't say this to you because you know what you're doing, only to anyone else reading. I've seen too many videos of dudes in beach gear handling this stuff and it's scary. Temps high enough to melt metals is a serious thing and shorts and flip flops is begging for 3rd degree burns.

      You should let the process of natural selection take its course, because anyone wearing flip flops and short shorts(hopefully not cut off jeans😂👌) while they melt metal are great candidates for a Darwin DeEvolution Award. Trying to look cool and doing life threatening stuff while disregarding safety are things that don't hold together very well. Just let the kids know that you either look cool for the blooper reel/freak accident compilation vid, or be safe by handling scary stuff while wearing the apropiate gear and keeping all your fingers and toes, and your face from not melting away (its the money maker, so always protect the face👌)

      Chris Harris Ive worked on the same industrial site for 20 years and I get all my cables from my electrician friend and out of the scrap bin when I’m allowed to go through it , I started collecting my cables probably two years before I started melting so I have a decent stockpile but unfortunately I cannot get many more cables as often as I would like as the bosses have now stopped allowing us to take them😒but I still get a tiny bit here in there👍🏻

    • @RealRuler2112
      @RealRuler2112 5 лет назад +21

      Chris Harris - This comment is one of the most ignorant ones I've ever read on youtube. (Which is really saying something!) You assume he's a thief, but there are dozens of legitimate ways to obtain scrap cable. If you'd bothered to watch any of his other videos, you'd know he works in industry and they generate scrap of this type. He's also cut apart his old storm door and melted the aluminum... you going to accuse him of ripping that off somebody's house next? Automatically thinking the worst of somebody is indicative of your attitude & mindset. =(

      Tell Ea-nasir: Nanni sends the following message:
      When you came, you said to me as follows : "I will give Gimil-Sin (when he comes) fine quality copper ingots." You left then but you did not do what you promised me. You put ingots which were not good before my messenger (Sit-Sin) and said: "If you want to take them, take them; if you do not want to take them, go away!"
      What do you take me for, that you treat somebody like me with such contempt? I have sent as messengers gentlemen like ourselves to collect the bag with my money (deposited with you) but you have treated me with contempt by sending them back to me empty-handed several times, and that through enemy territory. Is there anyone among the merchants who trade with Telmun who has treated me in this way? You alone treat my messenger with contempt! On account of that one (trifling) mina of silver which I owe(?) you, you feel free to speak in such a way, while I have given to the palace on your behalf 1,080 pounds of copper, and umi-abum has likewise given 1,080 pounds of copper, apart from what we both have had written on a sealed tablet to be kept in the temple of Samas.
      How have you treated me for that copper? You have withheld my money bag from me in enemy territory; it is now up to you to restore (my money) to me in full.
      Take cognizance that (from now on) I will not accept here any copper from you that is not of fine quality. I shall (from now on) select and take the ingots individually in my own yard, and I shall exercise against you my right of rejection because you have treated me with contempt.

      im no smelter either so ill use a quote from mgsrefining.com on borax "It also plays an important role during the gold refining process as a flux. In metal refining, a flux is sort of like a cleaning agent because it helps remove impurities from a sample. ... This is because using borax as the flux reduces the melting point of all the elements in a piece of ore, including gold."

    • @CuriousEarthMan
      @CuriousEarthMan 5 лет назад

      I was also thinking some kind of flux would help, as some of the wire was oxidized. wasn't sure what elements to use for it, though. Also, I wonder if vinegar or a touch of 'tarn-x' dipping polish, then a water rinse and heat-dry too would brighten the ingots and coins more easily.

    Question; how much did it cost in fuel to melt all that down? I have been wondering if it's worth it to melt copper into ingots before selling it, as opposed to just selling the scrap. I know you get more for copper if it's in a convenient form (blocks of copper, for example) but I don't know if the difference is enough to justify the fuel costs and time costs it takes to melt them down.

      *scribbles in notebook* Day 3...I'm still awaiting a reply to my question. I look down and notice newer comments getting replies from the OP of the video, and even "loves" or whatever it is when that little heart shows up designating that the OP liked someone's comment.. I will sit here still, patiently, while I see if my question is to be answered. perhaps it's too complicated of a question to simply answer without much work, and the OP doesn't feel like it....understandable, they owe me nothing, and I wouldn't expect them to do anything at all, especially if they have to go out of their way. Still. A response would be nice, as I'm interested in possibly doing this myself. Perhaps soon though, I'll receive an answer. Only time will tell, until then...I will wait, and I will write in my journal. *closes notebook*

      🤣😂sorry matey I’ve had about 1000+ comments this week , The scrapyard will not pay any extra for ingots and some scrapyards won’t even take ingots as they don’t know if you’ve melted copper around a big piece of steel unless they cut it in half, I do this as a hobby it is definitely not worth doing if you’re in it for the money as you would lose all profit in time and gas used. You would be better off selling these ingots on eBay as they can get about 4 to 5 times their value as people love hand poured bars .

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 лет назад +4

      And it cost me about $7 AUD in gas for these ingots

      @@bigstackD hahaha, no worries at all and thanks a ton for the reply!! I'm liking the eBay idea honestly. I'm not sure what the value of copper is in AUD per pound (or per kilo...since I believe that's the system used In...well everywhere except the US lol ), but I've read scrap copper goes for about 4 USD or so for a pound so 16 - 20 USD per pound is super attractive and might be worth the extra trouble. But then...shipping lol. Anyway, thanks again for clearing that up AND for showing how you strip wires. It looks so brilliantly simple!!! Been trying to figure out how to strip tons of wire, and seems that is my answer!

      The intrinsic value of his melt though is worth hundreds if not thousands of times more than that $100 piece of paper, in fact I thought that was the reason he did it, to kind of make a point about the difference between paper money and real commodity metal money.

      Copper is extremely cheap. A single gram of gold costs more than all this copper. You would need 20 lbs of copper to buy one single gram of gold. That's twice the amount as shown here.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 лет назад +7

      Yeah it’s not worth much but you could probably make 3 times that if you sold them on eBay , but these I’ll keep for possible future casting projects I recon 👍🏻

    I am not sure how I stumbled upon this video. Very cool. I have a question. What is the purpose of smelting copper wire to make ingots?

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  5 лет назад +2

      Well I’m glad you stumbled this way hopefully you’ll hang around as I do alot more than just ingots matey 😉.
      Actually this is just a hobby so I melt my cables and scrap and stack them up for now and they will eventually be re-melt into something else in a future casting project. I never ever take my metals to the scrapyard and once I run out of scrap to melt I’ll start taking ingots off-the-shelf to use them in things I cast 👍🏻😁

    • @BabaG
      @BabaG 5 лет назад +1

      Cool so you are a artist who works with metals. Awesome, if we did this in Brooklyn, we would have to do it on the sidewalk (no drive ways) and then they would call the cops since we ain't white. But I like what you are doing, who knows maybe someday Ill move out into a small town by the sea & do fun stuff this, in the meantime Ill feast on your works. Thanks for sharing.
