When metal heats up to a certain point, it reaches its “metal threshold frequency” it sheds away its electrons from the surface. This makes the surface bond with surrounding elements to close the electron shell, the blue color on the bars when you heated it is there rapid formation of copper oxide
Scrapper Max thanks for the info I was wondering why that happened.
Or you can just simply say that oxygen oxidize the ingot when he stop burning it lol
Nah he was just showing us an example of the notorious "blue ball" syndrome
Can you preserve the blue color on the copper, some way? Like if you were wanting it ti stay blue on a piece of copper artwork??

Here's something you might be interested in:
To remove the oxide layer perfectly, you can leave it sit in warm vinegar overnight.
It will for a blue solution and all the oxide will be in there with the waste copper. You can recycle that with 2 graphite pencil leads used as electrodes, connected to a low voltage powerbrick. The solution will go back to vinegar and all the waste copper that you would grind away will just collect on the electrode

One day this man is gonna melt down a scrapped car.
i want that to happen
He’ll probably melt Ingot when his time comes at this rate.
We'll all be waiting
if they made cars out of copper he would have done it already.
i was going to ask what happened to that
I'm only just now realizing that ingots/bricks of metal are traditionally shaped like trapezoidal prisms so that they could be easily ejected from molds shaped like that.
🤣👍🏻🤘🏻😆🤘🏻
What about coin moulds?
NANI?!
When the copper freezes it will shrink the tiniest amount and release from the molds very easily
Muffin pans also work.

Hey kasim The transition from liquid to solid of any element is called freezing. Solid is metal is frozen the same way liquid metal is melted. 😉

🤘🏻😆🤘🏻
Cool vid. I've melted aluminum in my home foundry and it's rewarding but only if you're safe about it. The best source is recycled PC parts like heat sinks and scrap solid aluminum. Most think cans are the way to go. NOPE! You have to melt a ton of them and there will be a LOT of dross/slag. My #1 piece of advice is to make sure your mold has ZERO moisture on it. Like even a drop of water will prove disastrous. I only mention it because you play around with ice in the video and it may give people the wrong impression. If you pour molten metal into a mold with water in it, even a drop, it will explode. I don't say this to you because you know what you're doing, only to anyone else reading. I've seen too many videos of dudes in beach gear handling this stuff and it's scary. Temps high enough to melt metals is a serious thing and shorts and flip flops is begging for 3rd degree burns.
I agree completely 👍🏻
You should let the process of natural selection take its course, because anyone wearing flip flops and short shorts(hopefully not cut off jeans😂👌) while they melt metal are great candidates for a Darwin DeEvolution Award. Trying to look cool and doing life threatening stuff while disregarding safety are things that don't hold together very well. Just let the kids know that you either look cool for the blooper reel/freak accident compilation vid, or be safe by handling scary stuff while wearing the apropiate gear and keeping all your fingers and toes, and your face from not melting away (its the money maker, so always protect the face👌)
Trash? Try stolen like the rest of you "copper repurposers" and "copper recyclers" who jack wiring out of buildings when nobody is there on the weekend.
Chris Harris Ive worked on the same industrial site for 20 years and I get all my cables from my electrician friend and out of the scrap bin when I’m allowed to go through it , I started collecting my cables probably two years before I started melting so I have a decent stockpile but unfortunately I cannot get many more cables as often as I would like as the bosses have now stopped allowing us to take them😒but I still get a tiny bit here in there👍🏻
Chris Harris - This comment is one of the most ignorant ones I've ever read on youtube. (Which is really saying something!) You assume he's a thief, but there are dozens of legitimate ways to obtain scrap cable. If you'd bothered to watch any of his other videos, you'd know he works in industry and they generate scrap of this type. He's also cut apart his old storm door and melted the aluminum... you going to accuse him of ripping that off somebody's house next? Automatically thinking the worst of somebody is indicative of your attitude & mindset. =(
Loved the video, but then towards the end I just felt like it was missing something (this is the 1st ever video I've watched of this channel, so I didn't know if it was simply getting sold or what) but then it cuts to that epic treasure collection, and I instantly felt satisfied. Love that stuff!

Tell Ea-nasir: Nanni sends the following message:
When you came, you said to me as follows : "I will give Gimil-Sin (when he comes) fine quality copper ingots." You left then but you did not do what you promised me. You put ingots which were not good before my messenger (Sit-Sin) and said: "If you want to take them, take them; if you do not want to take them, go away!"
What do you take me for, that you treat somebody like me with such contempt? I have sent as messengers gentlemen like ourselves to collect the bag with my money (deposited with you) but you have treated me with contempt by sending them back to me empty-handed several times, and that through enemy territory. Is there anyone among the merchants who trade with Telmun who has treated me in this way? You alone treat my messenger with contempt! On account of that one (trifling) mina of silver which I owe(?) you, you feel free to speak in such a way, while I have given to the palace on your behalf 1,080 pounds of copper, and umi-abum has likewise given 1,080 pounds of copper, apart from what we both have had written on a sealed tablet to be kept in the temple of Samas.
How have you treated me for that copper? You have withheld my money bag from me in enemy territory; it is now up to you to restore (my money) to me in full.
Take cognizance that (from now on) I will not accept here any copper from you that is not of fine quality. I shall (from now on) select and take the ingots individually in my own yard, and I shall exercise against you my right of rejection because you have treated me with contempt.
kgbme that’s utter bullshit. What so people can’t collect nowadays? What if you’re a smith in your free time? What if you’re a chemist?
The color change is probably thin film interference caused by a layer of copper oxide forming on top of the ingots, beautiful tho.

I’m an HVAC contractor with hundreds of of lbs if metal at my disposal each month, is it more profitable to melt & purify the metal or just keep scraping it. Either way it’s beer and petty cash for for me?
It’s definitely not profitable doing what I do but I just do this as a hobby not to make money that’s why I stack it all up and don’t sell it but if you did it like me you would lose all profit in time and gas so just keep on scrapping it mate. Scrapyards won’t pay anything extra for ingots and most of them won’t even take the ingots because they don’t know what’s in them👍🏻.

@@bigstackD thanks for the clarification. I had the same question. I doubt wire thieves would take the the extra effort and money to make ingots. Keep up the sweet videos! 🍻🍻🍻
The ingots might be worth more to a hobby machinist depending on type of metal and what they do. But typically most scrap yards don't pay enough of a difference for prep of metal beyond removal of non metal stuff or size when dealing in heavier steel.

add a splash of borax to the crucible, that'll burn off all impurities and you should get a copper colored ingot immediately, no polishing required
😉 cool bro 👍🏻
Arthur Lager I no smelter but I think the borax just keeps it from oxidizing I do not think it burns off any impurities. Just keeps it from oxidizing. Like rust on iron. Just oxidation
Arthur Lager please correct me if I'm wrong
im no smelter either so ill use a quote from mgsrefining.com on borax "It also plays an important role during the gold refining process as a flux. In metal refining, a flux is sort of like a cleaning agent because it helps remove impurities from a sample. ... This is because using borax as the flux reduces the melting point of all the elements in a piece of ore, including gold."
I was also thinking some kind of flux would help, as some of the wire was oxidized. wasn't sure what elements to use for it, though. Also, I wonder if vinegar or a touch of 'tarn-x' dipping polish, then a water rinse and heat-dry too would brighten the ingots and coins more easily.

Question; how much did it cost in fuel to melt all that down? I have been wondering if it's worth it to melt copper into ingots before selling it, as opposed to just selling the scrap. I know you get more for copper if it's in a convenient form (blocks of copper, for example) but I don't know if the difference is enough to justify the fuel costs and time costs it takes to melt them down.
*scribbles in notebook* Day 3...I'm still awaiting a reply to my question. I look down and notice newer comments getting replies from the OP of the video, and even "loves" or whatever it is when that little heart shows up designating that the OP liked someone's comment.. I will sit here still, patiently, while I see if my question is to be answered. perhaps it's too complicated of a question to simply answer without much work, and the OP doesn't feel like it....understandable, they owe me nothing, and I wouldn't expect them to do anything at all, especially if they have to go out of their way. 🤣😂sorry matey I’ve had about 1000+ comments this week , The scrapyard will not pay any extra for ingots and some scrapyards won’t even take ingots as they don’t know if you’ve melted copper around a big piece of steel unless they cut it in half, I do this as a hobby it is definitely not worth doing if you’re in it for the money as you would lose all profit in time and gas used. You would be better off selling these ingots on eBay as they can get about 4 to 5 times their value as people love hand poured bars .
And it cost me about $7 AUD in gas for these ingots
@@bigstackD hahaha, no worries at all and thanks a ton for the reply!! I'm liking the eBay idea honestly. I'm not sure what the value of copper is in AUD per pound (or per kilo...since I believe that's the system used In...well everywhere except the US lol ), but I've read scrap copper goes for about 4 USD or so for a pound so 16 - 20 USD per pound is super attractive and might be worth the extra trouble. Haha🤣 actually it did burn but they are fake notes matey I just edited out the 5 seconds it took to walk back and turn the gas on . Trust me if I was gonna pretend to burn a real note ide to a hell of a lot better editing job than that😉👍🏻
The intrinsic value of his melt though is worth hundreds if not thousands of times more than that $100 piece of paper, in fact I thought that was the reason he did it, to kind of make a point about the difference between paper money and real commodity metal money.
Joe Smith That would still be an unnecessary waste of money haha. Not to mention a crime. Btw what a strange statement. We only say not to mention in order to mention something that we want to add haha.
I enjoy the hell out of these videos man thanks for making them I like the inaugural cracking of the beer at the beginning and end
👌🏻😁
Well, a lot of copper wires which I hope we all like... The question is there any electricity still in the neighborhood or people have to use candles and flashlights? (joking 😁)
Hahahahaha.
Of coarse there is but the other suburb has some dark spots in it🤣😂. No matey I get all these from the scrap bin at work and I have been collecting them for years I’ll eventually get through them all it’s just taking for ever👍🏻😃
Ok, sounds good 😉 It's good that your neighbours still have electricity. They need to be sure that you always have some copper or this situation can change 😁
yes those wires looked ANCIENT! DEFINITELY months er "years" old.
Yuck!! iron jack drink a real beer ffs lol.
On a serious note. Whats that grab dollar wise at the scrap yard
Great stuff mate, seems to be a popular video too.. lots of views and comments...
See, real sounds, no crap music and something interesting to watch makes people happy lol.
😉
bigstackD Casting gonna watch some more brass ones. Can't wait to prank the wife and son lol.
Daddy will find a bag in the woods and open it in front of them hahaha.
I'm surprised you haven't been robbed by some bogan for all that metal.
strong bogan running away with $50 and 200Kg metal hahah - thats exactly why we invented cash
I wouldn't Rob him. Besides the vicious attack dog you didn't see all the spiders he sets free oh, you got to be careful of people that don't talk much. Probably have some kind of melted down Warhammer then all the spider Fighters he's set free will clean your bones
Apache Chief I welcome the challenge of someone trying to rob me matey 👌🏻
I’m in a gated community and have the biggest house here and my security measures outweighs every house in the neighbourhood tenfold, Plus I got some close friends that ride around On their big black bikes that would love nothing better than to have some excitement at this current time but let’s not go into that🤫.
At the end of the day the stacks worthless if you compare to other things in life. And I guarantee there’s no Bogans around here buddy😁👍🏻.
@@bigstackD basically no robbers are gonna get your stacks
@@bigstackD damn bro, I'd kill to have a life like that...
Love the wire/cable striping jig!
Total value $25. Did I understand that correctly?
Yup. And that's on the more expensive side for quality.
Copper is extremely cheap. A single gram of gold costs more than all this copper. You would need 20 lbs of copper to buy one single gram of gold. That's twice the amount as shown here.
Yeah it’s not worth much but you could probably make 3 times that if you sold them on eBay , but these I’ll keep for possible future casting projects I recon 👍🏻
2.75 per lb just stripped. ingots get more
If you are prepping fe a crisis it might come in handy.
But so do other skills that are not office work.
I wonder why I don't collect much scrap cause of him haha😂
Just found your channel. I think I'll stay around lol
Awesome bro 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻. Be sure to check out my other stuff if you like this you love my other videos😉👍🏻
Same!
I enjoyed watching your video I'm big into scrapping but id rather do it the way your doing it melting it down Dude you have an awesome setup in your garage. Great video👍👍💪💪
Cheers bro 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
You better bloody well watch my other ones they’re a shit tonne better than this one I did😉👍🏻
Ca't wait for you to melt that Suzuki
Thumbs up for Tomb Raider's theme.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻for your tomb raider comment 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I am not sure how I stumbled upon this video. Very cool. I have a question. What is the purpose of smelting copper wire to make ingots?
Well I’m glad you stumbled this way hopefully you’ll hang around as I do alot more than just ingots matey 😉.
Actually this is just a hobby so I melt my cables and scrap and stack them up for now and they will eventually be re-melt into something else in a future casting project. I never ever take my metals to the scrapyard and once I run out of scrap to melt I’ll start taking ingots off-the-shelf to use them in things I cast 👍🏻😁
Cool so you are a artist who works with metals. Awesome, if we did this in Brooklyn, we would have to do it on the sidewalk (no drive ways) and then they would call the cops since we ain't white. But I like what you are doing, who knows maybe someday Ill move out into a small town by the sea & do fun stuff this, in the meantime Ill feast on your works. Thanks for sharing.
No worries bro enjoy the show, I release a new vid every Friday . And if you do check out my stuff ide suggest go newest to oldest as my first vids I did years ago are really really bad 🤦🏻♂️.
I
I think the copper ingots look the best. keep up the great work.
