In terms of "already but not yet," I've always felt that the things in the Bible really happened and were also symbolic prophetically, simultaneously, if I'm understanding correctly. At any rate, it's a deeper level of nuance most will not entertain. We seemed to be trained to pick a stance and stick with it at all costs rather than entertain the grey area, or at least the more encompassing concepts that obtain more than one possibility, or at worst, yours *and* your oppositions view points

The fruit that Adam and Eve eat is never named but the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is a fig tree in Jewish tradition. Jesus is cursing the fig tree saying “may no one ever eat from you again”. Jesus (as a typological “new Adam”) says this to reverse the effects of the fall. He knows his death and resurrection will triumph over sin so his cursing the fig tree is symbolic of that.

Dr. Heiser truly shares scriptural knowledge like nobody else!
Here's an idea I'm trying out. Please anybody feel free to give feedback. I'm reading Mark 13:14 to 27 as an internal, personal process, and every piece seems to fit. Moreover, the passion and death can be read as an enactment of that process.
It starts like this: "the disastrous abomination set up where it ought not to be" is a serious sin or false idol that is in your heart. "let the reader understand" is Mark letting you know that he's not talking about the temple in Jerusalem. The tribulation starts with "When you see" because you cannot begin removing sin or a false idol until you see it. The lines about the urgency of escaping mean you must renounce the sin or idol as immediately and completely as possible. The line about distress means this renunciation is the hardest possible thing a human can do, but even so, once you're in it it won't be as long as you think, God has shortened the time. vs 21-23 reinforce that this is not to be taken as events in the physical world. "after that time of distress" can be read as once you have dethroned the first false idol from your heart, the the sun and moon (other possible false idols) will not attract you, and the stars will come falling from heaven (sin after sin will be eliminated from your life.) The powers will be shaken means you will no longer be easy to trick. After this purification, then v 26 is what you will see. Only you, just as God's voice at the baptism is only heard by Jesus in Mark. Just like the transfiguration is only witnessed by the most intimate and most prepared of Jesus' disciples.
I'd appreciate your reactions to these reflections.

    There's a problem.
In the Matthew text, there does not appear a division. Some of those listenjng to Him were apparenly to see these signs of His coming.
The passage of 24:34 is just skipped over lightly. The section in Luke 21 eqivalent to this on the abomination of desolation says that," when "you" see Jerusalem surounded by armies".
How can it not be the end of that age when God was dealing with the nations and those beings? He ended the temple and sacrifice once for all. How are we waiting for the return of Christ any more except that we are taught it because the litteral earth is not a paradise now as everyone is expected to believe?

    Jesus Curses a Fig Tree
18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.
20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.
21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
The true meaning of the parable is about the false Preachers or Prophets that Jesus met when he began to preach in Jerusalem, False preachers who taught the most learned of the people, changed the true teaching of Christ. Jesus is reasonable and will not look for fig fruits if it wasn't its season. The parable took place while Jesus was with his disciples, Jesus gave an example to His disciples of what to do with the False Preachers, those false preachers are barren that they don't bear fruit, it was a demonstration revealed in a parable through the fig tree. In the bible, a faithful Preacher is likened to a tree >> Psalm 1: 3
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. >> The parable shows that Jesus expects His disciples to be Friutful Preachers, whether if its within their season or not. That fruit are the souls that will be saved by teaching ONLY the pure doctrines of Christ.. no more, no less Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that is wise stirreth up souls.
    Proverbs 3: 17-18
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
Mark 13: 28-31 Lesson of the Fig Tree
28 “Understand the lesson from the fig tree: When its branches have withered away, and the leaves have sprouted, you know that summer is near. 29 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, Christ is even at the door. 30 I assure you that this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Here are the verses about the Preachers who are corrupt and do not really teach the doctrine of Christ like the priest speaking in this video:
    Jude 1: 10-13
    10 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
11 Woe to them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
    12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; clouds without water, carried along by winds; trees in the winter without fruit, twice dead, uprooted;
13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
    Matthew 7:15
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

The fig tree is symbolic of the nation of Israel(the people of the covenant) the leaves are symbolic of the many generations of people of the nation of Israel...every year it puts out new leaves...each year new leaves represent each new generation of Israel....the figs themselves represent the fullness of the leaves(the faithfulness of each generation of Israel) ....
SO....when Jesus cursed the fig tree because it did not produce good fruit at his time in Jerusalem(it represented the fact that the nation of Israel during Jesus time had not produced the the good fruit of faithfulness.....the messiah had come but the nation's generation at that time had rejected the messiah(didn't produce the good fruit of faithfulness as a good tree would have) ....it was symbolic of cursing the nation of Israel....because Israel had for the most part rejected the messiah(Jesus Christ) ......this is confirmed when in 70 AD Rome conquered and destroyed Israel and killed millions of jews....that was the cursed fruit tree...
SO.....then Jesus takes it even more further.....he says after having cursed the fig tree(meaning now it had shriveled up and all its leaves had died immediately and Jesus had told the tree that no man will ever again eat fruit from it again) about 2 days earlier(recall the fig tree is symbolic of Israel).....Jesus responds to his disciples asking him when He would return at the end of the age to consummate all things....he responds saying "when you see the fig tree put forth its leaves....you know that summer is near and all the these end times signs are at the very doorstep, amen I say to you that generation will not pass away until all things be fulfilled.'"-Matthew 24.
SO, what does Jesus mean to say when he had just 2 days earlier cursed the fig tree.....now 2 days later in telling the disciples about his 2nd coming to earth he tells them about the fig tree giving forth its leaves again.....well
Israel ceased being a nation at 70 AD....about 40 years after Jesus ressurection and ascension to Heaven....that is the fig tree(Israel became a shriveled up dead no leaves producing haunted land...) for how long? until 1948......when Israel as a nation was reborn....
So, the cursed fig tree had no fruit and had effectively died from 70 AD to 1948....as Jesus cursed it....in fact it Israel as a nation did not produce nationhood for almost 2000 years...but that fig tree began again "producing its leaves " in 1948.......the curse was lifted that year.....
Finally Jesus says in Matthew 24...."this generation that sees the fig tree bring forth its leaves again will not pass away before all the end times are fulfilled in Jesus's 2nd coming."
SO....what do we have here?? We have the promise from Jesus that 1 final generation that sees Israel(the fig tree that was cursed about 2000 years ago that came back to life in 1948) come back to life("putting forth its leaves again"...that is its curse ending) that final generation will not pass away(die of old age natural causes) before Jesus 2nd coming .
So, what is the typical biblical definition of 1 generation time span? 70-100 years would be the full lifespan of 1 generation.
THUS if you take the 1948 rebirth of Israel as the beginning of the final generation "seeing the fig tree put forth its leaves" then you simply add the maximum 100 years date to the 1948 to get the approximate maximum latest date of Jesus's return to be 2048.
However....it says in Matthew 24 "the generation that sees these things come to happen will not pass away until all be fulfilled" Thus a newborn in 1948 would not perceive nor "see these things happen" So, the next question is what age person typically can "see and understand what is happening...of course that would be about the age of maturity or about 14-20 years of age.....then you can subtract 20 from 100......you get about 80 years being the length of the duration of the final generation on earth before 2nd coming of Jesus Christ....
So 1948 + 80 = 2028............this is the likely time around which Jesus 2nd coming is to occur...
SO what then else? Daniel and revelations tell us there is a 7 year period of the end time before Jesus returns....during the final 3.5 years is the time of the anti-christ before Jesus returns....that is the time when most of the earth and many christians will betray Jesus Christ and accept the mark of the beast and true christians go through the "final tribulation" ....towards the end of that 3.5 year period around 2025-2028.....is when Jesus finally returns for all who have died for the truth and for all who are still alive but waiting upon Him...

@Sunny Toppo The prophecies contained in Scripture are never linear but rather cyclical, so that which happens in one era, will occur again in another, we see this with the types and shadows contained in the Mosaic Law which also applied to Messiah, hundreds of years later.
In essence then, yes, the generation Messiah spoke to was that generation living then, but it also applied to a future generation that will fulfil completely that particular prophecy. In the chapter in Luke that speaks about the signs and wonders, earthquakes, pestilences, etc, immediately afterwards, Messiah says 'learn the lesson of the fig tree...' he is then referring to the catastrophes in the preceding sentences, well in AD 70, Messiah never returned in the clouds, there was never a time such as will ever be again, so this prophecy has to have its fulfilment in the future.

The noise of the day of the Lord is bitter; There the mighty men shall cry out. 15 That day is a day of wrath, A day of trouble and distress, A day of devastation and desolation, A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness, 16 A day of trumpet and alarm Against the fortified cities And against the high towers. 17 “I will bring distress upon men, And they shall walk like blind men, Because they have sinned against the Lord; Their blood shall be poured out like dust, And their flesh like refuse.” 18 Neither their silver nor their gold Shall be able to deliver them In the day of the Lord’s wrath; But the whole land shall be devoured By the fire of His jealousy, For He will make speedy riddance Of all those who dwell in the land.”
“Day of the Lord”-Verse 15 That day is a day of wrath,...18 Neither their silver nor their gold Shall be able to deliver them In the day of the Lord’s wrath
    God’s Wrath on the Earth.
Many believers use the phrase “7-year tribulation” which as far as I know is nowhere in the Bible. There are references to a 7-year period both in Daniel 9 and Revelation 11,13 but that’s all it is a 7- year period. There is a “great tribulation” that Jesus mentions in Matthew 24
21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be…”
But if we read the Scriptures correctly this is reference is after the abomination of desolation verse 15 which Daniel 9:27 says will be in the middle of the “week” the middle of the 7 years. So if we wanted to say “3.5 years of great tribulation” this would be more biblically accurate.
The beginning of the “week” or 7-years begins with a peace covenant with many nations. Then there will be 3.5 years of peace until the false messiah aka Antichrist stands in the Temple and declares himself God. Revelation 13 5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. 6 Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. 7 It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every [d]tribe, tongue, and nation. 8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”
The term tribulation is also confusing because we think that when Jesus said in John 16:33 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
When we hear “7-year tribulation” or “great tribulation” we think that the church must endure it.
But that’s not what the verse says. Jesus says “In the world you will have tribulation;…”
In the world, we have humanity and the god of this world and the kingdom of darkness.
We will suffer mankind's wrath as Jesus did and we will suffer the enemy’s wrath but the Bible says Jesus endured God’s wrath for us.
Romans 5:9 “Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.”
John 3:36 “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. “
Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
    Etc.
In 1 Thessalonians 5 after the “Day the Lord” reference.
4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be [a]sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.”
Notice it says “9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, “
Romans 2:5 “But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.”
Now the “Day of the LORD” could be one day but no matter what your view of Eschatology is, it is widely accepted that the 1 Seal of Revelation 6 is the beginning of the final period of time that leads to Christ’s return.
To me, it’s interesting that the Bible says we as believers aren’t destined for God’s Wrath and then in 2 places Ezekiel 38, Revelation 6:12-17 where the Gog/Magog war is fought.
Ezekiel 38:18 18 “And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,…”
Which means Israel has to exist.
“…says the Lord God, “that My fury will show in My face. 19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: ‘Surely in that day there shall be a great [e]earthquake in the land of Israel, …”
    Verse 23
23 Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” ’
Then if we read Revelation 6:15-17
15 And the kings of the earth, the great men, [j]the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, 16 and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”
So if we aren’t destined for God’s Wrath and clearly during the first judgments the unbelieving world recognizes that God’s wrath has come it is conceivable that we aren’t here.
Many might say we are but just not affected. My question to those who study this topic is where does John 14:1-3 fit in to your Eschatological timeline?
John 14:1-3 1“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many [a]mansions; if it were not so, [b]I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also..”
If Jesus returns to rule from Jerusalem Zechariah 14 then when do we go to the place Jesus has been preparing for us in Heaven?
It’s not in death because he says “3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself”
Notice Revelation 6 God’s Wrath on the Earth “ the Day of the LORD” begins, but Revelation 11, 13 it maps out the 7 years
From Daniel 9, we know that the Hebrew Calendar of 360 days is used. And Revelation 11:3 3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”
    1,260 / 360 days calendar =3.5 years.
Verse 7 7 When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.

Would it have anything to do with a symbolic gesture of how Adam and Eve put on fig leafs to cover their nakedness and shame before God so Christ was cursing the cursing we put on ourselves in our sin?

Mountshilol We all were lost until we learned about the amazing grace that can be ours, if we repent of our past, and ask Jesus into our heart. We were all the personification of the lost lamb in Christ’s parable found in Matthew and Luke.
      Matthew 18:11-14
11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?
13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.
14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
      Luke 15:4-7
4 “What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.”
      Isaiah 53:6
6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
Our sin debt has been paid for by Jesus. It is the free gift offered to each of us to accept. He is knocking on the door of your heart, so that you’ll invite him into your life, and He will sup with you, and you with Him! Hallelujah!
Nothing can ever separate us from His everlasting love!

You've set up a false test for Jesus my friend. The real question for us as we read this is "what is really going on here? Why does Jesus curse the tree? and What is Jesus trying to teach us? Certainly one thing is the verses following in Mark teach about faith and prayer.

The one definitive thing you can say about God and Jesus is.....that they are drama queens. The whole dramatic set up, the doom and gloom....not to mention the blood sacrifices! Must. Spill. Blood. And all the cryptic parables and words. Oh...the drama.... Let's scare the chit out of our followers into worshipping us!

One again Heiser skips over the simple Prahat then runs amuck with Pesher. He likes to sell books, with overdrawn elaborated talking points that become diluted and this stuff creates a doctrine following so keep an open mind that Heiser does not become the end point.
It’s a tree with a leaf with fruit that has seeds, if the fruit is not harvested the leaf will fall off and the fruit will be exposed to the yellow ball of fire in the sky and burnt up. The leaf is the covering, now go and study the Fig tree life cycle and God will show you the associated simple meaning and complex meaning and allow scripture to interrupt scripture and stick with the 1 testament Hebrew letters, pictures, meanings and numerical value, let Christ educate you as you inquire and meditate and then go to the Logos 2nd testament Greek.
    Blessings
