I think the son was drinking, the alcohol just didn't show up in the blood test. It's a well known fact that people de-materialize if they are drinking alcohol. It is standard procedure to check blood alcohol levels after anyone who has disappeared reappears.

Yes it’s true, we only had 2 tv channels back then. ( I’m 55) watching tv was bad for you in those days so that was a political choice only having two channels.
