At least the water is flowing down through the roof outside the walls! Wow. Unless they are a charity case, just bid exactly what it should take to do it right and that's it. People will learn why a random handyman job is not worth it. Happy New Year!
Hi Brian!!! Could u please make a video on gutters??? I went to Home Depot and there’s tons of gutter guards, but after research, it seems like it’s not a good idea bc it can damage the roof and doesn’t work. Also, more footage on ladder safety!! I know u have mentioned stabilizers. Any other products? Hope u have a PROSPEROUS 2023!!!
I bid out jobs for roofs, decks and siding and constantly am amazed that people talk about how professional we are, how we are the only ones who actually answer the phones, show up on time and get back to the client with a bid in a timely manner....yet they still take the cheap route and use the guy who took 3 months to return their call!!
Yes, same here. Then they want to complain how bad a job they did and don't usually fix the problems. Then, they get mad at the repair bill to fix the original issues. It's almost as if they thought they were going to get a good job at a cheap price.
@@GrandRoofingInc We all want that Bentley for the price of a Buick! Stay safe brother! I really appreciate your videos, I have only been in the business 1 year and between you and Dr. Decks you guys have taught me a ton.
What's frustrating about that is whoever ripped out the old jack could lifted up the shingle above it and even just tucked that inch underneath the shingles. it's not the right way to do it, but it woulda shed 99% of the water. 2 minutes, tops.
I agree, no other trade will come out on a weekend and give a free estimate. At very least, charge an inspection fee, and deduct that from the price of repair if hired for the job.
I agree. I call an electrician or plumber to come out to review work I want/need done and they charge me a $65 fee refundable if I hire them for the work. That's good business practice. Your time and expertise is valuable. They're using you.
You told them what needed to be done and they tried it or got their nephew in law to do it, thereby saving money because you troubleshoot for free? Am I warm?
Hey, we are planning to put our own roof on and I had a few questions if you have the time to answer. We are doing shingles. We live in central TN and we have a hold house with rafters Osb vs plywood ? Does plywood need h clips? Do you have a video on ventilation?
Plywood is always better than OSB if you can afford it. H-clips should be used in between any kind of wood decking, to allow for expansion. I don’t think I have a whole video dedicated to ventilation.
I completely understand your annoyance at having your time wasted twice. I typically don’t get too annoyed, instead I use that as an opportunity to show the customer, “you went cheap and you got cheap results”. If the first time I offered a repair, the second time its pretty much only a full re-roof. The exception of course is if the majority of the roof looks new minus the isolated issue. In that case I may still offer a repair but the price has to go up because I wasted gas plus wear and tear on my company truck twice. I like to be nice and understanding but sometimes you have to send the message “either you are serious about having your roof problem resolved correctly or go away”.
If the leak belongs to me from a repair or my crew on a full roof I would go look/fix it over a holiday. If it’s someone that contacted me before and didn’t want to pay my prices to get it fixed properly. I would tell them I’m booked for the next week and any previous quote will have an additional 25% charge for material increases and fuel charges.
What a mess. Unreal. I work for an electrician and he told me to avoid touching the wires in case of a break in the insulation. Guess I was lucky in the past, ugh.
I'd be frustrated if I was in your position, I was in a position to eventually buy out a contracting company i worked for, i started getting involved with chasing jobs and doing estimates and it turned me right off. Something about spending hours of my time just for the client to decide last minute they dont like the price or go with someone else and I get nothing for it really rubbed me wrong. When I hire someone to do something for me, I don't go for the cheapest, I go with someone I know I can trust, who's either got good reviews or has done good work for someone I know. I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low cost is gone"
I personally don't and would not spend the money for them. As long as the roof nail placement is in the right spot, you shouldn't have to worry about nails rusting out. If stainless steel nails are used, during the next future tear off it would almost be impossible to get the nails cleaned up out of the ground. I don't know that they even make stainless steel coil nails for air nailers, so it would probably all have to be installed by hand.
On a second call out, seeing that whoever did the job you bid in the first place trashed it, I’d invoice 250 bucks for a second visit and decline the job - then refer them to the yellow pages.
That looks like an electrician worked on that riser and didn't know how to put on the roof boot. Duke is normally only responsible from the pole to the riser. The riser down is the homeowner's responsibility to hire an electrician to install.
I'd probably clamp that thing a little tighter to the wall and center it on the hole then use the existing flashing and flash it. If they want to spend more money then replace the OSB and a few shingles and flash it.
OMG. Well, I learned one thing... if your home is not pristine - workers think they can be lax. They just won't do a good job if they deem the house otherwise shitty in general or some ways. As if you don't deserve any semblance of quality work. It's sad.
Patch it, silicone it, secure the boot, install a guy wire or two on the service, wrap that shit up and go home. Get a cold one and call it a day. (After dinner)
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I remembered that property! Happy New Year.

Your riser pole doesn't need to be attached to the house and secure but it does help. It does help.
😆 🤣 😂
I'd be worried about the amount of water funneling into the meter Box!
Does it magically stay upright for years?
It does if it is more than 4 foot above the roof. Also below the eaves needs secured
The riser doesn't need to be fastened to the house??

When u say u bid out the jobs ......... that means u dont do the work yourself...... ur the middle man.....

Happy New Year Brian. I wish you and the family the best for 2023.
Happy new year Brian 🎉
Thanks! Happy new years!

Have you tried a minimum charge to estimate, with an additional charge to repair onsite? Especially in "off duty" circumstances ?
I agree, no other trade will come out on a weekend and give a free estimate. At very least, charge an inspection fee, and deduct that from the price of repair if hired for the job.

Happy new year Bryan dude .
Peace n love from Cumbria UK 🇬🇧 ❤️
Happy new year!
You told them what needed to be done and they tried it or got their nephew in law to do it, thereby saving money because you troubleshoot for free? Am I warm?
Since this is the second time they called you out of give them a high estimate but ensure them the work will be top notch.
You’re exactly right. I’ll tell customers you’ll get what you pay for in regards to workmanship

Same to you!
That is amazing!
Hilarious, thanks for the giggle
What a mess. Unreal. I work for an electrician and he told me to avoid touching the wires in case of a break in the insulation. Guess I was lucky in the past, ugh.
I’d rather be at home. I don’t like dealing with this type of customer. Or at the very least charge them an inspection fee for a second visit.

lmao that is funny for sure, thanks for sharing

Great video. Thanks for sharing
I have hundreds of jobs around here at. Albans Vermont
Looks like roofers learn on the job from other bad roofers !!
Would never do work this way
Charge double!!
Even at worst put boot on by cutting it and roofing it in temp
They always call you back, you should require payment when they call prior to going out the second time.
Anything after hours gets a higher service call rate.
Common issue in this area
On a second call out, seeing that whoever did the job you bid in the first place trashed it, I’d invoice 250 bucks for a second visit and decline the job - then refer them to the yellow pages.

Shout out brother

They forgot the over under rule? Lol it looks better that way? Lol

Repairs like this don't really pay unless you can make a day of them
Wow
This is where you get to charge for their mess up.
Not over charge just a fair charge for ALL your wasted time
just build a little water diverter out of flashing and call it good haha
Patch it charge him double for wasting your time twice 😂
Patch it, silicone it, secure the boot, install a guy wire or two on the service, wrap that shit up and go home. Get a cold one and call it a day. (After dinner)
I charge for my expertise. I am no joke in roofing. 500$ 1 hour
What I do is find another roofer that's not so snotti
Foam it and leave it - tell m you’ll be back after holidays
Lot a drama for a roof u are not working on.......... We would love to see a job you actually did......
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
That's bad lol
Pretty sure you’re qualified enough to nicely tell them to efff off
