  • Summer 2019, a commemoration of the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester, two hundred years earlier, in 1819. For Commoners Choir this meant carrying a facsimile of a flag that was made in 1819 in the village of Skelmanthorpe in Yorkshire, walking it fifty miles across the Pennines to Manchester, and singing a concert there - at the Peoples' History Museum - to honour the thousands of people who gathered, demonstrated, sang and were attacked in the name of basic human rights.
This is the 'Skelmanthorpe Flag Song', a plea for the traditional enmity between Yorkshire and Lancashire to stop and a reminder of times when we came together and gathered on hilltops to make our voices heard.
This song was sung together with Manchester's 'She Choir'. Here is a photographic record of our walk - pictures taken by Phil Moody.
