  • Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Steam Polar Express & Frostburg Flyer
    Featuring the former C&O 1309 Steam Engine, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad operates from Cumberland, Maryland to Frostburg, Maryland. The Western Maryland (WM) was a railroad that served Cumberland, Maryland, along with a branch line that ran between there and Frostburg, as well as stretching to other small towns, like Hancock and Connellsville. In 1973, the WM joined the Baltimore and Ohio and Chesapeake and Ohio railroads to group into the Chessie System, which would eventually be completely merged into the new CSX transportation system. The Cumberland-Frostburg branch was subsequently abandoned. In the late 1980s, the city of Cumberland started seeing the old branch line as a possible tourist attraction, so a joint effort was formed; Allegheny County contributed $585,000, the city $2,470,560, and the city of Frostburg $338,427 to purchase the corridor. As part of the deal, the newly formed Scenic Railroad Development Corporation (SRDC) was given the old WM shops in Ridgeley, West Virginia, a 1913 station in Cumberland, and an 1891 Cumberland & Pennsylvania wooden depot in Frostburg. From 1989 to 1991, the trackage was used by the Allegany Central Railroad before the SRDC began operations themselves as the WMSR.
    WMSR's excursion trains start in Cumberland at the Western Maryland Railway Station... except for the Polar Express trains that operate out of Frostburg seasonly. Check the www.wmsr.com website for updates on which trains are running from which station to be sure before planning your trip!
    Built in 1913, the Cumberland station also houses one of the six Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park visitor centers as well as other attractions and offices. From there, the trains follow a former Western Maryland Railway line northwest through the Cumberland Narrows, a deep water gap formed by the passage of Wills Creek between Haystack Mountain and Wills Mountain, parts of the Wills Mountain Anticline geological structure. They then proceed up the Allegheny Front through a water gap formed by Jennings Run, pass Mt. Savage, and terminate at the former Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad depot in Frostburg. The train returns to Cumberland by the same route. As of this writing the turntable is not in use at Frostburg as the WMSR 1309 steam engine is too long to fit on it!

    I first saw 1309 at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in 2006 - looking very sorry for itself - into looks superb after its restoration.
    This video enhances all of the scenes to another level - stunning drone photography - a pleasure to watch

    This is a wonderful video of the former Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad's steam engine #1309 being used on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Your coverage of the steam engine pulling the train from Cumberland, Maryland to Frostburg, Maryland was wonderful. The drone footage was amazing. The drone footage starting around 5:19 of the 1309 departing the Ridgeley Yard in Ridgely, West Virginia is mind blowing. Thank you for the historical information about George Washington being in this area during the French and Indian War.

    LOVE Western Maryland's 2-6-6-2, it's a baby big boy! They just completed a tough resto, seems the C&O rode these hard and put them up wet with the absolute minimum maint during their short revenue lives. Acme Cinematography is just freaking killing it, eye candy! And your sound design is more than worthy of my home theater system... Eastern railroads are just so cool, this is the stuff layouts are made of! THANK YOU!

    Acme Cinematography you have blown me totally away with this video of my favorite childhood and young adult railway as I was born and raised near the tracks of the Western Maryland. Your art of photography and your editing are beyond excellent. Enjoyed this one just like the great Santa Fe tracks across Arizona and New Mexico. Thank you so much for these great videos.😀😃😄😍🤩

    Do they still use the turntable in Frostburg? When i was on the Wild Mary about 15 years ago it was in use.

    • @AcmeCinematography
      @AcmeCinematography  Год назад +1

      They do use it just can’t with the big steam engine as the track going into the turntable is too tight of a radius. Shorter steam and diesel locomotives can use the turntable though!
