How do Essex, Boston, and Steinway pianos sound compared to each other?
In this video, pianist Maren Selvaag will make a direct comparison and play the same piece on the Essex EUP-123, Boston UP-126, and Steinway V-125 pianos. Can you hear the difference?
Gisle Daus from Steinway Piano Gallery Oslo will then ask Maren about how she experiences the differences.
We recommend using headphones or connecting to external speakers in order to hear the differences best.
The recording was made with Neumann KM-184 microphones without any kind of sound processing.

This was very valuable. When the lady played on the Steinway, I heard the better sound immediately. It sounded imdeed fuller ans warmer. The action is impossible to compare by listening. I totallt agree with the lady about the sound of the steinway. Thanks for posting!

Hi! Glad you appreciated our video. It is indeed a difference between these instruments, and we find that people who come by our gallery all have their preferences when it comes to the sounds of Essex, Boston and Steinway. Even two instruments of the same series can have their own characteristics and timbre.

Steinway uprights are infamously finicky. Boston uprights have a good reputation and are manufactured by Kawai, a company who's very experienced in uprights.

For me, the Steinway!! The Steinway sounded with a "touch of velvet or satin".

That's a vivid description. Did you know a Steinway piano is built with the exact same materials as the concert grand D-274? No compromise on models

Thanks for the video. Those pencil mics are too far away and arent picking up enough bass frequency, so they all sound pretty thin

What is the value of the Steinway over years?

    • @steinwaypianogalleryoslo

Hi eastudio, this depends on the model and how it has been taken care of.
But as a reference, an O-model produced in 1960 now has a value of 9.3 times the original price of the instrument.

It really really depends. You cannot assume that your Steinway will increase in value over time. If they keep their good name, then it will not decrase maybe a quickly as other brands, but if you look at their prices on the secondhand market, you will get a better sense of their depeciation. An instrument is a tool and not an investment unless you are already buying an antique and know your business

There is no comparison. The BOSTON and ESSEX pianos are a "want and can't". Salutations d'Orléans, France.

Boston and Essex certainly aren't Steinways, but they are good instruments. I just purchased a Boston UP-118 that will be delivered on the 23rd of October. I'm super excited about. That being said, I'm hoping one day to move up to a Steinway upright, and then a Steinway grand through my local store's trade-in program.
I'm super excited for my Boston UP118 though. I have been practicing on a Wurlitzer spinnet for for years and the difference is night and day as far as the touch and tone are concerned.

Hi Bernardo! You know, in Norway we hire out Essex pianos as an alternative to buying. Maybe this solution is available through your local Steinway dealer to?
