Shallow water is no obstacle for the 3-5lb rainbow trout on Canyon Ferry Reservoir in Montana. I have caught many 20"+ rainbows in a foot of water under 16" if ice. If they can fit under the ice, they will hunt it. It's fun to set the jaw jackers in super shallow water and watch the fish come right threw the hole when they go off 💪
I prefer to fish shallow. I often fish 4 feet depth for brook trout. For every species aside from crappie, burbot and lake trout I generally stay 20 feet or less. Depends on the lake/species I guess.
100% agree. super shallow dark bottom cuts canals with feeder creeks. gems
Nice to see Joel back
Good to see Joel again. I always pay attention to Joel because I feel he is a ‘wealth’ of ice fishing knowledge. Thanx Northland..
Thanks for the nice words Larry! Good luck this season.
Awesome vid with great info. A video like this helps give a person more confidence to hunker down and move slow in shallow water. Love it 👊

I've always fished shallow more often then not and love it. Trout all winter long too, 3 to 4 feet is deadly!
Love this! I'm sure this works best with weeds, but do you find it working well in lakes lacking vegetation?
You're right on, primarily in weedy lakes. I do fish a few flowage and backwaters lakes with few/no weeds, and then brush is awesome where present!
Where do you store all your wintertime crappy plastics? What kind of box or organizer?
I fish in 1-2 feet above weeds. literally 6-8" between ice and weeds. catch fish all the time.
What underwater camera are your using? it's super clear
I like fishing shallow. Not as tough now that I have an underwater camera. My Garmin doesn't work that great in less than 5ft.
What is your favorite rod ?

Marcum Pursuit HDL!
This is how I fish 90% of the time. Early ice shallow water (3ft!) you can catch nice bigger pike on the patrol.
