Bowlers can’t bend their elbow during the release. That’s why they have long run-up before delivery so they can generate maximum pace through “sling-shot” motion.
Mali making us proud even after retirement. He still has it, sad about the fact that the corrupted Sri Lankan politics and Cricket Board indirectly forced him to retire. Proud to be Sri Lankan!
7:01 here what he did was that he made a fast Bowl action but did a slower delivery. So with the action batsman thought the ball would be very fast but in real it was way slower.
That was a smart question Rick. Yes a batsman can come down the pitch and attack the bowl if he thinks the bowler is going to bowl a Yorker. That is why great bowlers have variations and mix up their deliveries every bowl to keep the batsman guessing. Yorkers are tough to play because they do not provide batsmen the length to swing at the ball.
5:16 what happened here was that the ball was going away from the batsman and it did swing- in and came in from the offside of the batsman towards his feet AND THEN WENT STRAIGHT after hitting the ground towards the middle stump. Awesome There were some balls in the videothat had a swing also
So ..the beauty of a Yorker is that the Batsman's natural intial blacklift of the bat is upward....and mostly you don't know when the Yorker is coming...so to get the bat down in time to counter it is counterintuitive for a batsman. Another beauty of a Yorker is that it's very very difficult to get any leverage or lift in shot of a Yorker. So even if you can get your bat to ball in time...it's very difficult to hit it long and hard. Btw if you saw closely...Malinga also bowls some slower yorkers.. which is even more confusing for the batsman...as it dips at a late point in the air...Slinga Malinga....is a Yorker extraordianaire
The reason most of them take a long run up is to get rhythm and speed in the ball. Unlike in baseball a bowler in cricket cannot bend his arm ...he has to roll over his arm over the shoulder....so to get the speed and momentum they take the long run up...
Hey Rick to answer your question - running fast generates momentum and then that momentum helps in generating velocity when you realease the ball from straight hand (without bending) and also the power or thrust of shoulder and wrist gives more extra pace and speed. That's why they have to run in order to get the maximum momentum and speed required.
He is also nicknamed SLINGA due to his slinging action at the time of delivery. He was insanely fast till he hung up his boots. Only blemish one can think of is T20..... mainly because iits batsman friendly approach
When considering a throw where you can bend your elbow then as rick said it doesn't matter you are throwing by running or stationary. But in cricket bowler not allowed to bend his elbow. In that case to throw in higher pace bowler has to come by running long distance to attain certain velocity before releases the ball.
Rick is so intelligent. He is talking about stepping out and hitting before it pitches. Well that's what we call converting a Yorker into a full toss. That's the plan batters actually have against yorkers
Also yes, the batsman is allowed to go down the pitch by taking few steps forward...it can help him counter the swing and lowness of a Yorker...but then again it can work against him ...as the batsman doesn't know if the bowler is going to bowl a yorker...if a bowler bowls a bouncer at high speed and the batsman is taking steps forward before hand....chances are the batsman is going to get hit in the jaw at high speed.
Malinga was so known for his "slingy" bowling action and it's so hard to pick the length to the batsman when he release the ball. He is the only well known slingy bowler in Cricket history yet. Many people were so curioused to know that how accurate bowler he is, specially when it's coming to yorkers.... So proud about him! and thank you guys for the reaction.... ☺️❤️❤️👌🙏🇱🇰
Yorker is effective when it's coming in too hot to handle or if you have enough variation on the slower one that batsman misjudges it. Too slow of a yorker (is pretty much boundary) or very consistent yorker is pretty easy deal with for international athletes.
Malinga was lethal, still remember the game where Dhoni and Kohli showed the world how to deal with it, and they dealt with utter dominance in that india vs Pakistan match. If you want to see consistent swinging Yorkers with a more conventional action, watch the mixtapes cricket Australia did for two absolute legends, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

Yorker is the most difficult ball for a batsman to play if executed well by the bowler, because the ball will always come in contact with the toe end of the bat, thus hardly any power or timing will be generated however well the batsman hits a yorker. Malinga is known as the YORKER KING and during his peak days, the best of best batsmen in the world would just fall apart to Malinga's yorkers☺
With a longer run up, the bowler steadies himself to deliver more effort at the point of delivery. This ensures some more extra pace than the batsman expects.

A batsman can stand however the way he or she wants, the basic motive of a batsman is to hit the ball and run. A yorker was first developed by Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis the two iconic stalwarts of World Cricket. They were the first who developed that in their repertoire. I don't know the exact etiology of the term "Yorker" however, it simply means a delivery that, ideally would pitch or drop at the crease where the batsmen are standing to face the delivery delivered by the bowler. It's a tough one to bat at simply because it just shocks the batsmen, it's fast, it's at your toes. I remember a toe crusher bowled by the famous yorker to "Brian Charles Lara" the great WestIndies batsman, who was in a lot of pain when the ball had hit his toes.
Yorkers are one of the toughest deliveries because if you miss the length slightly it could end up being either a "full length" or a "full toss" which is easy for the batsman to hit
Yorkers means when bowl is bowled, it lands directly towards the toes of the batsman, and then most of them become clean bowled means stump falls down means out this is for American two guys above.
A Yorker by a fast bowler even if stepped out wouldn't make a difference if it accurate. The maximum one can convert it into is a very low full toss(hitting the ball before bouncing) which will be dipping so again very hard to hit. But to Rick's question the batsman can literally do anything he wants to hit the ball move ahead , move behind the stumps.
React to ab de Villiers fastest hundred, this is definitely entertaining and im sure you'll love it. BTW the name yorker originated because players in York (a place in england) started bowling those and soon enough lots of people started bowling those. But it originated from York so its called yorker.
Absolutely batsmen can go anywhere... nowadays batsmen tend to walk towards the ball or stand either much outside the crease or go back deep into their crease to convert Yorkers into full tosses or to get under the ball.
Batsman can do anything they want to like they step up, go back, sit down, lay down, etc.. Bowlers typical run to gain velocity.. You should remember that in Cricket it's not 'throwing' but 'bowling'.. They can't throw.. So of a round arm action, to gain some momentum and velocity, they run and bowl it
The batsmen can do what he wants and adjust and move into the ball. But again doing something like this is risky and is difficult considering the ball is coming in at great pace
Bowlers cannot bend their elbow while bowling. So to generate enough pace they need momentum. That's why they run a long distance. In case of the spinners, the ball doesn't need to have so much pace. So spinners have shorter run ups.
There are few ways of hitting a yorker most of which are defensive like just save your wicket not trying to score of it. Ms Dhoni changed that by inventing Helicopter shot specific for the yorker ball. Making mockery of yorkers .
yes the batsman can step out of the line and if they miss the ball and end up in keepers hands he can strike the wicket if the said batsman is out of the line like what you must have seen in ms dhonis wicket keeping skill video.
In cricket bowlers not allowed to throw the ball all speed coming from running and whole arm rotation u can bend ur elbow too ur arm should be straight. That's why they run.
Step up, walk down the track and hit him for a boundary- Virat Kohli's perfect recipe for Malinga. Virat is the one who decoded and unraveled the Malinga mystery. Nice observation and good point Ric!
Throwing like Baseball is not allowed in Cricket. In cricket bowlers should not bend their elbow. So just standing and throwing does not create enough momentum. So they run to gain momentum .

Bowlers typical run to gain velocity.. You should remember that in Cricket it's not 'throwing' but 'bowling'.. They can't throw.. So of a round arm action, to gain some momentum and velocity, they run and bowl it
If your ball thrown above the waist without pitching on the ground
Its a no ball
Otherwise its fine to direct ball(full toss)

The run up does add to the balls velocity. There are other factors also.

Did u all notice that malinga kisses the ball every time he starts his run-up to bowl.
It’s called Yorker because it was originated in Town of York in England
yes the batsman can step out of the line and if they miss the ball and end up in keepers hands he can strike the wicket if the said batsman is out of the line like what you must have seen in ms dhonis wicket keeping skill video.
In cricket bowlers not allowed to throw the ball all speed coming from running and whole arm rotation u can bend ur elbow too ur arm should be straight. That's why they run.
Please review more cricket videos...nice job guys...enjoyed it...looking forward to an American dream team in cricket too...
you can skip to 2:00 if you need
Step up, walk down the track and hit him for a boundary- Virat Kohli's perfect recipe for Malinga. Virat is the one who decoded and unraveled the Malinga mystery. Nice observation and good point Ric!
Throwing like Baseball is not allowed in Cricket. In cricket bowlers should not bend their elbow. So just standing and throwing does not create enough momentum. So they run to gain momentum .
Yoker king mali ❤️🤘
