    I had to laugh at the thread spool rack - the people asking about it must have been of a younger generation. I knew immediately what it was as anyone who sews or quilts recognizes it as a thread spool holder! Versions are still used today and funding an older one is golden!

      I remember seeing this type of thing in a HS chem lab for putting test tubes on to dry, that would have been my second guess.

    Last item is for cutting cheese (cake/pie?) into even wedges. Make first cut at bottom, then cut everywhere you find the number for the slices you want.

      It looks like something to ensure cutting equal pieces from a wheel-shaped something. I can definitely see a cheesemonger using the plate to cut up the big wheels of Gouda or maybe meat pies!

    Its for cutting a cheese wheel or cake into even sized wedges.
    You put it in the center , choose how many wedges you want and just slice at the appropriate number and you'll get 3 to 8 wedges of even sizes.
    You can see the man is holding a cheese wheel under his arm and the woman is holding the basic ingredients for a cake

    I recognized the fire tongs right away. I used to have a pair of a very similar design.
    I took a wild guess on the spit rack, and was delighted to find I was correct!
    The spool rack was easy, as I've seen many similar ones of various shapes and sizes. They're still available for the serious sewer, though probably mostly plastic instead of wood.

    The last item is a Plat Diviseur. The plate allows cutting food into equal portions, regardless of the number of guests, using the numbers. Starting at the bottom you pick how many slices you want in total between 3 to 8 and then cut from the centre out to all of the corresponding numbers around the plate.

      The rural French wore wooden shoes in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. They were known as sabot. They were famously thrown into machinery to stop them and is the origin of the word sabotage.

      Wooden shoes in french "Sabot" have been pretty common in rural France, Belgium or the Netherlands where they are called "Klompen". I think what is missing on this thing here is a glass ring filled with liquid. Probably a ring thermometer

      Maybe it is for dividing a wheel of Dutch cheese into a number of equal parts?

    • @Dwynfal
      @Dwynfal 3 месяца назад +4

      Absolutely French! The clothing is typical of the traditional breton costume, and over the figures is the word "Bretagne" which is Brittany in French. Breton means "of Brittany".
      It's a cake plate, the numbers are there to tell you where to cut depending on how many slices you want. Want 8 slices? Cut at the line next to the number 8 and you'll get 8 equal slices, no matter what diameter the cake itself is.
