Today, July 1, on his birthday, Sufjan Stevens is releasing two alternate versions of his song, “Fourth of July” via Asthmatic Kitty Records.
The new versions are “Fourth of July (April Base Version)”, recorded in Eau Claire, WI at Justin Vernon’s April Base studio, and “Fourth of July (DUMBO Version)”, recorded in Sufjan’s old studio in Brooklyn, NY.
The original version of “Fourth of July” appeared on Sufjan’s album, Carrie & Lowell - a deeply personal album written to process his sorrow after the death of his mother, Carrie. Sufjan would work and rework, and record and re-record, trying to manage the grief. The refrain of the song, “We’re all gonna die,” became an anchor in each version he recorded. At the time of its release and when Sufjan would perform the song live on tour, this lyric and fact of life seemed to shock listeners. Yet its solemnity invited them to feel comfort, connection - even joy - wrought from great pain.
The song has recently had a resurgence with listeners - which may speak to a deep national grief and a yearning to heal. As we head into this Fourth of July weekend - a U.S. holiday marked by war (and death) - it seems the exact correct time to be sharing them.
A limited run physical 7" in red will be released in December 2022, which marks the 10-year anniversary of Carrie’s death.

My best friend told me she loved this song and Sufjan Stevens music . She took her life 4 years ago on the 4th of July . It's been hard for me to move on since and I feel like I should've taken this song as a message. But for now , I'm gonna cherish this song because it's one of the only things I have left of her. ♡

My condolences to you 💖 🖤 my Mom died of cancer July 21st 2001 and I just now found this song a few days ago. I have woken up with it playing in my head and I've needed to listen to it every day since. This song manages to make me sad and make me feel better at the same time! Amazing! Sometimes you just need a good cry to cleanse your broken heart 🌟 and release all those locked up emotions

I lost my dad, my best friend, on July 3rd this year to his ten month battle from lung cancer. This song perfectly described the pain if felt and still feel from losing him, I’ve never been good at explaining how grief feels but somehow this song does so perfectly

The last time I visited my mother she said to me, "Do you know who I am?" in greeting as she lay on her bed, a slip of a thing, a shadow of who she once was, robbed of her memories and self. "Of course I do," I said, "You are my mom and I would know you always." And when I left to return to my home her hand held mine so tightly and she said, "Why do you have to go? I don't want you to." Her final words to me, and I had no answer. I knew I would never see her again. It'll be a year one week from today and it'll forever haunt me.

My Cat died this morning, for almost 20 years he was the best friend and companion one could have ever had and i am thankful for every small moment i had with him, for all the joy he brought me and everything he teached me about love.
But i will never see him again, i will never hear him meow again, i will never smell him again and know that i am home and safe. And it hurts, it hurts so much i can barely breath.

This song makes me remember that when I was at my mom's friend house, she celebrated my birthday on the 4th of July instead of July 21st. The date of this event was 2018. So I saw more people came then I hid in their restroom for hours till my sister came to the restroom to check up on me. I have social anxiety so that is why I hid. After most fireworks were over there were still some shooting in the sky, I came out of the restroom then lie on a hammock. I feel sad now that I didn't really spend my early birthday wisely but it was a memory to remember! Happy 4th of July! ♡

I think I figured it out. (Tune down a half step): 2220 4440 6650 4440 6457 4444 repeat and repeat 6457 and 4444 for the chorus. You can alternate and play around with having the high a string open or drone it on the 4th fret or 7th fret as you prefer. (6450 and 4447 and sometimes I land on a 2227 which is a fun chord to play!). It is definitely a great ukulele song to have in your repertoire!!

My dad just passed away on 14 of January I never knew this song was about grieve until one of senpai told me "It got an eerie aura to it, especially when you know that it's about losing someone...a song about grieve" till then I never listen to this song the way I used to . HELP URGENT LISTENER
Hello, can someone help me find a song? A while ago, I saw a lyric video of a song that I think is by Sufjan Stevens or IDK, where you can see two men in a room hugging and dancing slowly to the song. There were also light games like spotlights on them, I believe. Then one of them leaves, and one is left alone. I think one of them goes to war or something like that. I have no idea, but I'm having a terrible anxiety attack because I don't know what song it is.

My aunt died of cancer over 10 years ago. Her birthday was on the 4th of July. She was only 30 years old when she passed. In some ways, i think this song was made for her.
