There are all competition cars, which means they have been tuned out the ass. You can make any engine fast, I'm willing to bet that it's probably the same Opel engine, just tuned well.

Porsche 911 have been useful in rally for a long time, maybe not nowdays but all the way from around mid/late 60s to mid 80s it was one of the top cars in world championchips. If you search for rally videos in the 70s , specially tarmac rallys then you will find a bunch of porsches in there.

Actually, already before WWII, we had technology better than in most production cars of 70ties. Ever heard about electromagnetic gearbox?
