It's not surprising. Supermarkets started the decline of small shops and then online shopping. Many small shops now are charity shops. It won't change.

Grew up in Crewe 60s was there till till 2008 some family still there was a lovely place now sadly gone went fast with every nice building chetwood odeon ritz and everything else then the retail on the old speedway etc there’s virtually nothing left to go market hall and market shadow of its former life Lyceum hanging on so sad
Thats a bunch of gangsters that need seriously looking into, seems like one big circle jerk between the council, the house builders and the digital marketing companies year on year
Utterly depressing, much like many urban centres in the UK. However on the upside, retail parks are mostly thriving, and because they are based out of town centres, there's almost no begging and vagrancy, so I understand why families go there.
To be fair, you could make similar videos of any similar sized town in the UK, which are full of boarded up shops. What the video conveniently doesn't show is the retail park - positively thriving and where some of the shops have moved to - and just a stones throw from the town centre. No shots of the renovated market hall or how about Nantwich Road? There's a lot of problems with Crewe - some the local council can take the blame for, and some due to the change in shopping habits - but this video is very selective only highlighting the negatives.
Sometimes people like me, and others, in Africa likes to see the negative side of Europe just the way Europeans likes to see the negative side of Africa.😊
I am curious as to the day and time that this was videoed? Crewe is hardly bustling these days, but is busier than this when I go in. It is much quieter than when I used to visit as a youth, though. Typical of most UK towns I believe.
It's ok when HS2 arrives and the new shopping centre is built it will be lovely .... Ah scratch that .. HS2 cancelled... Shopping centre cancelled so just a patch of waste ground with bugger all on it. But at least the council have spent £11 MILLION building a multi story car park that will now never get used.
a good video, thank you for making this. usually the town has a few more people, but everyone's at the retail park. that's probably the biggest factor in crewe's downfall, all of the shops (especially M&S) moving there, thus causing traffic near the park and the town centre to become near derelict... the new car park wont do any good, either
RIP Crewe It got infested by alien communities, and the natives just had to get out. The newcomers ate subsidized food at work and imposed versions of their culture on the town whilst sending every penny they could back home. It was a perfect storm, the town had no footfall and died. The council gambled their last chips on HS2. Now that has been cancelled we are now in the terminal phase for both the town and the council.
crewe did home a lot of polish refugees after the war, one of the biggest groups. Dont think its them thats killed crewe, given its taken 60 years Problem is that, I believe youre wrong that its the 'aliens' fault, but youre not wrong for feeling forgotten about. Govt has made crewe and its people feel forgotten and the tories have blamed their lame attempt to hide this on the foreigner. There lack of investment on post industrial towns and more emphasis on cities and service industries make places like crewe fall to pieces.
Think too on its retail areas away from the town which have made it pointless to go into the centre. Its a case of badly planned coucil spending and community planning.
Yet ; The Pyms Lane factory in Crewe has been the Home of Bentley since 1946. The Bentley Motors factory is a fully integrated site - all aspects of car production from Design, Engineering, Manufacture, Quality, and Sales & Marketing take place in Crewe. The site covers an area of 521,111m2, with 166,930m2 indoors.
Grand Junction Retail Park is to blame for this. All of the big stores that drew people in moved there and smaller businesses that used to capitalise from that footfall could not survive. This is the result.
Sadly this film is representative of most of our towns nowadays. Swindon, for example, has a town centre that has been allowed to die. Even Falmouth, an archetypal coastal town with beautiful Georgian and Victorian building has almost as many empty shops as are occupied and it is a tourist town in the summer, but still it is dying.
Born and brought up in Crewe . I have seen a steady decline over the years. This is mirrors the area I live in now. Scunthorpe Town centre is very similar! Not much to attract you in!
as long as we have our tin baths then all is well. Testing the farcical covid tier system on Northern Towns showed us what they thought of us .@@TheVicar
@@markosmith8037 Indeed. Those arses down South had a higher infection rate and yet remained open. I assumed at the time closing down the north for much longer brought down the national infection rate figure, whilst keeping their businesses and economy running nicely down South Its as if they keep throwing the North under a bus for the benefit of keeping Southern Tory voters sweet
Most towns now around England have "dead" centre, suburban shopping centres are more and more common and accessible. Filming these vids during a Sunday early morning or evening is going to exaggerate the issue. Try doing the same during peak shopping hours to get more of a true picture.

I watched Crewe die from the early 2000's. It started with the eastern European invasion which just sucked the money and life out of the town. Like a lot of the UK its now just dead and full of asylum seekers. 😢

What you need is a few hundred illegal immigrants transporting to local hotels. The government will pump a lot of funds into crew then never been there except for when I’ve been changing trains because after all that’s all crew is known for trains, Hahaha😂
Well done video, thanks. It's amazing how an influx of doctors, architects and brain surgeons etc. can transform a place.
The natives here cannot even do those jobs the English people 😅

It looks lifeless and depressing, along with Runcorn these must be the most rundown towns in cheshire.
Have a visit to Bolton
There is a post office next to the cash converters now, which is still open.
The good news is you won't find one illegal immigrant sleeping rough. At least thats an acheivment 😂
Another good video tbh crew does not look as bad compared to Tunstall and longton or hanley have you done a video of Leek Staffordshire too 👌👌💯

Was this footage made on a Sunday? Despite all the boarded up shops there are usually more people about.
