    Tone reminds me of Bellona from Smite. She was unbelievably OP on release, got nerfed 3 times very quickly. After those 3 all the Bellona players said she was balanced (but was still S tier). She got 3 more nerfs after that. Still, to this day, she is A+/S tier. Why? Because the devs tried to balance her numbers when the true strength of her kit was she *had no weaknesses*. She had an answer to everything in the game. Her kit needed changed, not her numbers.

      wildcardNP Yep. Tone can outsnipe Ion and Northstar, use splash damage against Legion to use missiles while he has Gun Shield, can outrange Scorch, and outdamage Ronin.

    • @Katana314
      @Katana314 7 лет назад +13

      Sounds about right to me. One similar situation was McCree in Overwatch - they ended up adjusting his long-range damage quite a bit to make sure he couldn't snipe, and massively reduced Fan the Hammer damage to make sure that while he could take out fast flankers, he wouldn't out-damage tanks. So sometimes more specific damage changes can help.
      One possibility: What if Tone's lock-on rocket salvo had a long startup and end time? It would then only be useful at longer ranges, such that in the middle of a close fight, it would be ineffective to contribute damage.

      She can in her fuck outsnipe Ion. Northstar, yes because northstar is defenseless with a disastrous RPM but a competent FrothyOmen enlightened Ion?
      Hell to the fuck no.
      Well timed Vortex use removes the damage her missiles do, and the 40 alone is negligible. Manage out one Laser shot, with last second vortex walls to catch missiles and immediately neutralize them while minimizing the loss of charge for your laser shot, while hosing her with a NON split splitter rifle will both outpace Tones DPS AND screw their mental state as they get frustrated by the missile negation.
      I mained Tone, if those missiles aren't landing then your progress to a core just grinds to a near halt and your blood either boils or runs ice cold as you realize you may never get to that glorious Salvo core rain.
      While Ion, through proper resource management and simple tactics, is never in that position.
      The only worrying thing about tone is if she gets close. Remove your reaction time to her missiles and tone will fuck you over like nothing you've ever seen. Only legion comes close in that regard.
      If you tease out your battle, and slowly lure Tone out into the right position, the most damage you'll take the whole time will come from the missiles she lands as your laser core lines her up.
      Ion used right will never be outsniped 1v1 by tone.

    Honestly, it's her ridiculous power against pilots that makes me rage most. Every other titan has some weakness a pilot can exploit that gives them a chance.
    1. Against Scorch, stay high--it's really hard for Scorch to hit pilots on rooftops;
    2. Against Ronin, engage at a distance--all his weapons are short ranged, not to mention his very low health allows you to do significant damage before he can close the distance;
    3. Against Northstar, stay mobile--her slow-moving projectile combined with poor sights makes hitting moving pilots very difficult for all but the most crack shots, and the shot has no splash damage, but stay out of closed spaces unless you want to eat a cluster missile;
    4. Against Legion, his weapon requires a spinup, so you have about a second after he sees you to get out of the way, and unless he wants to stay very vulnerable, he can't stay in ADS forever, since it makes him even less mobile and restricts his view;
    5. Against Ion--well, Ion is a massive threat to pilots with her laser shot, _but_ that kit is quite limited in it's use and also has no splash damage; it also has a brief delay before firing, making it more difficult to use.
    But against Tone? All she has to do is look at you and you're dead instantly. The splash damage can even kill you when you're hiding. There is no viable counterplay to her as a pilot, other than hitting when she's not looking, which is something that depends on the other player, not you.
    Combine her supremacy against pilots with her top-tier performance against other titans, and you have yourself a full-on OP titan that needs more than a nerf: she needs a rework. At least until she's no longer the pick freaking 70% of the time.

    • @Elit3Nick

      I have a multi-layered strategy as to how to rebalance her:
      Stage 1:
      Remove splash damage from the 40mm. This prevent splash tagging when fighting titans, and significantly impacts performance against pilots and mobs.
      Stage 2:
      If Tone is still over-performing versus Titans (likely), increase tags to missile lock to 4, this also lessens the power of the double tag radar ping perk.
      If Tone is still over-performing versus Pilots and cleaning up mobs (unlikely), lower 40mm RoF, increasing damage vs. titans to compensate if need be.
      Stage 3:
      If Tone still over-performs versus titans, lower health on barrier.
      I doubt more would be needed, although I would still like to see the salvo-core redone so that it takes more skill to use. All the other titan's core ability requires at least some measure of skill and/or awareness. Tone can simply fire her missiles in the air and look at the enemy titan to guarantee hits.

    The best thing that has happened to me in this game is when I stopped playing Tone.
    I started multiplayer with her because the tracker riffle was my favorite titan gun in single player, and I was familiar with it. For a while I just thought people were being crybabies about her being OP. Then I started playing Ion and Scorch, and as soon as I stepped out from behind the particle wall, I saw what people were talking about.
    There are obviously way to deal with her, and I think playing her as my first titan helped me realize that. But with Tone, even shitty pilots can preform WAY above their level (myself included), and actual GOOD pilots are godlike. Playing other titans has made me a much better pilot, and I don't think I want to go back now.

      One thing that I feel would be beneficial to making Tone not only more nerfed, but actually interesting, is that instead of Tone being able to lock-on and hit multiple targets, she can only fully lock-on attack one at a time with her missiles. Also, when Tone does get a lock-on a Titan, the only way she can use her tracking missiles is by aiming at the target to fully engage her lock on. She can have multiple lock-ons on multiple Titans, but only the one she’s only fully locked-on will eat the missiles.
      What this would mean is that Tone could have multiple lock-ons on multiple Titans, but the only way she’ll be able to deal damage with her rockets is by aiming at one, getting a full lock-on, and firing at them. And, in order to use her rockets on the other Titans, she would need to aim at them to engage them. Note that she can only fully lock-on to attack one at a time. She would need to aim at each for a second or two to get a full lock-on, and to let it rip.
      The full lock-on would take a moment to occur, like some of the other tracking missiles do in the game, and possibly her tracking missiles could have a small cool-down to keep her from being able to use them too often. Another thing, is that if a tracked-Titan is not in sight, then their lock-on will disappear quickly. Only by using the sonar missile can Tone keep a lock-on one or more Titans (sonar can be patched, maybe to not detect pilots, if necessary).
      Finally, for Tones OP core ability Salvo Core, instead of unleashing a massive salvo of missiles wherever she aims, instead, she fires a whole load of missiles into the air, like a mortar. By using her other abilities, she can get them to barrage enemies that are locked-on already, or to randomly barrage an area that she had aimed at. This core ability would be called Mortar core, and could be used as a powerful, yet inaccurate and very delayed form of salvo core, and could either barrage a small area that Tone had aimed at, like I said earlier, or could fire at a distance by way of Tones lock-ons, like I also said earlier. This way, Mortar core could be as powerful as Salvo core, but due to inaccuracy, delayed time to hit the ground, and the skill required to activate at the right time, then this could be a useful yet harder to use core ability.
      Finally, particle wall. This one is fairly simple, as it is a shield wall that can protect Tone when she is getting shot at, and can allow her to fire back at her enemies without being shot. If I had to give a big nerf to particle wall, I’d either lower its power to take hits, or, and this idea would be more interesting, instead we made it more like Shield pilots. The shield is deployed like a shield pilot would deploy their shield walls, only instead, the shield wall is massive, but still has some delay in throwing it down and possibly has a weakness in the thing that produces the shield. Either way though, as annoying it can be, particle shield is nothing too interesting to change.

    I guess nobody will read this but whatever.
    Imo Northstar and Tone should exchange certain things to get them balanced.
    To start: tone has the best core, you can shoot around or over obstacles as long as you see the enemy and deal a lot, if not the most damage with one core. Ions core is harder to hit with and deals less damage, unless you hit the weak parts. I'm having trouble with northstars core to even doom titans as it is so easy to dodge. Also you get vulnerable af. Northstar needs more damage, based on how easy he/she (?) is to destroy while using the core. Tones core charges up way too easy for the damage she does - so either less damage or longer charge up.
    While northstar is a blast against titans, engaging pilots is suicidal i would say. Especially on consoles, you won't hit shit if the pilots use all the parkour possibilities they have. Also i observed that the hitbox of northstars fist seems to be smaller compared to all the other titans, misses are guaranteed.
    My solution would be: no splash damage on tones 40mm - she has a high rate of fire and can take quite a bit of damage, so engaging pilots will be more of a skill thing and not just randomly shooting walls while the killcount rises and rises.
    Instead, northstar will get her splash damage. The aoe will get bigger with charged shots and small without charging. Even without charging, northstar has a relatively low rate of fire and still no defensive abilities against pilots, so he/she (still no idea) would stay balanced.
    Added to that, increase northstars core damage, decrease tones core damage or increase tones charge up. Finito. I really like tones ability design, as it seems to be a lot of fun to the player base, and a rework would - most certainly - destroy that. But the splash damage is just too much when you think of how easy - compared to all the other titans - she is to play.
    All that is for Attrition and Bounty Hunt. I did not take the effects on LTS into consideration.
    I learned to counter Tone, and my Ronin eats them for breakfast after a lot of learning (thanks to FrothyOmen), but the point is: i like to fight with and against all the different titans, as they are so well designed. But all the other titans in my teams are mostly tones, and every titan i fight against is also tone, and that makes me really sad. I am really happy when i face a scorch, a northstar or an ion and i ridiculously love loosing to them, just because it is something else than just having rockets raining down on you, again and again.
    Thank you for reading, dear stranger, i hope you're not one of dem boring tone players.

    I hate how even a fairly skilled player such as myself is forced to give 110% when fighting Tone as any other Titan. You can be a drooling tard and play Tone fairly well, you can't exactly do the same with most other Titans.
    One thing that I started doing was run overcore with Ion after the buff. Generally I'm confident enough to be able to get a Titan early in game and by the time a Tone is dropped I have laser core ready for her. Another thing I tend to do is play at range with Ion, and use vortex shield to catch the tracking rockets and bust down Tone's wall and just plink relentlessly with the laser shot. I feel the effectiveness of most Titans is heavily map dependent, whereas Tone can play basically any map and do well.
    There's a lot of issues with Tone, she's not as much of a god now as she was before, but by far still the strongest Titan overall. It's almost pathetic that you have to make a video explaining how to counter her, when no such thing is needed for any other Titan.

    • @kolpoxj5651
      @kolpoxj5651 7 лет назад

      Ion is better than tone ? I play ion, and you need to take 3 hits before the tone lauch the missiles. And if you don't catch them with the vortex shield, you lose 1/4 of your health bar, while the tone just shot you from behind his wall.
      I play Ion, and I know how to counter every single titan, except Tone, because Tone has NO WEAKNESS.

    • @godNmor
      @godNmor 7 лет назад +1

      WarmSoftKitty any titan can shut down any titan easily if played right. However, tone needs way less effort than any other titan to do so. Ion has good abilities, but all of them are connected to his heat level, so you have to watch cooldown and heat simultaneously. With tone you dont need to watch anything as the shield is almost immediately ready again and the rockets just require three aoe hits and the sonar has a short cooldown and your core is ready at least after the first titan you defeat. Good for you that you seem to like ion and that you are good with him, but cmon boi... tone is op and ez af to play, otherwise there wouldnt be 90% of the playerbase maining tone. If you dont think thats proof enough, then sorry you are just stupid...ähem...delusional.

    While tone is counterable, she's still OP as hell. i mean ronin, scorch and northstar all have specific ranges they're good at, legion is slow as hell, and ions main gun is a peashooter to other titans in some sitations, meanwhile tone is effective at all ranges, can shoot around corners, has a faster cooldown pulse blade, is just as mobile as ion and has a shield that has no downsides and has a crap ton of health.
    regardless of how you look at it, tone still needs a nerf.

    I only use Tone because when I go into PvP, she’s the only Titan that I feel good with, not because she is stereotyped as “DuuR TiTAn Op”, it’s because I like the 40mm, the only other titans I use are Scorch and Legion, and the chonky bois are just a little bit too slow for me even with Dash Kit, just her play style intrigues me

    Looking back at this video 3 years on, I also agree in your spirit of learning to adapt and counter instead of whining and complaining, even tho I dun play TF2. While writing a guide for division 2, I encounter a lot of ppl on reddit complaining that various game mechanics are so bad, there is no positive game experience, massive fucked up, division deserves to crash and burn etc. But all their topics are on complaining things that dun go their way, like raid having no matchmaking even tho massive promised to have mm on all content, skills being nerfed and are unplayable even tho the skills were harming pvp with cheese players using unbeatable tactics, and the loot game being shit and there is absolutely no item management.....srsly, instead of whining on reddit, why not trying something new and adapt from changes?

    Why take out the partial wall when you can use it against her? If you are Ronin, phase dash through her and push her back through the shield. There, tables have turned. Remember to only do this if you can get close. If you need to sprint a fair distance to reach her, don't bother. Flank around

      Duuuude, I tried this one day on a whim because I thought "you know what would be funny? If I amped my own shots on a particle wall just to see how much damage I do." So that's what I did, stole the fuckers wall, unloading and my execution right afterwards. That was a good day. I personally recommend anyone to steal a Tone wall if you can worm you way in, no matter the Titan. But Ronin's especially lol

    One thing you didn't mention about North Star's utility is the Cluster Missile. All you need to do is shoot the ground next to or a wall on the other side of the shield and you can do a surprising amount of damage if the Tone doesn't move away. On top of that, if you use the cluster missile titan kit you can force the Tone to choose to either just take the cluster damage or move out from behind the wall to hopefully dodge your followup charged rail-gun shot.

      Birds of War How to play tone.
      Timing is everything, when rushing into battle as tone send out a pulse beacon to spot the enemy.After this rush them eat them take the first shot and block it with a particle shield.From here keep pushing on the enemy unless this is a legion.Keep pushing and take cover while waiting for your shield and you the beacon to know your enemy.Once you get your core ready use it when the enemy Titan is almost in clear site.Get as close to them as possible and use it before you die.When this happens you can take their batteries if you kill them.Now for dealing with legion, shoot at his legs when his healed is up and when it's down aim for his weak spot with your 40mm.Use your tracking rockets as often on legion and use your shield when you get close or they turn to long range.Thats how you play tone.To counter tone is easy just surround them and corner them.A good tone will counter this by using electric smoke and shield to conceal them self and run away.

    Legion isn't that weak vs particle wall. he shreds it in seconds, at least on console. I think the only problem about tone is that the Salvo core is just way too much damage, way too fast. I also think the particle wall cool down needs a fix because it basically only has like a 4 second cool down with reinforced particle wall. For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, basically the particle wall will actually go into cool down when it is deployed. it is the only ability that does this(minus sword block and tether trap because they weird). A lot of people compare Tone to the Atlas 40mm from Titanfall 1 but it is NOTHING like that! 40 mm does way less damage, and particle wall realistically only has a 4 second cool down...But hey at least we ain't got any arc cannons.

      also realisticly only bad or beginner tone players use the enhanced particle wall... the main sorce of damage comes from her rockets..as i prefer it mobility and more rockets just full poke potential. Against tones core, you've got one option: feinting. You want to make them think you'll retreat behind cover, so they send thier missiles upwards, then the second you see them looking up, dash forwards. By the time they've looked down again to direct thier missiles behind you're supposed cover, they'll have a hell of a time getting any of them to hit. Once they see you, blast them with your highest damaging one shot, and prepare for the particle wall. If they fire straight at you, feint one way, dash the other, and deploy your shield whilst walking forward. They will miss some or all of thier missiles, meaning you've got a lot more health than they thought you would. They think they've got control of your actions. You have to use that to make them make mistakes.

    As a Ronin against a single Tone, the key is to just dash through the shield. Most Tones go into panic mode when they have a Ronin in their face and backing them into a corner. If you just stay on them and keep moving around as you attack them they'll start missing their shots/crits making their clusters take longer.

  • @gahlwynfjorn3961

    Crazy how after TWO nerfs, Tone is STILL OP. Respawn gotta understand it's the way Tone is built that makes her OP, not her damage output. I think the ways to fix her are:
    - Players can see on their screen how many locks she has on you
    - Particle wall blocks shots from BOTH sides, meaning Tone can't fire through it either
    Even with these nerfs, she'd still be a good pick, but I think she'd be pretty well balanced

    • @snc237
      @snc237 7 лет назад

      Porter Burkett I don't think knowing how many lock is the right way. What if 3 tones (so help you) are shooting you. Is the game going to indicate what each tones got on you. It should be more so like TF1, when a Titan had a lock on you as like the guided rockets your Titan indicated that there was a lock on. I think an easier solution would just slow down rocket shot by half a second so you have time to process the shot coming.

  • @bronzieblue63

    I'm a Scorch main, and I've made it to G11 with him, I actually didn't know that when you bounce thermite canisters off of walls they have an arc, I honestly only ever tried to shoot them towards the wall about eye level and hoped they would bounce behind tones shields. That was honestly a first for me as a scorch player.
    But that asides, I'm kinda okay with Tone's current state as far as damage from her 40mm goes, I just hate her guts while I'm a pilot, the fact that her bullets have splash damage have more than killed me more than the fair amount they should've while I was behind cover.
    Then when I'm a titan, I groan in frustration when she cores me, I've literally seen teams with more than three tones on a regular basis in LTS. I remember vividly as scorch whenever she cores me when I'm at a little under half health, she kills me. My friend, who mained northstar and ronin, despises her due to the fact that if she gets one full set of tracking rockets off on him, she can instakill him with the salvo core. It's just maddening for the both of us.
    What we agreed on is that we feel that the amount of rockets tone fires in her salvo core should be reduced by 1/3. At that point, we feel the damage on her core would be balanced.

    I'm just hoping that Respawn is smart enough to ignore the complaints from the people who struggle against Tone. And it's not just for titans either. I see so many people complaining about some things in the game which always seems uncalled for, like the nerf to cloak (however pilot sentry is very broken). This video is a good reminder that in order to find success in this game, you have to use your head and actually make an effort to do well.

    Here's a couple things for you Northstar players out there:
    1) Cluster missile does damage to a Tone hugging the shield. This will give you the chance to hover and take a shot.
    2) A 2nd charged shot to the wall will not only break the shield but also do damage to the titan. The 1st kit for Northstar is not required to do this.

    Good advice. I main Ion, so far the best strat I've got for dealing with a Tone 1v1 is either to get way up in their face so you can bypass the particle wall, or to stay as far back as I can and wait out the duration. As usual with Ion it's hard to beat peeking with the laser shot, because hitting crits with it as soon as Tone's shield drops is a great damage option. The big problem with keeping distance I've found is that at range the return fire from the vortex shield is basically worthless. The rockets are slow, and they don't track on the way back, but I've had good success flinging them back into the particle wall. I honestly don't feel like I have as much luck in close because if the enemy is any good, they can just make timing the vortex shield too damn hard and there's no time to react. At long range Tone's barrage is an easy catch, and if you've got double dash and a physical object handy to put between you and the rockets, you can afford to spend your energy on laser shot or splitter rifle, whereas you can't afford to so much up close.

    My favorite thing to do as Northstar (and I don't see a lot of people doing this) is pop one fully charged railgun shot into the wall, then hit it with a cluster missile, and following up with another railgun shot. The first shot brings down the shield (mostly), the cluster missile both blinds Tone and becomes a hazard as the shield falls, and the final shot is to deal some damage to Tone before she can run away elsewhere.

Any ronins are foolish to attack scorch. I feel almost no danger to ronin one on one. Which sucks because ronins my favorite ninja badass. A great way of punishing a tone with their particle wall up as a northstar is to shoot a cluster missle at their partice wall, it might not destroy their particle wall out right but the popcorn explosion hits the tone through the particle wall.

      Truth be told, Tone isn't a difficult titan to work around. Its simply that other players are clueless on how to counter her. Her abilities can be dodged and not with great difficulty either but people dont get, or wont learn, how to.
      Yes statistically she's OP. But half of her OP nature is the ignorance of the enemy.

      It’s not a shame necessarily but you should really consider using a different titan just because of how much fun and satisfaction you get from getting good with a titan that is harder to use such as scorch, ronin, and especially north star. Yes you can get a lot of kills with tons but it is not nearly as fun or satisfactory as getting kills with any of the Titans I just listed. The same goes for weapons the shotgun greanaider and sniper classes are very fun even though they are less practicle than smgs or ars

      KaL Rynzler it is true, there was a guy in the roof of angel city with a devotion. That dude killed everybody in my team while camping with devotion. Devotion takes only 2-3 shots to kill a pilot and has high fire rate. It is basically a g2a5 at long range and a R97 at close range.... fucking respawn nerf this now

    • @Likuzaim
      @Likuzaim 7 лет назад +5

      In my experience, you need to avoid long range engagements and move carefully.
      The Devotion's gimmick is it's firing speed ramps up as it shoots. It takes I think...7 or so bullets before it hits max speed? At max speed, the Devotion shreds you with pin point accuracy. Before that moment, it has a slow firing speed with wild bullet spread.
      At Mid range, you need accuracy. The Devotion takes 4-5 shots before it becomes dangerous and those first shots are PAINFULLY slow and inaccurate. So even if you shoot second, snap to your target and use 3-4 round bursts (I use the Carbine, which works best for me when I burst it). With decent accuracy you should be able to drop them without taking too much damage.
      Get into close range and the Devotion is fucked. You can gun down a Devotion user with a pistol before they can get their fire rate going.
      If they prop themselves up on a roof in Angel City, stay on the streets to avoid their vision. Come up the back side of the building away from the action, and hit their rear flank or side flank. The Devotion has a distinct wind up sound. So even if it's not aimed at you, you'll know when a Devotion is near. Get up on the roof in close quarters and dominate it

    Mental tracking idea regarding "Good luck trying to count the shots from two separate tones" at around 2:30. Just a thought, tell me if this works for anyone.
    Anyhow, to approach this problem first we need to address that voice in your head you're using to read this comment.
    [Read this in the voice of FrothyOmen].
    A lot of people will mentally count in the same way that they read, namely by having a mental narrator "say" the numbers being counted. The problem is that most people can only have one voice at a time, so keeping track of two tones _audibly_ is nearly impossible. Enter the visual method.
    First, a training exercise. [Read this in the voice of Blisk]. So you're playing Titanfall like you normally do, but because YOU don't 'ave a proper gaming mouse, you gotta reach for some inconveniently placed key like the rest of us. In your head, an imaginary mini-map of the keyboard will pop up, showing you where all your fingers are, where the key is, and what you need to do to press it down. You might do this even if you DO have a gaming mouse, but it's easier to imagine with a keyboard. On that note, every time you get shot by a tone I want you to visualize a bullet lodged in your titan's hull. Draw a mental line from that bullet to the place you last saw the titan that fired it, and when that titan has three bullets linked to it just forget everything and know to stay the hell out of its way. If you get shot by a second tone, just imagine more bullets, and more lines. You only gotta keep track of six anyway, not like you're trying to guess where three different pilots are now is it?
    [Blisk is dead. BT.]
    I hope this helps you in your future endeavors. Let me know this small essay was of any assistance to you. Good luck out there pilot.

    Usually to counter Tones I have a buddy grab something like Legion or Tone herself while I grab Ronin. Legion isn't the best choice, but the other person's job is to distract the Tone more or less. They take shots at the Tone, Tone drops shield, and then after a few seconds Ronin comes into play. If you can get around and flank with Ronin's speed it's all the better, but a frontal charge with three dashes, a phase dash past the shield, and an arc wave to stun the Tone and drop the shield is all you need. Dump Lead wall into the Tone's face/back while your buddy hits them from the other side. Based on positioning, timing, and enemy pilot/titan support this usually works fairly well with minimal risk or damage. It takes two, but I find that Tones usually can't handle the tag team.
    P.S. Pray to any gods that will listen that Salvo Core isn't up.

    With Ion, using Vortex Shield to rush the particle wall, then dropping E-smoke once you're through it, winds up being a relatively energy-efficient way to force the Tone out of its comfort zone without taking too much damage.

  • @McGeistly
    @McGeistly 7 лет назад

    Don't JUST run away as NorthStar, 5:03. Use a cluster missile on the shield then tactically retreat. It will force them out of position. because the cluster rounds will shoot over the shield and explode. It will do some damage, and give you an edge if they try to pursue. Then you want to find a corner or cover, and attempt one or two shots on them before their shield comes back up. This depends on if they are pursuing you alone or not, but it can frustrate them when they are only getting small shots off on you and they are taking significant amounts of damage. It is also useful to turn a Tone's particle wall against them, so if you have an extra dash and you know they don't have their salvo core then place a trap on the front side of the shield rush around the side and start pegging them from the back. Most likely they will walk back into the trap and give you an extra second or two of the particle wall protection to use to your advantage.

    I never realized just how ridiculously powerful Tone was. I used to be a Tone user until I heard all of the ruckus, and I decided to stop and use someone else, because hey, it's good to challenge yourself. Now, I mostly use Ion and Scorch. I hardly use Ronin because he's really squishy. Never used Northstar, and I didn't want to use Legion because a lot of people were.
    I'm actually getting used to Ion.
    I suggest that Respawn does this:
    A. Make the Particle Wall just as tall as they are so that Northstars can aim over them when they are hovering.
    B. Splash damage does not count as a partial lock; it just does damage. You have to hit them directly in order to get a partial lock.
    C. LONGER COOLDOWN for the Particle Wall or better yet, cooldown doesn't start until it's previous shield is destroyed.
    D. Weaker Particle wall so that it doesn't take an entire Legion's magazine but MOST of it. (Say, 70%-80%)
    That's all I have to say.

    With the friend we have noticed interesting thing. About shooting tones wall by legion. When legion shoots in the corner of wall or to the wall there are no tone it takes much more ammo, and its not enough drop it. But if you shoot directly to the tone standing behind the wall, the wall is dying much more faster.

  • @ixODonnellxi
    @ixODonnellxi 7 лет назад

    The best Titan to use against tone is an ION with the perk that makes the shield ability to 30% extra damage and an extra dash. As soon as tone fires the rockets use your shield and fire them straight back with increased damage or if the shield is not ready use they extra dash's to get to cover. As soon as the TONE's wall goes down fire a laser shot into the critical spot and also you can continue to fire you splitter rifle if you don't aim down sights with it as it takes away no energy. If you keep doing this, catching rockets with your shield ,laser the easy critical spot and keep that splitter rifle firing you'll have your laser core in no time. Then use that to execute. Works pretty much every time for me.

    +FrothyOmen When showing the Legion counter, you failed to show the damage done by the long-range, power shot version. It hits with the similar intensity of a fully-fully charged, Northstar round (little less damage). Two charged shots will drop an unmodified particle wall, leaving you with 98 rounds to dump into that Tone's face.

  • @oliverelliott914
    @oliverelliott914 7 лет назад

    Northstar has another good counter to particle wall. Shooting a cluster missile at the wall can deal damage to the tone if she's close to the wall as well as taking that wall down faster. As tone in this situation the main option would be to stand further away from your wall giving you less wall coverage and more open to attack from different angles however a smart pilot would just get behind cover and run till you get another particle wall.

    I find that dealing with a good tone often comes down to mind games. Freaking the tone out by using things like locking on with archer and making them waste a sonar pulse or rodeoing and immediately running away can contribute to the player becoming paranoid and either defaulting to a super defensive playstyle or relentlessly chasing you down and ignoring everything else.

  • @sm4986
    @sm4986 7 лет назад

    Tone is top-tier against pilots as well. Sonar + 40mm can be very useful against pilots especially in amped hardpoint, for yourself as well as your team. As an Ion main, the best strategy is to quickly focus on its crit spots with laser shot and hide. If you find yourself in 1v1, use the vortex shield to back off, increase distance and find cover ASAP. Since Ion's attack and defence share resources, its not possible to stand up against Tone wide open. You will face a slow death from the 40mm (assuming you block ALL the rockets) and chances are he will get is core earlier than you do.

    I find Ronin to be a fair counter to a lone tone. Either break the wall with arc wave then dash in and light her up OR (my favourite, but work with more cover and tighter spaces) when she drops the wall run up, phase dash behind her and push her to the other side of the wall and then let her have a taste of her own medicine while she's running away.

    Use the cluster missile on the partical barrier as northstar: forces the tone to walk forward or flee. Allowing you to shoot or reposition.
    Since the bomblets spawn on point of contact. They will pour into the barrier damaging it, so tones that pursue take damage, those that flee you can get some pot shots on for minor damage.
    The enhanced payload kit helps, but viper thrusters are real good now.

    I have actually had a decent amount of success as North Star firing a cluster missile at the wall or on a wall next too it. It normally pushes Tone away from the cover they just created. Especially if you are running the amped cluster missile perk.

    I think it's acknowledged that effective, smart use of other titans can beat Tone. I think what people are frustrated about is that said Tone player does not have to be smart or effective to use their own kit well.
    It's possible that over time, the skill ceiling will climb as people discover tricks, and matches will be dominated by Northstar / Ronin players, leaving Tone in the middle. But, the devs also need to watch out for Tone just being too easy of an advantage for relatively little skill input. The concept is fun to play, so I don't want it to end up badly.

    In a tone vs tone battle I'll usually drop my shield right away so that they have no chance to salvo it down. In my opinion a tone vs tone battle comes down to who can break the others shield first and if you even let one 40 mm shot hit you there's a chance they have the right kit to break yours down with a salvo

    If you use Northstar's rocket on the particle wall it can Blow over the particle wall and do damage to the Tone and blocking its view, I have found this to be a good way to deal with a Tone, or at least slow it down.

  • @TwistnMotley
    @TwistnMotley 7 лет назад

    Mainly a Northstar player, I'm always helping team mates out with the particle walls. When I'm 1v1, I lure the greedy Tone player into a trap of tether mines. They'll then be stuck behind their particle wall, which I'll boost over throwing out a Cluster missle after unleashing a fully charged rail gun shot. I'll have a tether mine loaded again, the now pissed off Tone will continue to chase as I either look for additional Titan help, or, rinse and repeat.
    However, with the new overcore coming in at 30%, I've found myself equipping viper thrusters with my back up battery. I'll have 50% going into my new Titan, so a single Titan skirmish will give me my core, and I'll take out the tone in pursuit on my second encounter. Most times I'll lose MAYBE a bar of health along with the shield I came in with. But using low profile, I normally still have my battery as back up and I'll pop that to get myself to full health again.

    I do think that in a tone v tone situation, it is best to have your shield down second. What normally do instead is If you can get 2 trackers on the enemy tone before he puts up his shield, you can use the sonar dart to prod that last tracker and tear down the enemies shield in a single burst. Or close to it if they have reinforced wall. by then, if he hasn't done the same to you, you have a serious advantage and you haven't taken a barrage to the face already trying to get past his wall

  • @AdrianPerezComposition

    I found Northstar's cluster missile to be great against Tone. if you can hit it at her feet before particle wall then she has to abandon position. if you hit it on particle wall and take down the wall you have a mid air aoe chipping damage away.

  • @CrypticSquid1
    @CrypticSquid1 7 лет назад

    Legion player here. An option I don't see touched on is to not use your gunshield in response to rockets, but in response to the tracker cannon. I've found (from my own brief experiences from the other end of this matchup) that there really isn't much a Tone can do if it can't land the hits it needs for locks in the first place, and by the time your shield wears off you already have a lead in the damage race. Additionally, close range mode doesn't actually seem to have damage drop off at range (the power shot does though), it just has such a wide spread that a lot less rounds hit. Against a big particle wall that's less of a problem, so you can blaze away without concern while you advance. Couple that with a power shot (or two) and all but the best Tones will fold like a bad hand.

    • @FrothyOmen
      @FrothyOmen  7 лет назад

      +CrypticSquid1 you are super easy to be locked on to from splash damage. If gun shield is up, all he has to do is shoot your feet or something very close to you and it doesn't stop locks from happening at all. Definitely trade the gun shield in for blocking the rockets, imo.

    • @CrypticSquid1
      @CrypticSquid1 7 лет назад

      You can crouch to prevent your legs from being exposed, leaving only the sweet spot on the shoulder (usually, depending on angle and harder to hit than it looks). Not always applicable, but useful in a straight shootout where you don't need to advance. Plus, even if they do get a lock you still have the shield up (which prevents them building core by hitting you, incidentally). That one salvo (tops) will be all they're getting if you're doing your job right, and any cute tricks trying to delay the salvo and wait out the shield just buys you more time to tear into them or find a better position to be in when they do fire.
      I can honestly say that unless I get flanked by one (which is bad for any titan matchup) I have little trouble with Tone one on one and can almost always wreck it without much hassle even given an HP disadvantage.
      One other factor is that as a result of its reputation as the 'easiest' titan, most (not all) Tone players just aren't that good. They crumple under pressure when their usual tactics (1, 2, 3 ROCKETS) are rendered ineffective and lack the flexibility to do creative things like splash damage, and many will unwittingly move into bad positions in panic as well. It's absolutely not something to rely on, but if you see it (and you will) you can absolutely capitalise on it.

  • @crabbyjack8757
    @crabbyjack8757 7 лет назад

    My biggest gripe is that the shield's cooldown starts as soon as the shield is placed and not when the shield expires. So with the reinforced wall the wall expires after ~8 secs and the shield is off cooldown after ~14 secs, this leads to about 6 secs of down time in the best scenario for the shield. These numbers may be off with frame rounding and other factors but these are the number i found on my computer. The shield is available too often in my opinion for the amount of effort most of the titans have to put into taking it down, not to mention it can eat a good portion of a core if timed properly. Again this is my opinion on the matter and may not be an issue to other players.

    As North star.
    I fire a fully charged shot from the rail gun. Then cluster missle with tether trap followed by another uncharged rail shot. If it's the unbuffered wall it breaks. cluster missle is perfectly placed and dealing damage and tether trap triggers preventing a panic push or retreat. works best with enhanced payload.

    instead of counting their shots, you can also just reactively dodge/shield when they fire. You have ~0.5 seconds to react, which should be enough. One thing I think needs fixing though, is that there seems to be no audio at all for enemies to hear when your tone fires a salvo. You can only see it, but not hear it. Just add loud-ish audio for enemies to hear when your tone fires a salvo.

    One way to deal with Tone when you're not in a Titan, is to cut off her vision. That's her primary way of dealing damage, is if she sees her target before she has a lock. As a pilot, you can toss an arc grenade, rodeo, get out of there, then toss another arc grenade, and repeat the process.

    Take Scorch's Inferno Shield kit, march straight through the wall, and watch Tone run for the hills. There is NOTHING scarier than a super aggressive Scorch with an extended Inferno Shield. Even Ronin can't belt out that much damage at close range. I take the Inferno Shield and the Turbo Engine so I can dash and stay in their face when they try to retreat. It works almost every time.

All you got to do is fire your rifle in normal mode so you deal a bit of damage and count the amount of shots tone has landed on you, after the third you can count on him using his rockets so immediately pull out the vortex shield. Once you doom him you can easily kill him by using the shoulder mounted laser. Ta-da

    I've been playing a lot of tone and honestly, one of the best ways to counter a tone is rush her with your defensive ability when she puts her wall down, unless youre tone but especially as scorch, as that's her only way of defense and she isn't the best at close range. ronin can do pretty well against a tone, and her rockets damage her at close range, so if a tone rockets at close range, don't use a defensive ability, it will help you in he long run, unless you're legion as the rockets will still damage her.

    TONE IS MY NEMESIS! I'm at G7 with Tone and no matter how many times I watch these tutorials or play "her" I suck ass, but whenever I encounter a Tone enemy, I start getting demolished no matter what class I use by myself. %35 of the time I can handle that class by my self depending on that person's skill level with that class. But however, my chances on defeating Tone by myself, start turning out to become less and less of an option, since most players who play Tone, stick with TONE, meaning more Tone players skill level starts getting higher and higher! I will try and continue to play with Tone from time to time and learn from these tutorials. But my chances of me getting gud with Tone, aren't getting any higher from the position I am in with "her".

    I think counting rockets is a bit unnecessary. Some tones may change up when they fire or use their other abilities to gain locks to make themselves difficult to predict. It's pretty easy to see tone's rocket pod thing pop up (it's the one on her right shoulder) and a quick reaction - dodge or defensive ability - can negate most if not all damage. Getting tone to waste just her rockets will reduce her dps drastically. The 40mm cannon is probably the weakest primary Titan weapon per shot

    If your a pilot using A-Wall and the Devotion. Just burn the Tone's Particle Wall down with your Devotion to help your team. Then switch to a charge hack Charge Rifle and plink away at Tone. Whenever I play multiple Tone players or very stationary Titan teams, I just break out this loadout. They either have to come out of position to flank your A-Wall (while taking damage from your team hopefully) or they have to respect your damage/position and run away.

    From a basically Ronin-only Player:
    I don't know how different the meta is on PC, but I honestly don't struggle with most Tone players when I play my main (Ronin). I find that most are very static Phalanx-like players that are EXCELLENT at lane control (and Tone does dominate all other Titans in this regard). Most Tone players I find myself up against panic when you Flank or Phase Dash, often firing whatever lock they have haphazardly, or desperately trying to get a lock on me. If you play Ronin, you know you must never let that happen (or you die. Fast.) . That said, careful planning of your reloads and when to close the gap with your sword. A skilled Tone player will definitely be a match for you, even when you jump them.
    I don't know if it's because Ronin is not a popular choice in competitive TF2, but I like it when people don't plan for me. Gets me a healthy score.
    What I really struggle with are skilled Ion pilots (and skilled Northstars, post-update!). I think that's because I am an aggressive player - I love getting in peoples faces - and a good Northstar can throw off my mojo.
    The best thing about Tone is that each of it's kits are very valid choices, and all alter the core way a Tone player...plays. This makes Tone harder to predict, something which cannot be said of most other Titans in TF2 Multiplayer.
    My personal opinion, I don't think Tone is in any way Overpowered, it's just easier to master a variety of different playstyles on the current map rotation. It's interesting to see that Tone doesn't perform as well on Angel City, a map that is not built around the 3-lane principle. I hope we see more classic maps (and more fresh ones!) and can see what happens to the meta overall. Interesting stuff.
