  • SKETCHENDEAVOUR! In this episode Andrew Tischler draws a mountain scene using a variety of pencil techniques. Starting with the initial thumbnail process in the sketchbook, he moves on to a larger drawing to work out the idea and then progresses to a final rendering establishing all of the tones and textures.

Watching you draw I see where I've failed in the past. And, that's simply I tend to rush through my drawings. Where as you take your time and the drawing slowly emerges as you go along. A valuable lesson!

This is a wonderful example of the control of contrast. This has added to my understanding of how to deal with distance, water, surfaces such as rock and grass. Inspiring and instructive.
I live in the mountains about 20 miles due east of Seattle, Washington, USA, a once sleepy timber and fishing town that became the gateway to the Alaska gold rush and later the home of the Boeing Company. It's pretty quiet now and most of the roads and freeways are empty.

each sketchendevour is so stimulating, I can not wait to pick up my pencils, I also draw every thing, before my sculptures or paintings. I want the composition or gesture to sing to me before I move on.. It saves due overs and waste of materials.

Thanks Andrew! You are one of 3 artists I follow. Paul Taggart from Scotland, Chuck Black from the US, and you. Your style is refreshing and I love how you don't get stuck in a single 'rut' and just keep doing the same thing over and over. You color 'astuteness' is wonderful. I've learned a TON about mixing colors and tonal ranges from you. I'll be ordering some tutorials and giving a few to my grandson who has now started to follow you as well! Hope all is well with you and Rachel and I'd love to find a way to get to the Southern Island and see your studio.

Hi Andrew and Rachel, great message in your video. Artistic advice and life advice in this crazy time we are all facing. I truly believe that the connection that we are able to share with the internet will help us all and art as a creative past time or profession is a welcome relief from the doom and gloom of the news. Perhaps this could elevate the status of the artist in the public eye if we continue to show content like your videos. Well done. Keep being creative to help everyone stay safe.
    Best wishes from Scotland,

In case anyone is interested, what I have found really useful for my drawing practice, I use a 24x36 magnetic board as my drawing surface. I have attached it to a desktop using a piano hinge, so you can adjust the angle. The great thing about it is if you are using individual sheets of paper, it can be held onto the board with small round magnets you can get anywhere, even a dollar store. I then use a piece of thin acrylic or Duralar to rest my hand on. I glue a small round magnet to it so it doesn't slide around on the drawing. It is easy to move, you can see through it so you can always see the whole drawing and it is an excellent shield, even for use to erase up to. If you have printed out a reference photo, it is great to put up on the drawing board, also with the magnets. It is also great to tape your paper as well, very easy to remove.

Hello Sir. I've been drawing about 9 months now and I'm so jealous of your discipline. I have ADHD and I'm like a Jack Russell on crack 😂. The VA started me on medicine for it finally and it's really helping and allowing me to focus and be able to sit long enough to draw more than just a line. I'm a Disabled Veteran and all I have is time so I thought what better way to pass my time and not just stare at the walls. I went to the Art Store and got a little carried away 😂. I'm the type of person that if I'm gonna do something it's not gonna be crappy if you know what I mean? I talk allot sorry. I just wanted you to know I've been watching your videos the whole time and I've learned so much from you. I wish I had your patience but I'm getting there. I just want you to know how much you have helped me with my drawing and my progress. Thank you for your videos. I also got some new black paper to try to draw on also. Maybe one day I'll be half as good as you Sir. Thanks Again!!!

First, I like the thumbnail idea, it allows for more than one interpretation of a single viewpoint. Once again the man from down under, the down under, is changing the way my art exists.
Let me share an example. . . this morning, as I do regularly, I study YT and other sites for valuable content that will help to achieve my goal. You have a sketch of Mt. Talbert, which I don't so I do get up and go to Botcher Baldwin Arboretum, Spring, TX. What do I find? The monarch caterpillars are getting ready to pupate, so all the garden is filled with black & yellow caterpillars munching on thier favorite plants.
I took a couple of other interesting pics and now I've some live study stuff to draw, Thanks, Andrew.
