- Ruth, 90 years old, has lived in the same flat in East Jerusalem since she came to the country in 1940 with her parents, brother and grandmother. They took all their furniture from Berlin with them, even the porcelain dishes. When Ruth lived in New York, she was friends with one daughter of the famous German writer Thomas Mann.
Mahmud is a 15 year-old school dropout who lives in camp Shuafat, surrounded by the wall on three sides. He used to fly kites and if they landed on the other side, use passages under the wall to get them back. Once he almost got caught by security guards. Mahmud makes his own kite, assisted by one of his 12 siblings.
US-photographer Jim has witnessed many conflicts and wars, in Somalia and Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo. Since 2003 he's been head photographer for EPA (European Press Agency) in Israel and Palestine. He likes to cover human stories and the few "light moments" of the on-going conflict.
David was born in Vienna, Austria. He fled the Third Reich when he was 15 years old. His mother died in a concentration camp, his father survived in the UK. He sold his first photo when he was 19 years old and later became one of the best-known photographers in Israel. Although retired, he always takes his camera with him in case something sensational happens.

She actually indicated they got out of Europe before the holocaust proper started (though maybe that was not mentioned till a later video in this series), but Jews were still being persecuted even then. They actually arrived in Israel in 1940.

Terrible noise and disturbing music. You'd think that the music director was not very intelligent. Very irritating.
It was irritating at first to me and I got used to it.
It sounds like tribal drums...each culture has similar 🎶 music. It fits this series. I didn't like it at first either.
This is a good episode, two photographers - one an escapee of the 3rd Reich and the other European. Both award-winning. I hope we see the older gentleman's photos, who is interviewed in the coffee shop.
Thank you, this is so informative. Just this week Amnesty International declared Israel is violating the civil rights of the Palestinians (crimes against humanity) with their abuses. I watched the report on Democracy Now on utube.
It is shocking, as the news ususually portrays it the other way around.
