After seeing this video I contacted Jay to discuss doing the reverse of this swap. He was very helpful and kind enough to ship me an insert from a 300 XC-W. I installed the XC-W head onto my 2023 Husqvarna TX 300. I didn't have to do any other modifications to the cylinder or the insert, it fit right in. My bike already had a 9 ounce Steahly flywheel weight on it. I didn't remove it for this test. My plug is an NGK BR7EIX (Iridium). Compression dropped form 221 psi to 191 psi. I didn't measure squish but that info was already included in this. I only ran it on the white map. I didn't feel like I needed the green. The lower compression head insert did exactly what I was hoping. It reduce the spiciness that the bike had in stock form. I've ridden it a few times now now and it has performed flawlessly. These rides were at my regular spot with cool temps in the 40°F to 60°F range with an elevation around 500 ft asl. The terrain is fairly challenging and all of the trails are tight single track. We do have some jeep trails so I opened it and it ran good through the entire rev range. Without the extra hit I was able to climb nasty rooted and rutted hills much easier than before. I didn't fight the bike as much to maintain traction. Keep in mind that I'm a bigger guy at 270 lbs naked so I require a little extra power to just pull me around. I don't feel like I need any more than it has right now. I also did some hard enduro sections full of rocks. This is where it really shined. I was able to get traction without spinning up. It made those sections much more enjoyable and I used less energy. Two of my ridding buddies have 2024 300 XC-W and a 2024 TE 300. I felt like those bikes were too soft especially on the white map. This new head combined with the heavier flywheel weight placed my bike in a very nice middle ground between XC-W green map and XC white map. On faster trails and maybe more open style harescramble racing I might choose to use the green map. The bike felt to be running a bit richer than ideal but it didn't load up like an older carb bike would. I assume the richness was due to the lower compression head with a deeper squish band. Also there was more splooge on the silencer. Probably from the combustion cycle not being as clean or complete. I imagine a tuner would help but I'm pretty happy right now and I'd rather not spend the money on something that I may not really need. It's a bit strange. You never hear about people wanting to go down in power from stock but here I am. This was a perfect mod for me. Thank you Jay for your help and for providing the insert.
5/16'" socket or nut driver will work on those hose clamps. Back in the day a company made a 1/4" and 5/16" nut driver called the SlideDriver because it had a sleeve that would slide up and change the size. They had a stubby driver that allowed you to take the nut driver out and use it in a 1/4" impact. Now a few companies like Milwaukee, Malco and Klein took the idea. Klein makes a stubby driver that is identical, but the nut driver doesn't come out. The other companies just made bits that work in an impact driver. 1/4" and 5/16" are common sizes for appliances including HVAC. I have worked as a maintenance technician for apartments for over 10 years. Those bits make repairs faster since I can use an impact plus I have less tools to carry or lose.
Hey Jay the port timing is different on xc and xcw. Cylinders aren’t identical. One of the reasons xc has more power but xcw has better lug. This bike mod sounds like a good middle ground.
Guys, I love this video! I just picked up my 2024 KTM XC-W and to me it has plenty of power but I guess why not! Also, I printed out the manual double-sided and have it in a notebook in my garage so I referred to it all the time with index tabs for things like torque specs, etc. Question: why would KTM put that step in the dome to prevent you from swapping it out easily? I’m just curious. Also it looks like you have an FMF Shorty silencer on the bike. I would think the preference would be to go for the longer turbine core so you don’t lose low, end, torque and power. I’m just curious why you made that decision. Thank you!
I do that also. I’m old school. I miss the days of hard paper shop manuals. I still order them when available for any bikes I own. To be honest I think every bike/machine sold should just come standard with a paper back service manual. But manufacturers really don’t like guys working on there stuff anymore.
I like that the manuals are online, but I still have to have my paper copy handy. This because its no fun having to carry my desktop or laptop pc back and forth to the garage lol.
Jay, Were you able to get a red or green sticker on the 2024? I want one but I’m scared to buy one with coming changes to sticker program in CA. I have a 2020 right now so I’m locked in luckily
Leaving the stock map In the white position of the handlebar switch really gives the best of both worlds. When you want to get some hit the green button 🤘🏻
I'm guessing you mean after your special tune is involved, correct? Not by using the new head and a stock tune...but rather using your tune along with the new head and using the map switch.
Yes the true magic of this motorcycle is how it can be ridden in greasy and terrible conditions. We chose to respect the best parts of the stock motorcycle in the white map and build a fun more mx style map in the green map option
@@twisteddevelopmentracing Got it! I'll check out your information, I hear tons of great stuff about you guys. Thanks so much for the information. You're describing exactly how these bikes should be set up, white map for regular trail ride and gnarly hard enduro stuff and green map for long gnarly straight hills and other great times that deserve WOT!
Did you do change your XC? I had the same question. I have a 2023 Husqvarna TX300 (same ax XC). I've already installed a 9oz flywheel weight but would like to soften it a little more. I was curious how the XC-W head would perform with the stock TE / XC ECU and map. I've ridden a few XC-W, and I feel like they have too soft of a hit even on the green map, but the XC is a little too hot when riding technical or hard-enduro type terrain. All of the aftermarket products heads, tuners, etc. tend to focus on more power. I don't need more power. Thanks
Just found out KTM is owned by Baja 300 Austrian technicians laid off what the heck is going on? We are told by actual KTM technician they would not touch a KTM anymore with your 10-ft pole KTMs 300 are blowing cylinders off or 2024 Husqvarna was leaking oil so bad out of the shift seal they replaced it twice now. Is this true? Please tell what you know about this
I want to know how you’re trail riding a ‘24 Two Stroke in California and planning to build another for yourself? I’ve been wanting to add a modern 300 to my garage but if I can’t get a plate or a sticker, I’m hosed in Cali.
The xc and xcw cylinders are different, not to mention the ECU differences. More compression means more heat, without ecu changes sounds like a great way to blow up your XCW.
The most common answer will be that you don't want the rear suspension linkage. Other than that, some people, for a variety of reasons, will start off with an XC-W and then eventually want more performance.
As someone with a tx300 I think now I would have gone te300 and done the dome. So I could easily have the power for a light off the bat and the heavier flywheel for the extra lug. It would’ve been closer to the 450 I came off.
Greatest bike ever made and Jay just made it better!

XC has link suspension also, so really all he's doing is increasing the hp.
You guys kill it !!! Such good info keep it up please good day sir
Nothing like hearing the sound of a 2 stroke when it's under a load and letting it eat!!! 👍
Good info!! Think the XC/SX have different cly with diff porting then the XCW's aswell.
A lot of great info! Super cool how the bike came out.

Another great video! Cool option to make a great bike even better!
The head is different but the cylinder heights are different … this gives the sxf the revs and top end power
Rad Vest Jay. Who makes that? I have a question for the podcast. Should I email that in? Thanks!
Yes email is best and he always responds pretty quickly.

Nice! Especially since it has my racing number on it!
It would be interesting to see one set up for 208 octane leaded C12 race gas.
This fuel can handle way higher compression and adds huge power.
Jay,

Most get an out of state plate...
It’s a good idea to get a Twin Air fuel tank sock filter so no dirt hets in the tank.

What's the contact info for Tom Morgan to cut the step into the dome?
name of the trails at the end? Im from AZ but want to come visit
What do you think about doing the opposite? I’d like to take a 300xc and make it less spicy.
Great ideas. Email Jay directly for tips.

Instead of XC head I would go to Kesley at RK tech and get him to make me a pump gas compatable head.

Why wouldnt you just buy an XC

Xc doesn't have stator
Because these are the types of guys who just can’t leave things alone, more power does not mean you’ll be faster in the woods
