Great to see such an epic bands first foray into the music world. As expected, beautiful harmonys, fast switch ups and wonderful guitars lead the way.

A top favourite of mine for many decades. This is their first-ever song. Bloody amazing, right? Try Astral Traveller for more of this lineup ❤
Totally love the first 2 albums more than a lot of what came later - you won’t regret a deep dive from here onwards. It’s a good way to get to Close to the Edge and so on in a natural way.
Tony Kaye (on keyboards here) later played with David Bowie on the Station to Station tour 😊

Old school. Thank you for reaction. With Yes, and may get in trouble, but stop after Magnification. 😊 Tony Kaye on organ, Peter Banks guitar here. Phat bass..😂
Definitely the pieces already. Just differently refined at this point. A life changing journey sir. Some tracks you will want time to listen to alone, without thinking people staring at ya. Lol

Kudos for starting from the beginning and seeing how they develop. That form of study also shows how they become truly "progressive" once they did "The Yes Album" (their third record), finally writing all their own material and hiring Steve Howe on guitar. Then, when Rick Wakeman (keyboards) took over for their fourth album ("Fragile"), the cast was set and the possibilities unlimited. In the space of just three years from "Beyond and Before" they became one of the biggest bands in the world. Cheers.

Never heard this. Oh yeah, SO 60’s! 😁. You can tell it is, it but hard to pinpoint why. Part of it is production values I think. Guitars sound different

Yeah, I think a lot of the reason is the technology of that time - the recording and reproduction equipment and the instruments.

Why not start at the beginning? Like you said, you'll be able to see their PROGression. A great way to find out about Yes.
I read a quote from a British music critic many years ago. I don't remember his name or what organization he wrote for. In a 1969 year end retrospective, he wrote something like this: "Of all the bands that released debut albums this year, these are the two who I think will make it big . . . Led Zeppelin and Yes".

    @roygaiot8105 Месяц назад +1

I think that you'll find more of a progressive development of Yes' music thru the years, where as Zeppelin, as you mentioned, started strong and pretty much maintained the same style and energy right up to Presence, with not too much change. Yes had more of a learning curve, starting simpler then constantly transforming (The Yes Album was their first real statement) and mastering more complex compositions up till Relayer. Then Going for the One saw them take it down a notch, and then it kind of all fell apart after that. Drama was instrumentally interesting but without Anderson's vocals it doesn't cut it as a Yes album. 90125 is a pop album, a good one, but it's just pop -- same with Big Generator to a lesser degree. Don't bother with anything the follows, it's just derivative.

Ok...I never really gave the first two albums a "go". I had Yesterdays on vinyl, it pick some tracks from each of the first 2 albums.
Do yourself a favor, don't bother with Genesis' first one, its a stinker...and anyone says its not is fooling themself. Trespass is were it really starts.
This song was not on Yesterdays. I can hear why. I'll just leave it at that. US Roadie 1 signing off!

Each decade of Genesis was very unique and uncomparable. The first Genesis album will be a disappointment if you expect Genesis 70's from it. If you instead expect some early Bee Gees sounds you might be satisfied. There are lovely songs on it but it's not progressive rock. The first Genesis album may be a stinker for most Genesis fans but it might be a treasure for Barry Manilow fans for example. But fans of Barry Manilow and Bee Gees will likely not check out that album because they probably don't like Genesis. So it will remain a hidden treasure for them.
I think the song Time Table from the 1972 Genesis album Foxtrot has a bit of resemblance to the sound they started on their first album. If they had re-recorded and produced their first album again for example in 1972 then I think the song Time Table would have blended in nicely on it.
The song Anyway from 1974 was originally a 1970 song named Frustration, but however the original also sounds like progressive rock. Lilywhite Lilith from 1974 was also originally an older song from 1971 named The Light that got re-worked.
The BBC live songs Shepherd, Pacidy and Let Us Now Make Love from 1970 give a sense of the transition between the first Genesis album and their 1970 Trespass album. There were several songs that got completely lost from that period too which Tony Banks mentions in the first Archive box set.
The song Visions Of Angels from the 1970 Trespass album was originally intended for their first Genesis album. Anthony Phillips says in an interview that he was first very sad it didn't make their first album but very happy in hindsight that it instead appeared on Trespass because it would have sounded very different on their first album. I don't know if there exist any audio of their first version.
I am very familiar with the first Genesis album and enjoy it very much. But it is like a world of its own. I think the song In Hiding is a very sweet song. But it's a far cry from cool progressive rock. The song that Tony Banks was most satisfied with in hindsight was In The Wilderness. I think Fireside Song is a very sweet song as well. But then I don't have any problems with sweet songs anyway.
My problem comes with the 90's. The two last Genesis albums are not for me. I did buy and enjoy the Genesis album We Can't Dance from 1991 but it did not stand the test of time for me. Their final album I didn't even buy because I don't resonate with it at all and never have.

You should hear Mabel Greer's Toyshop's version...same guys but a rawer sound. This version has better production. Peter Banks was FANTASTIC! Set the standard for progressive guitar.

An insipid melody, not helped by some clunky lyrics and the clumsy way the song is structured. But the band spare no effort in trying to make it a memorable opening track, and generally they succeed. With a couple of exceptions - this being one of them - Yes managed to produce a debut album full of exciting and interesting songs. I think you're in for a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I don't think of the structure as clumsy. To me it seems like it's their style of changing things up frequently throughout a song that is already showing through in their first song. I think of how it seems like that's just the kind of music that Chris Squire and Jon Anderson wanted to make when they first got together to have a band. After hearing and reading Jon's and Chris' comments in interviews and writings, I believe the music demonstrates just what they were after.
