Thank you for this comparison. I really appreciate it. And by the way, your channel is the first channel I have ever subscribed to on RUclips. Seriously... you make an impact, I hope you know.
I was a Sonlighter for 15 years. Until I stumbled onto your channel. Your enthusiasm for TG&TB LA made me take a look at it. I was so happy with Sonlight, I didn’t ever think to look elsewhere. Well, my oldest (18) is atheist, and I had already started to look for something different for the rest of his high school. We switched to Build Your Library. My Christian daughter is now using TG&TB for LA, and we will be starting science soon. I’m looking forward to digging in to the history after my son graduates. That said, I agree with you in that RUclipsrs are not influencers. You are my favorite channel and this is the reason why. You present what is working for you and your family without telling anyone else what to do. THAT makes me want to try some of the things you are doing. Next thing to tackle is my house. It looks like chaos, while my body is 89 pounds lighter and much more “organized.” I’ve got my homeschool organized, but it’s time to redecorate. I’ve recently started working, so we should be able to afford that soon. You have unknowingly helped me so much on my personal journey. Thanks for being you, Ashlee. ❤️
I also love TGATB and have switched over for language arts. However I still find Sonlights reader choices superior in most cases, not to mention the variety I see in Sonlight. What I love TGATB the most is how it teaches writing and spelling! We have stuck with sonlights readers for the most part. We did sonlight for our first 7 years and always wished for something better when it came to teaching writing and grammar! Found it in TGATB! :)
Karina B I agree that the language arts curriculum for TGATB is much better. The readers and history curriculum for Sonlight is a much stronger curriculum.
Yes!!! I feel the same TGAB is a better language program but Sonlight still has it in the history department. Thankfully, we are able to use both this year.
@@GraceandGrit yes! I have 4 in 5 years, and it has been too difficult to do 1 core with them all. My oldest will likely return to sonlight history for grade 8.
Good to hear how you found it. We very quickly stopped Sonlight as it just wasn't a good fit for my son, he enjoys TGTB so I just gotta go with mommy instinct and do TGTB.
Your hair looks great parted that way!! I’m spoiled, we stared TGTB right off the bat, so we don’t have anything to compare to besides my RUclips binging on everyone’s channels.
We have done Sonlight and TGAB and I totally agree. I still look at Sonlight for book recommendations for read alouds. I like their book choices over TGAB.
I'm using SOTW this year for History as I found TGTB to have too much American content (I'm Canadian). However, I added in read alouds and independent readers from TGTB's list as well as Sonlights and Book Sharks lists. I really do love the extra literature! We are loving TGTB LA and science courses though.
Thank you so much for this video. I appreciate your videos so much for being so informative. I am homeschooling in South Africa and my reason for looking for something else is the curriculum is a tad problematic and I have seen since we started homeschooling how it dwarfs the child's mind. It is not challenging nor does it encourage critical thinking, it's a ''take what you're told/given'' approach, well I made that definition up for lack of a better way to describe it. I detest how it's made my child less confident in her ideas because she is worried that ''it's not how it is'' or she's wrong. Also the anxiety that it brings because of the worry that she needs to cram the work so she can pass her tests and exams, I LOATHE IT SO MUCH! I AM OVER IT! Anyway, I have since started doing my research and now I am looking into the good and the beautiful. I want her to enjoy learning again. Our curriculum encourages competition through cramming to pass at the top without actually learning anything I just can't with it anymore. I'm definitely going with TGANDTB I have already checked the samples and took the assessments. For this year since I have already bought the SA curriculum and don't want to confuse her, our Math is good so I will stick to that one, drop the Afrikaans and the rest add TGATB. I love the language arts etc. Thanks Ashlee
It sounds like Sonlight is good to set the foundation for the younger years K-3...to establish a love for reading (like you did?) and then switch...what are your thoughts?
I completely agree. TGAB language arts is not comparable to anything else on the market in both quality and price. We are not currently using the history but I am considering it with my youngest in a few years. We are currently using Beautiful Feet Books. It’s a lot of reading a loud for me but I think kids are grasping historical context way better from living literature than text books.
We have used beautiful feet books last year and are now using TGTB history, and honestly, I miss the living books approach so much! We just finished unit 1 from history 1 TGTB and I’ve been doing some research to possibly change our history. I’m looking into heart of Dakota right now. If you and your kids enjoy the literature based approach to history, my advice is to think twice before you change it (like we did!:(
I have a First Grader and Kindergartener.. I am using Sunlight for History/Bible/Literature and TGATB for LA and Math.. I have always been so curious/excited to use Beautiful Feet books for History! What age do you think is appropriate to incorporate that?
Tiffany Crain I have used the early American pack (for k-3) with my kindergartner and 4th grader last year. They both enjoyed the books selection so much! Some more than others, but for the most part, we loved them. That is the perfect pack to start at younger ages, I believe. Or the pack “around the world with picture books”
On another thought, if you are enjoying sonlight, you might want to stick with it, since it’s also literature based. However, I have no experience with sonlight, so I can’t compare the two
Thank you so much for the LA and history comparison. What are your thoughts/reflections for their respective math and science programs? Cheers and keep up the great content!
Thank you for making this review. We are using TGAB this year for LA, typing, and nature study, all have been wonderful. We are continuing using Sonlight for our read alouds and history I just love Sonlight books so much. The beauty of homeschool is you get to do what works for your family. I am so glad you found that for your family, you seem truly happy about school this year.
I actually never heard of Sonlight! I am doing TGATB History this year, love it. Might have to switch to LA next year! We're doing mostly Abeka for LA right now, having come from Christian Light. We'll see!! ☺
We are using the good and the beautiful for math and LA this year but I brought in Abeka science and Sonlight history cause that was all the cheapest I could find when I needed it. & I hated history growing up I failed a lot. Great in like math and science but history eww. Lol. Until I found Sonlight history and I absolutely love it. Honestly one of my favorite subjects. This is only my first year homeschooling and I’ve learned so much alongside my daughter. ❤️ I love the good and the beautiful also cause it’s fun for my daughter to do. And open and go. Also mostly free since paper and ink aren’t exactly free but to give it away no charge is amazing!
For people with older children, Sonlight separates history and literature for high school. We used Sonlight for American History and 20th Century history and both were strong courses that prepared my kids for college level courses. I am using TGATB history for my younger children this year and considered using it for my freshman. I found it to be way too light in comparison to Sonlight and several other curriculums at the high school level.
I am glad to find this video because I was just considering to switch from Sonlight to the TGTB. I just finished using Language Arts 3 from Sonlight with my daughter, but after doing the placement tests for the TGTB curriculum, I found that she has not learned the grammar for the level 3, although she can read proficiently. Would you recommend to start with level 3 of TGTB still?
Cynthia DeWeese I paid $78 (includes the board game), so I would sell for $65. There are downloads that I can print and send you because you’ll need those too :) Just DM me if you’re interested! Nothing has been written in!
I was very disappointed with the history and science from TGAB. I loved the LA so I went all in and got everything for this year. TGAB seems very easy. I think it comes down to the explorers. They are almost exactly the same for all 4 levels. I cant really see my daughter doing the same worksheets 4 times. Shes 10 and already kind of disappointed in the difficulty. Same with science. I think I need to add to it to make it work. For the price, I didn't really want to have to really add so much to it. Ill still use it most likely going forward because I don't like anything else any better. Ill probably add notebooking to the lessons.
If you didn’t have to juggle so many cores with Sonlight would you prefer Songlight over TGATB? Obviously not with LA, but maybe other subjects? I’m considering switching Lang. Arts as I don’t love it with Songlight or next year.
We switched to TGATB for History from Sonlight and I am having to suppliment TGATB with other things because I feel that we aren't learning enough from TGATB in this subject. I didn't have to do that with Sonlight. I wish there was a middle between the two for History.
@@GraceandGrit Thanks! Hmm I can't seem to find that one on the web. I found one called clear pond. Do you happen to know if river pond is still available?
I think TGTB will be coming out with a high school history if they haven't already. The current history year one (I think--but don't have high schoolers) would be too easy for them maybe?? (We use TGTB for all subjects for our 5th, 4th and 2nd grader and so far I love it :)
For me it's the price. it's like 400++$ for Sonlight compared to free TGATB. However both my kids didn't like TGATB. I wanted them too!! Trust me I tried. I bet girls would appreciate the beauty of this curriculum more? I dunno maybe I'm wrong, but my boys were not into it. My youngest would get so angry when I would ask how does this picture make you feel? LOL He just wanted to get school done not embrace the beauty. We got Sonlight second hand this year so more affordable. After a look through I think this is more their style. We'll see. Luckily we have options. :)

Great video! Do you feel the same about Science? Whenever I think about switching from Sonlight I look at the SL readers and the good and the beautiful readers and think...the same book all year...doesn't that get boring? That's like my only hold out. :)
I agree with you completely. We have stayed with the sonlight book choices in addition to TGATB. Not every single one however, depending on which child, as that could end up being a lot of reading. If you are OK with tailoring both to suit your family, I would encourage you to use sonlights booklist alongside TGATB, of course not expecting to read all... But if your student loves reading, go for it!
I'm glad you said this. My son is a reluctant reader and we tried a program that came with one reader and he was miserable! Everyone is different though.
