@@BookWyrmOnAStringShe might not be able to fully control her hearing, because she most likely would be tuning everything down to a tolerable level and only tuning in on important things. But we see she's not doing that for loud events, that are ultimately predicable, to come.
Yeah, she was low-key trying to indirectly tell everyone Bruno was still around, because any time she tried to DIRECTLY tell everyone that, she probably got slapped with a 'We don't talk about Bruno!'. So she kept just dropping vague hints about it hoping somebody would pick up on it... which they never did. She has probably been doing that since Bruno 'left'.

I realized that with her hearing being that powerful, and hearing Luisa's eye twitching, she may have also been able to hear her other things going on, like the 'making' of all the younger siblings. Nothing quite scars someone like hearing their parents in their room.
It's not just that but in the scene where she tells Mirabelle that she can hear him, Bruno was actually in the backround Walking right behind her! Which means Dolores was not lying that she could hear his foot steps!
When Mirabel is knocking on the doors at the beginning of Family Madrigal she gently nudges Dolores' door with her hip rather than knocking on it. (And straight up bursts into Isabela's room.)
i like to think the reason Dolores had such a hard time keeping Bruno's vision a secret (and eventually spilling the beans) was because not only is she bad at keeping secrets, but she also had to keep the fact that Bruno was in the walls somewhat a secret. So knowing such a thing, that could make or break her family, she was nervous every time Bruno was brought up, because she thought she might slip.
This kind of shows she’s really the strongest, mentally, for not being driven bonkers since getting her gift. She didn’t need to ask how babies are made… how old are they when they get their gifts??
Wether she was intended to be on the spectrum or not, it’s really really nice to see representation of people with sensitive hearing or who get overstimulated easily. I was so happy when i noticed these details in the movie
She had been mentioning she knew Bruno was there the whole time. She's the main reason why the family is so dead set against anyone talking about Bruno. She had been trying to tell them she heard him around since the beginning, but nobody would listen to her, so she stopped talking about it. It's also part of the reason she's whispering in her song, because she's happy someone is finally willing to listen, but she's afraid of the backlash if anyone else hears her talking about it. She mentions him earlier too, but she does it in a round about way by talking about the rats and not him.
I love these little details. I have a sound sensitivity and get panic attacks with loud sudden noises like fireworks. I never see anything like this represented.
As a kid I always had sensitive hearing that would hurt, so this is actually really sweet. But she is still rude for never saying he was still there lol
As someone with Sensory Processing Disorder I really felt for Dolores, and I can't imagine how it must've felt for the world to go basically silent when they lost their powers, only for it all to come crashing back at once. Yes! Also, Dolores does not speak much bc of how sensitive her hearing is, and when she speaks, she always speaks quietly. Even her own voice bothers her! Also only during Dolores part in, "Bruno," are there whooshing sounds associated with quick movement giving us an idea of how something normally inaudible to everyone else sounds to her.
You know an argument could be made that every one of the family's powers were specifically made to be a double edged sword in some way. Perfectly shown in this where she can hear better but it's also a lot more sensitive.
She must have been so scared when she got her gift. Imagine having normal hearing and then suddenly large bangs go off and everyone is clapping extremely loudly.
I also noticed that she's the only one who seems genuinely happy when their powers break. She's finally able to be loud and sing and be part of her family as their rebuilding the house. You can see the absolute dread on her face as the powers come back. I hope if we ever get a second movie of Encanto, Dolores has figured out some way to change what her power is. Although messages to younger people is always accept yourself, love yourself, etc. If anything it would be some way of being able to deal with her gift, and accept it, learning to love it, rather than change it. Based on disneys standard
Although her hypersensitive hearing is a super power and not really natural, it’s validating seeing a character like this since I’m hypersensitive to loud noises too and other sensory inputs.
