Even if it's a little bit sappy, I don't think it ruins the film at all. The filmmakers earned every inch of emotional impact the story had, and giving one last payoff for an uplifting and ultimately happy ending hits just the right balance. Even without this scene it'd be something you should show your kids, but with this last moment we get something that will stick with people.
Yes, in real life the noble sacrifice won't come back from the grave, but just this once, we're overjoyed to see our good friend give us one last smile as if to say "Don't worry, it'll all be okay."

While it's more tragic and poetic perhaps to have IG actually have died in the sacrifice, I think that some people are being a bit cynical when they suggest it ruins the film.
Yes, humans love a tragedy and actual deaths hit harder. But IG surviving doesn't detract from its beautiful character arc. It still believed it was going to die and decided to make the sacrifice play for the ones it loves.
I still get emotional watching its sacrifice. I never got emotional because I was sad that it would die, but because of the sheer emotional power of this innocent, gentle, naive giant stepping up to save the humans it loves from an annihilation they let loose on themselves while trying to destroy it out of hate. The soul of a child sacrificing itself out of love and to be like the hero it is inspired by.
It's the act, not the result. Iron Giant will always be Superman to me.

There's a perfect quote from the Ninth Doctor to sum this up. "Just this once, Everybody lives." Yes, so many times, that sacrifice is a cost and loss is the price. But not always. Sometimes, if someone does the right thing, is willing to put themselves on the line, everyone gets a happy ever after. Is it always the case, no. But the hope that it can happen is what inspires us to those sacrifices. And if anyone deserves a day where everyone lives, it was the Iron Giant.

OMG MAN....... a beautiful sad ending that made you cry followed by a hopeful and happy ending that made you cry. WHAT A MOVIE!
And no I do not think it's a good idea to make a sequel. Sometimes what makes movies so special is that the story is told and an ends and that's it.
No sequels to take away the shine from the original movie and destroy the franchise. This movie had an opening, an ending, and everything else can be interpreted. I think there's even more details in the book. Let's start to make new stories like this one instead of just rehashing for Nostalgia sake.

The fact that Hogarth new that the Giant would return someday makes me think that if they ever did a sequel for this film i think it would be interesting if it took place like 20+ years after the events of the first film and it's revealed that Hogarth spent a lot of life trying to track down the giants whereabouts i'm talking he would have an apartment chock full of newspaper articles and clippings talking about sightings of the giant and Hogarth would have one of those bulletin boards filled with photos and a trail of red yarn on it...at least that's how i would've liked for it to be, but it's a good idea for fan theory.

The way I see it now as an adult, this is a message to every child who lost a loved one.
Hogarth had got used to the idea that he would never see his best friend again, and although he still missed him, he had tried to mourn his death and carried on with his life, unable to fully move on.
And then, this final scene with the bolt sends the message that despite all, the Giant continues to be "alive" somewhere (the glacier being an allegory of "heaven"), and this hope helps to complete the process of mourn. Hogarth knows that he is still unlikely to ever see his friend again, but knowing that he remains somwehre is enough to bring him the comfort he needed. Letting the bolt go is also a strong metaphor of letting his last emotional attachments go, now he can move on at last.
It sends a message to the children that when they lose a friend, relative or even a pet, he/she/it will always remain "alive" in a very distant place and they need not to worry and let their grief go. Especially with the closing scene of the Giant's head smiling, as if he was saying "don't worry for me kids, everything will be ok".
It's very beautiful and poetic. If I ever have children, I will make sure they watch this film.

A lot of people wonder why or how The Iron Giant could have survived the intense heat and blast of a thermonuclear weapon. Fusion weapon is basically a miniature star... hotter than the surface of the Sun. It doesn't matter how advanced The Iron Giant is. Whatever metal alloy he's made out of what is still been incinerated by the Heat so the only way he could have survived is if the giant has an automatic energy field to protect himself similar to the one the aliens used in the Independence Day films. We've already seen that he has a defense mechanism so it makes sense that it's possible that the blast could have been detected and an energy Shield could have instantly been turned on protecting his body

if that’s true, how could it be that the body is protected yet still split apart? maybe there’s also a mechanism/program for the body to be allowed to separate at the joints with exposure to significant force. similar to how a car frame is designed to crumple to an extent on impact during a collision, the pieces could be made “vulnerable” to get blown apart (whilst protected from the heat) past a certain threshold so as to not rupture, warp, or disintegrate during a powerful blast wave whilst protected with the mechanism you think of. the pieces get thrown about and then track each other once they stop moving relative to the planet’s surface. or something. interesting to think about.

@@-8l-924 I believe the force field protected his body from the explosion but couldn't keep it intact so the force from the blast, scattered all his parts all over the place.

Don’t forget. He is not from our world so despite what his name says, he may not actually be made of iron. But rather a metal containing minerals which are unknown to us that could withstand such a blast.

I think if there was ever a sequel, they should set it during the mid-stage of the Vietnam War, Hogarth is a teenager/young adult who's big into the new hippie counter-culture and by extension the Giant would be as well. The plot could revolve around the US Government's efforts to draft the Giant into the war to try and turn it in their favour, but the Giant continually refuses them because of his rigid policy of non-violence leading to yet more conflict with them.

You have to admit this was a nice animation. But the ending if you really think about it is rather scary. IG survived a head on atomic blast and it merely scattered the pieces which start to reassemble. Hence there is no way to destroy him. And if there are others out there without the purpose/memory loss well.... watch the stars lol.

One of the best endings ever! I can’t believe people think this belittles the sacrifice he made… I’ve never thought that. He crashed into that bomb thinking that would be it for him! The fact he survived in the end only enhances the film. Without that ending it wouldn’t have been as good, the way it ending was uplifting and gave you happy tears.
