@commando7144 Jan studied for 5 years at the Amsterdam Lyceum and his original classical training came before his emergence wih Brainbox and Focus. He played the Lute at the famous Rainbow show and this was some years before this encounter with Paco. So yes, he could have played an acoustic here, but the fact that he did something completely different makes it that much more interesting
Paco did have astonishing technique. He could make his thumb on his right hand move with such speed that I don't understand how he humanly did it. There are other videos online that are enjoyable collaborations, like Jan and Philip Catherine in late 1974. Again, Jan was venturing into Philip's territory with a jazz theme of his own making.
Jan meant that a 'pickpocket' has fast, clever and skilled hands/fingers to do his work. But that even hands like that cant compete with Paco . Yes Jan has classical training and studied for I think 5 years at the Amsterdam Music Lyceum.
for me jan is better my opinion but thats a different style as jan says he doesnt want to play like him (yes he says that) cause everyone got his own thing so does jan love the 2 of them together though:d
Yes, Jan could have said why did Paco not strap on a gibson and compliment jans playing? Paco was not stupid he exposed himself to the jazz players BUt never ventured to do that himself, Jan was brave to go and play on Paco's terms, Jan was trying to fit in with what Paco was doing....not the other way around!
This isnt "Paco's thing" either, he pretty much invented this way of playing rumba, what Jan can't solo over Fsharp phyrgian with no key changes? Please, nothing complex with what Paco is doing, if he really wanted to confuse Jan, he could have left him with two logs in his pants.
I would have love to see the look on Paco's face if he wasn't the one leading the dance here. I think he wouldn't be able to follow Jan Akkerman. And indeed, if Paco went off to play bulerias or something, Akkerman would have a hard time going along with that. Jan Akkerman seems to have a false sense of modesty about his own level.
Makes me realise what a blessing it is to be able to appreciate and enjoy different styles of music; like Rick Beato. Thank you!
Tx for that - Ever since i posted this clip people have been misinterpreting it. Jan has huge respect for Paco
When akkerman was asked if he wanted to play like paco he said no that's what paco is for. That answer was priceless.

the guitarist who was pronounced best in the world in 1973 by melody maker i thought
I think Akkerman did a great job.
Quote: "Die gast heeft zich gek zitten friemelen op dat ding".

Paco was gezegend dat hij Jan mocht ontmoeten, zo moet je het zien.
i absolutely hate the interviewer here... he's asking all the wrong questions.

@KryzMasta Dat zegt iets over jou.. geloof me..!
