Martha Raye steals the As the Stomach Turns sketch. As good and funny as Betty Grable and Carol Burnett are in the sketch, it’s Martha that makes it hilarious.
For many years as I was watching my all time favorite #1 show I then found out the talent Bob Mackie. He designed 50 outfits for each show x how many weeks x 11 years that was over 10,000!
@franskalp1663 amazing isn't it. Only one week to learn & practice for an episode. They actually do that episode of the week. They do it before the first studio audience, then they rape the show with the 2nd studio audience
It is wonderful to see two legends on stage at the same time. At her age, Betty could still move, and she was the right age for Dolly. Martha is amazing. Good show.
No matter how many times I watch these, I still laugh after all these years. I was honored & blessed to see Her Live on stage & She was so charming, graceful & we can feel the warmth when She came on Stage.. She answered questions & She still sounds good with Her Tarzan yell
Betty & Martha are excellent here with Carol especially and love the little extra looks & jesters they all acted uppon. This is one if not the funniest "As The Stomach Turns" episodes! I can't stop laughing at almost every line of script, YES I was "sitting down..." too, but stood to applaud, BRAVO Indeed!! Wish today's TV shows had even 1/2 the pure clean professional comedy Carol provided back then!! Cheers!!
I agree. This episode seems like a special one. Every phrase is something :) I guess it was such a perfect combination of talented people and great humor.
As they said in the description, this was the first "ATST." Wasn't it a case of this originally intended to be a one-shot, but audience reaction led to it being a continuing, recurring series of sketches on the show?
Thanks for sharing an uncut original episode as I remember them from childhood. It's not the same without the weekly musical numbers. It was a variety show, after all...
I never realized that "As The Stomach Turns" was supposed to be a one-off that developed into a semi-regular skit that (thankfully!) lasted through all 11 seasons.
Like finding 1968 in a time capsule. Love the bright colors that the women wore. I haven't watched the other episodes from this season but it seems that the show was appealing to an older demographic. The best parts of the careers of Martha Raye and Betty Grable were over 20 years earlier.
I loved Martha Raye, and actually still do. I wish i was born back when she was young and acting; I would've been a loyal fan. Martha was absolutely adorable! So under-appreciated. ❤
Whoever the cartoonist that created that opening cartoon of Carol Burnett, the one where she exits with the bucket on her head deserves a lot of credit. He really captures Carol Burnett's nuances with exquisite humor. I marvel at that. There is no indication on Wikipedia of who that cartoonist is.
I'm curious to know why it never shows Carol walking onto the stage at the beginning. It always begins with her standing there with the audience already applauding.
The audience Q&A is already wasted time; having her enter and acknowledge applause would only add to that. I don't care how many people like the Q&A; more times than not, it's tedious, repetitive ("How do I get into show business?"), unfunny and goes nowhere. Please don't tell me, "Well, what about the time..." I said more times than not.
@@julieerin115 I've always gone my own way about these things. Even as a young teen when Carol's show began, I thought the Q&A was filler, almost always unfunny.
We need more people like Raye. Politically, Raye was conservative, affirming her political views by informing an interviewer in 1984, "I believe in the constitution, strength in national defense, limited government, individual freedom, and personal responsibility. They reinforce the resolve the United States is the greatest country in the world and we can all be eternally grateful to our founding fathers for the beautiful legacy they left us
Carol,as our lovely 🇬🇧 Q.E.ll 🇬🇧 : Great job, and very funny, but may I just point out that that huge ( heavy!) crown is seldom actually worn .😊. For the State Opening of Parliament, yes, but usually , for formal occasions, there is a gorgeous range of tiaras to choose from. .... 😊🇬🇧💕🇬🇧😊
If at all possible, could you please post the full episodes of Season 2 Episode 5 and Season 2 Episode 27? Those are the episodes where Edie Adams was a guest star, and I've been trying to find them, but EVERY version of those episodes that I've been able to find only shows half of the episode and is missing all the parts with Edie. I really want to see her sketches and songs because I'm a HUGE fan of Edie Adams, and I love the Carol Burnett Show so much, and I want to see what kinds of things Carol and Edie did together when she was on the show. If you could somehow find those episodes, that would be so incredible! Thank you!
In Carrol's early shows she had some great stars, in the last few yrs it was all Tim Conway, who wasn't that good and who was constantly upstaging Carol and Harvey.
@5:34 There’s this guy.. I don’t think he was doing alright! He either had a headache or .. upset because he Had to attend with somebody. My goodness.. he didn’t look happy for being there AT ALL!! Maybe the show usually started late that people had to wait for like more than 45 minutes until all were there and ready to open the curtains! Gotta watch him again… oh, you poor thing!! 😅
Martha Raye and Betty Grable are the same age, both from 1916. Garble died 5 years later though, in 1973. And Raye in 1994. You'd think Grable looks healthier en fitter in 1968.... but nothing less far from the truth ....
The Carol Burnett show did not age well ! Most of the comedy is cheap ! I grew up watching it and when I watch it now most of it is poor ! Two and a half men or Seinfeld are miles better ! Let’s be honest !
@@randysills4418 Sanford and Son is still great ! I can still enjoy some of the Carol Burnett show but it is not top quality. When they show it on Mets don’t forget they deleted the worst half of the show !
Raye steals every scene she’s in without even trying, it seems, but is also a generous scene partner.
She was wonderful. ❤
Bob Mackey was a magician with dressing and costumes
The credits mentioned Vidal Sassoon.
@@sheristewart3940 Vidal is only credited for creating the wigs that Carol used.

Martha Raye - what a pro.

I love it when Martha & Carol are talking & the organ continues playing
And then she had to shout at the organist to stop playing! It was annoyingly loud. lol!
Martha Raye was one of the best.
Yes !! I always admire her amazing talent and comedy ! 💕💕💕

What a great show. Brings back memories of good, fun, clean entertainment. Those were the days.
I saw this tonight on TV and searched for it here due to Martha Raye's brilliant performance! Love it when she exclaims "Gasp!"
I have seen this episode numerous times because of the always entertaining Martha Raye and that great "As the Stomach Turns" sketch.

I agree about this episode of As The Stomach Turns
These were truly wonderful times for television variety shows, sitcoms.😍✨
This episode's As the Stomach Turns is my very favorite, and the fact that Betty Grable couldn't keep a straight face cracks me up the most, LOL!! :-)

Always excited for a Martha Raye episode! 😁🥰
True and so also Miss Betty Grable
Ahhh the Million Dollar legs , the Wartime fav pin-up girl , the Fabulous Betty Grable some 30 years later in this show ! Real stars .
As The Stomach Turns is one of my favorite skits ever.
I ❤❤ Martha Raye she's a hoot
Uncle Burt was played by William Schallert. I didn't recognize him, had to look him up.
I love to watch. Carol Burnett. She's the best
CBS-TV first aired this episode (S1:E22) :
Monday, February 12th, 1968 at 10 pm (EST).
...and people are still watching it 54 years later.
I love watching the episodes of Alice w/Martha Raye the best

I don’t like her. She over acts and I find her embarrassing. Not funny at all. Just weird.

Betty was about 50 when this aired. She looked great. Unfortunately, she died six years later of lung cancer.
I was at Disneyland the day after she died and her ex-husband Harry James was playing the trumpet there that day...
Regarding Betty Grable… as my Grandma used to say, the legs are always the LAST thing to go on a lady.
@@SurLaMer_ Not many things on TV shock me any more, but that scene sure did. My mouth dropped wide open.
Not necessarily true. I'm personally a victim of spider veins. :( Fortunately, my abs are still somewhat decent.
I never saw what was so special about her legs tbh.
Martha was a great singer!
Betty Grable sang a selection from "Hello, Dolly."
