High End Munich 2023 Day One Coverage

- Опубликовано: 13 окт 2024
- Day one started with a 7 AM breakfast meeting with Mark Döhmann and his team to catch up and discuss turntable news-his and what had been announced we'd see at the show. Was worth getting up early for. The only show appointments/events I had on my schedule was a panel discussion with engineering great Jim Anderson and his wife and "Tonemeister" partner Ulrike Schwarz, this time not about his work with Patricia Barber. Instead the discussion was about analog versus digital and i was there as a participant not as a moderator.
At High End, these panels are often not well attended because everyone is busy doing business, especially on press days one and two, but we had pretty much a full house and the discussion was lively, informative and a great deal of fun. i think it might have been recorded.
Though analog coverage is the main focus, among the most amazing items I saw and heard was the Alieno 250D LTD MK2-a push pull 300B tube amp (not a hybrid) with a claimed output of hundreds of watts per channel! You'll see that in the video. Enjoy!

Awesome coverage Michael. You covered a LOT of ground and gave a taste of a lot of products. High quality close ups with very little movement You've had a lot of practice! THANK YOU!
Wonderful coverage Michael. Many thanks.
In regards to the Okki Nokki segment, hey, at least you owned up to it. I gave a very hearty chuckle at that.
Absolutely fantastic machine's! Glad to see no problems with copyright!
I'd like a Tuna sandwich from the Automat! LMAO.
Me too !
Okki Nokki girl was the highlight of the whole video.
no, lovely Jozefina L. with her EAT tables...then the Dutch lass.
Both beautiful women.
Did MoFi have a table with a DSD player, allowing the "vinyl analogs" to gaze upon the *digital* masters from which their tupperware platters were pressed?
Do you have any information about US distribution for Origin Live?
I would also appreciate any reviews of Origin Live equipment.
Thanks
'Get out of the way ! It's Michael F%@king Fremer !!!!' Okki Nokki- 'Are you into vinyl?' - Well I own the company'. Pathos - 'someone else is covering that subject'...... Oh Mikey. You are a legend.
Another highlight: 21:10 "You've aged terribly in one year..." 🤣
Thanks, your expertise is awesome, video’s to. More turntables please.
Thanks former WBCN dj-That Thorens turntable was out of control!
Thank You Micheal keep up the great reviews and info mate cheers. 😉👍
Thank's for this interesting and nice Beitrag 👍
If only I was ever able to afford to go to this show it would be a trip of a lifetime. Also if I could borrow a couple of million dollars so that I could build my dream system then that would be worth an amazing amount of enjoyment to experience.
Would it really? Personally I would feel bad about my own system. These shows are designed to make you want to buy more.

@@Fluterra Ding ding ding ! Capitalism !!!
28:40 "Too much to take in" then a pretty woman comes along and he's all ears.🤣🤣🤣🤣
56:33 Beautiful Pathos extruded heatsinks, nice touch, not cheap.
Men normally like pretty women.
No Michael she’s very beautiful and you’re not gonna get killed you’re just being real. We all need to dial down a bit, when something happens real it’s not sexist… oh yes, thank you for your effort.
MF assumed that because she's young woman, she must be "someone hired to do this". That's pretty much the definition of sexist. If the person sitting there was a 60 year old man, he wouldn't have made the same assumption.
May the Thorens where tested at the front of Ucrain? Nice tour! Thanks!
Does anybody have an idea why Project Audio is making tons of apparently equal turntables (I'm pretty sure most 9f them are equal actually) ! It doesn't seem to make any sense to me.
Very nice. But where are the zero tracking error solutions? Only 2 as I can see. Plenty of fabulously engineered turntables and arms; but none of them focused on eliminating that source distortion which lives forever throughout the audio chain.
Jozefina always finds you and walks you through their products, Michael.
Michael's charm is magnetic !
Re: Okki Nokki - You can take the boy out of New Jersey, but you can't take the New Jersey out of the boy.
For next year please have a dedicated microphone for the person you interview. Or ask for the music to be muted during the interview.
I was confused by the Okki Nokki interview at the end. Johan Bezem, who designed and introduced the Okki Nokki I had heard recently, passed away. Was that person, a family member continuing the business, or is it under new ownership? I was as confused as you, Michael, when she explained that she was not just somebody there to demonstrate the product but that it was, in fact, her company.
I believe it's the daughter of Johan who is now continuing the company.
@@fairvsfree ok, thank-you.
Hi Karl, I understand that you were confused. I am indeed Johan's daughter. My father has worked hard for several years to develop such a beautiful, affordable record cleaning machine and I have proudly taken over the company! Greetings Sanne Bezem
@@sanne_bezem Hi Sanne, thank you for your reply-my condolences for losing your father. I have been a fan of the Okki Nokki machine since I first discovered it, and I am happy to hear that Okki Nokki will continue in your hands. I have owned an Okki Nokki machine since 2015, which continues to serve me well. The new machine looks fantastic. Cheers, Karl.
@@GiancarloBenzina I was just curious as to the current ownership of the company after the founder's death. I was hoping that she was a family member carrying on the legacy of the product. It is, in fact, the founder's daughter, as she kindly explained in response to this post. There is no judgment, and there is nothing wrong with curiosity. Have a great day.
Hello Michael, many thanks for your work, very much appreciated !
What a *NOISY AUDIENCE, everywhere in the listening rooms ! - why couldn't all those people go outside in order to SPEAK, instead of listening?! Or at least whispering instead of speaking loud. I wish I had a teleporter, instantly came in Munich, and shouted to all those noisy people QUIET PLEASE !!!* These are great products, whose setup required huge efforts made by passionate people; they do not deserve such a messy and irrespectful environment.
This pisses me off so badly that I managed to make the Brussels hifi show nearly silent in comparison (by ranting² to the organizer, who, finally, listened to me...).
[please forgive my poor English]
I hate that too, but please consider that this is not a big listening comparison test, but a show event to present the stuff. A famous British HIFI reviewer once said to me, that he will never (really) listen at a Hifi show.
Fremer doesn’t seem to like the Luxman table. You can tell when he doesn’t like something 😂
That's simply not true! I'v'e covered it in numerous videos you can watch. That's all!
I foresee Fremer unloading his OMA TT soon… the tension between him and Weiss was palpable
Huh?
I have no interest in vinyl playback, but I enjoy the videos for the sarcastic remarks:)
Ah... Okki Nokki segment: Fremer is such a DOM ... and I vicariously live through him ! Well done !!!
Hi Michael,
As to the “crabbing effect”, mentioned during the CSport turntable segment, it’s my understanding that cutting lathes use a worm gear to advance the arm.
Would it not make sense to use the same type of mechanism on a record playback arm?
P.S. the B&O 4000 used a metal worm gear for it’s tangential arm.
The mass difference makes a worm drive less useful
When you're cutting a record, the lathe defines the spacing between the grooves. When you're playing it back,, the stylus has no way to know the spacing between the grooves, so the arm needs to be driven by the stylus position.
Nothing like a beautiful woman to talk about turntables. 8 turntables, please.
@Abe FromanHow old are you? 12?
Jozefina is so elegant!
@@petekutheis3822 With a charming personality too.
@@artyfhartie2269 This is an important part of "beautiful".
Michael, you sure have an eye for the financially unobtainable.
Isn't a four box phono pre amp a little too much? Over the top maybe.
Nice to see Joachim Gerhard still designing.. His DIY projects are impressive (phono stages and loudspeakers) published online for free..
Come on! Please interview lovely Maria from Zavalinka tapes. She is there! Oh she should come to a US show!!
Show me the 1 miljion dollar mono blocks please..I need new ones before the end of the weekend.
Enjoyed the coverage Michael as I do for all of your audio shows coverage. Does anyone know who the vocalist was in the Stratosphere Mk2 Turntable and Mk3 arm room starting at 6:32?
I'n not sure but it sure sounded like Grace Slick to me, hope that helps.
It was Grace Jones. The album 'Nightclubbing.' The title track, a cover of Iggy Pop's song from 'The Idiot,' album.
@@Fontsman That's funny, I just realized as I was waking up this morning I meant Jones. You beat me to my correction, good catch.
@@Fontsman Thanks!
Jozefina! Her voice but let us see that lovely woman! 31;50 ahhh there she is 😍🤩
Oh boy.... whatever it takes to SELL SELL SELL !!! Her turntables are beautiful....
They never know what anything costs! If you’re coming to a show coming to a show at least have prices to hand and know what the things are actually called.
How much does it cost, errrr, why cares right?! What’s the stylus profile, errrr? Is it elliptical, is it conical?, it can’t be for $15k, oh no it's line contact.
I think the last honest nugget of their brain is temporarily shortcircuiting their ability to speak.
I guess if you have to ask for the price, you can not afford it ! Hope Fremer covers turntables for us mortals…. (Sub $5K !!! )
@@ptg01 Oh so true.
I'll bet a lot of those manufacturers are making 1,000,000% profit on some of their gear. Selling stuff as if transistors cost $5,000 each, resistors cost $2,000 each and diodes cost $3,000 each. LOL.
Parts cost is not a legitimate way to gauge value or actual. costs….
@@trackingangle929 I understand Mr. Fremer. Turntables require amazing machining and creative designs. I totally get super high prices on some of them and their isolation platforms. Where I have a problem is with super expensive amps. I have done lots of DIY amps myself over the years.. Class A, Class A/B from low 5wpc to as high as 500wpc. Amps (Power Amps, not Integrated which are somewhat complicated) are not all that complicated. And the tricks used to make them "Faster" and more musical are well known and don't add much to the cost of the build. But hey, if people want to pay that for them, let people make them for them and charge what they want. We are a Capitalistic society and some take full advantage of that.
Good to see you out and about at the shows again. Love your channel and reviews! Great work.
Respectfully,
Brian
These guys aren't making the kinda of money you think. Parts cost are just a small fraction of the cost of running a business. how about rent, labor, insurance, taxes, initial capital investment & let's not forget about marketing...Oh yes, what about intellectual property rights. If we applied your measure then everyone would be wearing Patek Philippe's smoking Cuban's & driving Ferrari's.
Many of these European high end manufacturers does sell maybe 15-20-30 peices of every individual product where an american manufacturer maybe sell 1000-2000-3000.
The sheer depth of high end anologue gear now available is mind boggling. I remember when record stores pushed CD & would only sell vinyl under the counter, how times have changed. Long live the 'new' old medium!
30:40 purple also color of royalty! 😊
Anybody knows what’s the music at 8:50 ? The estelon system
Why don't we have a High End here in Berlin which after all is the Capitol of Germany but NOT when it comes to things like this. There is not even a nice Jazz Festival here in Berlin.
48:02 Parting the sea for Mike
Led by Suchy himself....
75K euros for a pre-amp!?
Kinda surprised that CS Port (fabulous 'tables and phono stages) was an unfamiliar name to MF.
In all honesty, I'm a pretty experience turntable guy & wasn't familiar with them either...Definitely look forward to checking them out.
OKKI NOKKI ... you met the boss , nice smiling dutch girl with a nice product at a nice price. Respect.
EAT makes some of the best looking turntables and electronics out there and are priced a bit more "reasonably" ....
Of course she has to make the tables beautiful to match her persona. Now her hubby's Project stuff---well it is merely "ok". Ditched a Debut Carbon for an EAT C Sharp!
@@petekutheis3822 I've always wondered how Pro-Ject's higher end stuff compares to EAT's mid priced line...
It's good we've got the professional review at Munich not just vloggers seem to just go round recording and saying nothing lol
never got an answer to my question I need Michael I'm Gathering you didn't see it? I want to know what the overhang is for 10 and a half inch arm I need to draw the Arc, and do you recommend any null points for that size arm.
The girl from Holden you didn't manage to get her number did you can I help it lol
Michael's getting very frustrated I've been waiting weeks to get answered to this dilemma I thought you would no the answer! Of the overhang for 10.5 inches arm, I remember they used to be a website where it would give you the overhang for every length of arm possible but I can't find this website maybe it's not around anymore, do you know of it can you give me a link thanks! anybody know the answer to my question?
The Okki Nokki segment deserves its own video...as apology for the condescension towards that lovely young Dutch Industrialist. Heavily edited or re-filmed. That would be good manners.
She was fine with it…
I'd like to take some of the best of the best of antique, then vintage tt's and compare them to what they are offering today and see how the sound sonicly next to each other - do an 'a' and 'b' blind comparison, then do a comparison with just the tt's but use the same tonearms and cartridges so see how differently they sound and maybe compare how far or not how far technology has come in 150 years.
Why dont all theese people spent time and money on propper presentation. The sit down The Dark lab for two years. Spend a year to make it and send someone who dont have idea about how to communicate. Even on camera. Wow they are hopeless!!
Most of these things are ridiculous guy’s.
Ah the old Okki Nokki Blues! Poor Mikey, but a good try!
hey man they are only loud. dht phonostage is the ultimate.
Don't be too hard on yourself Michael, I thought the very same about the very pretty Okki Nikki girl...Us sexist have to stick together!

OMA room sounds Terrible. Are we going to blame “the room”?? 😂
Look what you did to yourself and didn't take a heart
No, I'm going to blame RUclips audio and your laptop's speakers.

I love audio, and appreciate the high end stuff......but after a while who cares?
Theres such a huge miss appropriation of wealth in the world and I hear guys poo pooing "cheapo" $1000 speaker cables.
I can’t understand anyone but you.
Hey that million dollar China system sounds killer killer hot on my phone speaker the other stuff sounds like crap! More China system More million dollars China system
I enjoyed your video as usual but to many ugly turntables.
Hahaha niiiiice .
2nd upthumb is mine .
At least 3 times the lady near the end of the video starts talking only to be interrupted. A bit rude.
oh come on he was tryin hard to flirt with her. She is such a lovely Dutch lass after all!
@@petekutheis3822 That's Michael being Michael... trying to recover with a foot in his mouth ! HA3 ! All in good fun...
In comparison to the R300 demo of this track there is a night and day difference. The R300 sounds flat and boring compared to the R8. The R8 sounds live and exciting right from the start of the track. I am a bit biased as I own the R8 and never heard the R300 in real life. The R300 sounded very smooth but a bit too smooth for my taste. I listen to the R8 with el34 tubes in triode mode and it still sounds exciting. I appreciate the effort you have taken in posting the demos. They are high quality recordings and are very useful for hearing comparisons between the components.
Hard pass on the ESD stuff.
1000wpc 300b? Plonker it used 300b to drive kt170 rookie!!
DSD is KING. SACD is queen. CD is prince or princess. Vinyl is just old expensive overrated crap, for religious fanatics.
I suppose you are a meat eater who goes to vegetarian websites to jerk off. Correct? Vinyl still sounds best.
SACD? Do they still make those??
@@trackingangle929 Yes I'm a meat eater. That's why I don't like the frying sound coming from vinyl. My wife takes good care of me, so no need for me to be alone and shake my hand. I'm not like you, a lonely vegetarian and vinyl lover.
@@gotham61 Yes they do. And lot's of older recordings sounding so crisp, clear and sweet.
