i agree about the contrast between the treatment of the guns vs the bodies, but i think the dancing wasn't really about dancing to pass trauma, but notice how everybody dancing are the ones that stay alive throughout the video, and when he stops dancing he's chased away. i think it's supposed to show that everyone's just doing what everyone else is doing ("dancing along") and when you stop or speak out, you're targetted
I am not from the US and maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but I think the reason why the guns are wrapped in red fabric with so much care is, that after shootings at schools or churches, there are loud voices calling for the weapons law to be tightened, but in the end it won't be touched. Maybe in this context the color red stands also for the red in the logo of the NRA (or their Red Flag Law).

Marco Venturi It does, but that doesn't mean it's right. Guns have become a symbol of freedom, and this gets glorified over even the safety of kids... As someone in the U.K. where shootings are a rarity and kids aren't scared in schools, and police aren't killed even close to as often, it's staggering to see people who continue to make the argument that stricter gun laws wouldn't make people safer. American culture puts gun rights over everyone's safety.

Kids in uniform represent the rich, they handle his gun and drags the body away, dances while everyone’s in chaos, chills while looking down from the stairs. Kids who aren’t in uniform (poor) are running and fighting on the lower floor.
Also in SA the white man and his police in the apartheid era shot school children when they protested against the apartheid regime, thats why we have Youth Day. We wear school uniforms similar to that, and the way they're dance is the way we dance over here... 🤷🏽♂️

Unfortunately they rush through that part in ya history. I assume you’re a person of color so while that is your way of life and you know had to be sat down and explained all this the white privilege we’re just able to go about their day so they don’t know or it go lost in certain generatio be especially if non racist families but still lives on in racist families and is still talked about in the families of people of color because it was that important. I self educate every day on many topics because school even college isn’t in depth enough.

My teachers are currently going through the civil rights movement (not the 1960s one, the one that predates even WWI). I suspect the reason why its skipped over is because the education in America (from what I've heard) is shit.

I just want people to understand that lives matter, not that guns matter.
Just gotta mention, i was fully Oblivious to the message when i first saw it.. maybe cuz where i live(Finland) we have like no gun related crimes or stuff happening.. but that doesnt really matter, when i watched it few times more, and also watched few videos like this one, My eyes kinda opened.
PS. I dont think it was Black on Black crime related, it was overall related to that exact thing that in America, people give human a very low "price tag" while weapons are "needed" everywhere(they are not.).

Who is Jim Crowe and what happened with him. I don't know about this because I'm French. Can someone explain me please?
1) You caught on with the bag over the head theory. In the guitarist's happiness, you see him, unbothered, enjoying himself. Then when he's murdered, you don't SEE him (his face, nor his happiness). Black people are going about their day, but are met with unexpected death by gun violence. You see another guitarist playing toward the end, a representation of the cycle of the mass murder of black men in America continuing. "Same shit, different day" sorta thing.
2) Gambino's movements and attire mimic those of minstrel shows during the Jim Crow era.
3) The guns are handled with care, wrapped in a red cloth (representative of the red states' obsession with protecting gun laws no matter the cost). Black bodies, however, are dragged away or just left there.
4) The shooting of the choir represented the Charleston Shooting by terrorist Dylan Roof.
5) He says a line, "This a celly. This a tool." Black people are now shedding light on the horrors they experience with police brutality via cell phone. But this line could also have another meaning. "Celly" = jail cell. 'Tool" = prison industrial complex. Mass incarceration of men of color. Minor offenses with outrageous sentences. The warehouse they're in does look like a prison.
5b) Person commits suicide jumping from top tier, probably a tragic nod to Kalief Browder (look him up.) or mental and physical abuse inmates undergo from other inmates and correction officers that drive them to suicide.
6) Masked man on a pale horse rides in right by a police car, signifying death. These days, black people in America feel like once they're approached by an officer, they're gonna meet their doom.
7) Notice that each time he shoots someone, the chaos in the background continues. But when he pulls out what is PERCEIVED to be a gun, everyone runs off, a woman screams in the background and the music stops. A nod to the unarmed black men murdered by police. In general, people seemed threatened by the existence of black people, even if they're unarmed (hence the scream you hear. Only time it's heard in the song, despite ALL the chaos in the background).
7b) The music at this point stops for 17 seconds (a tragic nod to the 17 who died in the Parkland shooting).
8) He pulls out a joint and is "awakened." Dances on old cars. The cars are a nod to all the riots and protests (Rodney King, Baltimore Riots, etc). But can also represent the lack of progression in America as far as racism and white supremacy are concern. SZA makes a cameo sitting on one of the cars. Her hair resembles the crown on the Statue of Liberty.
9) The camera moves up (from the "sunken place" to him running from people: a nod to the movie Get Out). He's awake, is running toward a light, but can't seem to get there. The chase seems to signify that this shit doesn't seem like it's gonna stop. Blacks in America seem like they're being hunted. That's what I felt in this scene.
All in all, Childish Gambino wasn't representative of a particular group of people when he murdered those people in the video. He embodied the state of America in those moments. We just become so desensitized to constant news of gun violence . And have become distracted by media, celebrity culture, stupid trends, material possessions and vanity when crazy shit is going on in America.

Everyone ignores the actual shootings but runs away when he makes his hands into the shape of a gun at the end. This is a reference to the fact that in America today, few things are treated as scarier than an unarmed black man.

The pants he's wearing are confederate soldier pants. His dancing is like the kind of dances used to make fun of blacks back in the day. Notice how the background after each s shooting shows a lot of attention to the guns and carelessness to the body. The bag over the head is like being prepared to die but also that it could be anyone. The media tends to use black people on tv to keep the black community fearful and radicalized through portrayal of police brutality as a black problem and also perpetuating the idea that black people are faultless in crimes because society thinks all black people are the same and can't help themselves. Kids on phones being how disconnected the youth is, they're on the second floor showing they think they're safe from the dangers of unprotected streets.

I’m a resident of the Minneapolis SW Metro community. Only 20 miles from me was the tragic death of George Floyd and the protesting & rioting that ensued afterwards. The singing choir was the Charleston Dylan Roof church shooting, the black men are blindfolded because it makes them almost nobody. Also, the bags resemble the kinds of gunny sacks put over black men's faces when they were lynched. The cars are referencing the fact that black man buys expensive cars and pointless stuff, for show, that become old and worthless when they have cash. The brief moment when he has silence and smokes is a symbolism for the drugs taken to forget all that happened and is happening in the craziness of America. Every time someone was shot the gun was reverently escorted away on the red flag. Whilst the black people that were murdered were just dragged off like garbage. Everything is a distraction for the madness in America. At the end the terror of the black man running from the patrol/slave-catcher/Paddy rollers/police means they have money and status and yet because of your skin complexion and hair they still are just like that slave running in terror knowing he can be killed any time.. I know I’m extremely late, but I feel like part of Glover’s genius is that he leaves the interpretation of his lyrics and video open to the viewer. This particular song means millions of things to millions of people… I took the meaning as a scathing statement on what America “stands for” and how when even the most horrendous acts take place, as long as they don’t directly impact the “core population”, they are easily brushed aside or blamed on the “others”. The majority of us were raised (well, indoctrinated) to believe that America is #1. That we’re a benevolent nation who keeps things above board and sets the example for the rest of the world. However, of late we have seen glimpses of the truth. America is a fucking trash can where profits over people is the motto and only the 1% see the America we were told exists for everyone. The double standard applied to the 99% is appalling to say the least! We routinely watch celebrities get probation for charges that you or I would spend decades behind bars for. You nailed the message of the video in the first minute when you said "there's all this stuff going on in the background but you just focus on the dancing." That's America- all this stuff is going on but they're distracting us with the entertainment. Way to go man.
What's interesting is that they mention that there is "crime and violence" happening in the background. And while those in the background collectively seem to have the energy of an unruly mob, if you actually watch, nothing violent is actually happening. Some are running around with symbols of mob violence in their hands like baseball bats and police batons, but no one is actually using them. Some climb on cars, but they don't bash the cars in or anything. It could just as easily be a party. There's a little girl just riding around on her bike.
While the musician with a hood over his head becomes faceless in the foreground, and is gunned down, those in the background are just as faceless because we don't pay attention to them. We just see them on the periphery and assume they are up to no good, they're probably committing a bunch of black on black crime and violence. Sprinkle in a couple of cops cars with flashing lights and cops with batons and surely we must have a riot on our hands. But if you watch any individual person in the background, they're pretty much just running around, maybe skipping slowly around, sometimes just walking.
The only real acts of violence I saw in the video were the two shootings.
Maybe that's the true brilliance of the video, even though the only actual acts of violence were in the foreground, he still convinced these two guys that the whole video was full of violence.

1. He is showing how pop or any other music that's happy, covers the true meaning of what is happening in the real world.
2. the pants he wears throughout the video are confederate pants and as for the chains represent the bondage and enslavement of African American before the birth of the US.
3. next, is the way Gambino is moving he makes these weird facial expressions and body movements he trying to escape the make up reality.
4. when he shoots the man playing the guitar in the beginning. the pose that Gambino did was the Jim Crowe pose.
5. After he fired the gun, the tone shifts and the lyrics "This is America. Don't catch you slippin' up" follow. These statements reflect how America takes pride in being an open and free country, yet when the media's tight grip is loosed, the real picture of what goes on in the streets becomes apparent. The façade breaks down for just long enough for minorities to be the targets of injustices.

A group of teens come at and dance with him but it gets to a part we they do a dance called " Gwara gwara" it originated from South Africa. the move from South Africa has two very distinct meanings. Since the stanky leg dance was inspired by gwara gwara, it may be considered jokingly as another approach to incorporate a viral dance.
7. Next, if flips or pans to a group of choir members singing and dancing, as Gambino makes his way through the door a gun was passed to him and he shot the choir members this represent the shooting that have happened in church especially Charleston.
8. both I the beginning and after the choir members were shot the guns were carried on a red clothe, it shows that basically America cared more about guns then their own people.
9. Gambino dancing gleefully with children has a firm grip on our attention. However, concentrating on the background reveals a different tale. A man leaps off the ledge and onto a car as people are dancing. This behavior is a dig at American suicide. We are utterly devoted to the newest trend yet have become so desensitized to catastrophes occurring in the background every day.
10. now the camera pans up and to the side showing kids recording what is happening the lyric that is with this scene is "This is a celly, that's a tool. which means we basically living off of the internet and how social media holds on to us and younger people.
11.The kids then surround Gambino once more, this time paying more attention to him than to the clearly escalating chaos in the area. Death of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is the masked figure riding the horse in the backdrop. “And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him." -Revelation 6:8.

I saw an idea on a video breakdown, that the red cloth carefully handling the guns is a nod to the right wing conservatives. And the pants are similar to a civil war uniform and his beginning dance moves was an over reaction to Jim Crowe dancing and blackface.

I think the shooting was supposed to elicit that horrified response. I get an emotional lump in my chest every time I watch the gun shots. I think Childish Gambino really hit the nail on the head with something that's starting a conversation from all sides.
