This song is about the superstars of Andy Warhol's factory - the transvesite superstars Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling and Jackie Curtis. Also included is Joe Dallesandro (Little Joe). The song is basically a biography about them.
The instrument you are thinking of is a Double Bass, looks like a Cello, but Cello is Tenor where a Double Bass is....well Bass. Legend David Bowie played acoustic guitar and was a producer on this recording.

Those were brushes on the snare you were hearing. They are usually strands of very thin wire bunched all together to a handle and they are swept in a sideways motion along the surface of the snare in a rhythm but can also be used percussively on the snare. Gives a very nice effective sound. Used a lot in jazz.

Right…. The lyrics against a smooth melody is what made it a unique hit…… if something like it would been written today, it would be laughed outta the music industry… sadly.
You can just say it. Today's music (on the whole, as there are always exceptions) pales in comparison to music from last century. That's just a fact.

That bass line is an electric bass guitar and a double bass, double-tracked, and both played by Herbie Flowers. He only received a flat, performer, fee for this - I think it was around £50 and that was it. Also, the drums are being played using a wire brush.

This song well captures the artsy transvestite Warhol scene that prevailed in New York's lower east side (many called themselves loweassida's) through the 60's. Today, this kind of stuff is fairly mainstream, isn't it?

Yeah, there's some humor there. Lou was singing about people that he'd gotten to know in connection with Andy Warhol's Factory. Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, and Jackie Curtis, well, to call them "trans" would be too simple, but they always presented as women. Joe Dallasandro started out as a gay model in AMG's 8mm skin flicks before he hooked up with Warhol's factory. By then, some of AMG's films went further than just skin. I'm sure Little Joe actually did do some street hustling along the way, but he's pretty coy about what he was up to back then. There were several men that the Factory people called Sugar Plum Fairy because they were generous with their drugs. The best known I think was Joe Campbell. Lou Reed wasn't close friends with any of them, but he found them interesting enough to talk about in a cool song.
All the people in the song were in some of Andy Warhol's and Paul Morrissey's movies. Joe Campbell was in Warhol's My Hustler. Joe Dallasandro was in Warhol's Lonesome Cowboys and Morrissey's Flesh, Trash, Heat, Blood for Dracula, and Flesh for Frankenstein. Candy Darling and Jackie Curtis were in Morrissey's Flesh and Women in Revolt. Holly Woodlawn was in Trash and Women in Revolt. And some of Little Joe's AMG work still shows up on certain websites that host user-uploaded videos if you're into that sort of thing. I won't direct you to specific websites for the AMG material, but you can find it if you poke around using Joe Dallasandro's name, or just Little Joe.

That is a bass guitar. How can you have a musical reaction channel & not recognize a bass guitar? I am glad you liked the song, but calling someone call it “fire” or “nice” is not transformative content creation. Perhaps you should watch some other reactors who are crushing it and take notes: The Charismatic Voice, That Singer, Molly Boy, Dicodec, Polo Reacts, The Fairy Voice Mother, Beth Roars, Knox Hill, Chris Liepe the list goes on.
