What about Zero the kamikaze squirrel
An interesting one to look into for the future is Tempo on the Sega 32X. Most PC Genesis emulators should already run 32X games. Fusion does at least.
H
Moce
The music for Flink was pretty good on the Sega CD. I didn't know there was a vanilla version. It didn't translate well.
"The old man could read no more, for he had had a stroke."
Bubsy is one of those rare video games where more things in the game will kill you than in real life.
I like how little thought went into Bubsy being made a bobcat, like he glides (something literally no bobcat does), and is about as fragile as a literal soap bubble (when bobcats are usually though of as pretty scrappy critters), and yet he still constantly tries so hard to reassure you of how cool and sarcastic he is and how he definitely doesn't care that a fall distance of about seven pixels can obliterate him (okay, maybe more like twenty pixels, but you get the idea)
"WHAT-COULD-POSSIBLY-GO-WRONG!" (they knew)
"Failed Mascots" doesn't seem right. "Forgotten" is more accurate. Eartworm Jim didn't fail. There was enough interest in the character to justify four games and a TV show. It just didn't last.
Jim even got some comics, albeit a short lived run.
Well and to be fair is going to have a new game on a console no one would bye, but the creator just finished an indiegogo0 for the new comic book raising over $700k
maybe 'failed' is for ones that people didn't like
Earthworm Jim was never failed
More like Failed Mascots Who Could've Succeeded If They Weren't So Fucking Close To The Edge Of The Screen
A bunch of zombies watching a bunch of clowns. Sounds like a usual day on twitter
Based
@Mia Wu Ronald Mcdonald said this
It seems as if I am losing the argument. I know what to do! I'll type the clown emoji a couple of times.
@Mia Wu i dont even have twitter lmao
@@matthewfinger2381 like every other basic millenial who thinks spongebob and thanos memes are the peak of comedy
I've never heard of Ardy Lightfoot in my life, but I'm digging the character design. He's adorable!
Yeah this, he's great!
For real, he looks like a lost Disney cartoon.
apparently, unlike most of these, his game actually got pretty good reviews back in the day, although its extreme difficulty was also apparently noted. Might be part of why the game is so expensive now (which Vinny is right, that can definitely just be due to a physical game's rarity, but demand helps as well). It was developed by ASCII Corp, who are also known for RPG Maker, and the MSX computer
This segment should've been called "Smash Bros Wish List"
Yeah but no joke Dynamite Head would be cool in smash bros
Im hoping Earthworm Jim gets in but I also have doubts
Seems like a good title for a segment. I would've wished for Bubsy out of all of them to appear in Smash. (Well that and Bandana Dee.)
What if somebody got the rights to use ALL of the memorably-failed mascot characters in a Smash Bros. clone or something?
People think i'm stupid by wanting these obscure characters over Sora or Master Chief
A MOMENT OF PEDANTRY:
Dynamite Headdy wasn't meant to be a "mascot" character per-se (at least, to the extent of most of these others). Treasure at the time had a stringent "No Sequels" policy (which the idea of a sequel is mocked in the bonus ending!), so technically regardless of the game catching on or not in the public eye, there was no way it was gonna "fail".
Thank you for informing me of this! I've also learned that Decap Attack was a reskined game from Japan. I thought that Dynamite Headdy and Chuck D. Head were Sega mascots because they're often included in Sega Genesis compilations.
They made a sequel to Gunstar and Sin and Punishment later though.
Most of these games don't have mascots, just characters. They don't have a massive trademark behind them to push and often only have one game. The more fitting title would be "failed platformers" or "terrible and mediocre 16 bit games"
No comment in regard to your post but I love the irony that you have a Super Tempo avatar.
I want to see a band perform the Misadventures of Flink music with real instruments. I want to see the dead expression of the drummer hitting the snare twice a second. I want to see the harpsichord player get nauseous and throw up.
"This dude is supposed to be super super cool.
And he's super fast, and he rescues babes, and he's like super chill."
-Vinny 2019
Aero, Earthworm Jim, Decap Attack, and Dynamite Headdy are legit good.
Vinny should play Ristar, a character who should have got big. Great game.
George Wilson aero was ok but the control suck like you can jump on emeny
Earthworm Jim pretty good Little bit hard
Decap attack i seen never play
Agreed. I also think both Dynamite Headdy and Ristar should've had at least on good sequel
George Wilson I definitely agreed with everything you said! It would have been AMAZING if Ristar spawned a series with multiple sequels.
Whether an unpopular opinion or not, Ristar legit had one of the greatest soundtracks for the Sega Genesis. That game was DESERVING of more attention.
Boxes World That’s definitely not an unpopular opinion.
I just learned that there was a new Bubsy released like three months ago and still we don't get a gotdamn Croc 3.
DeadwingDork I miss Croc 😖
DeadwingDork I want a new Croc game, or a remake of Croc Legend Of The Gobbos!
DeadwingDork
Or a Banjo-Threeie
Or a Sonic Adventure 3
Or a Sonic Rush 3
Or a Vectorman 3
Or a Mega Man Legends 3
Or a Mega Man ZX 3
Or a MediEvil 3
Or a Super Monkey Ball 3
Or a Jet Set Radio 3
@@callumsparrow4379 There's something missing here.. But I can't place my finger on it..
Other mascot games I'd recommend, but they are probably already in the last 12 games he will play later:
- Cool Spot
- Vectorman
- Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel
- Ristar
- Kid Chameleon
- Chuck Rock
- Toki (Although it got a new game recently)
- Bubba n Stix
- Bubble and Squeak
- Sparkster
Most of these games are actually very good.
The Sega Saturn is also a gold mine for forgotten mascots: Astal, Clockwork Knight, Bug.
I'm telling you Vectorman was the shit. Vectorman 2 however was a bag of flaming dog shit.
Great list. Also Socket the Time Dominator.
Tempo for 32X
The music from the misadventures of flink is going to haunt me for the rest of my life along with granny cream's hot butter ice cream
Some games I’d recommend for a part two
-Gex
-Chuck Rock
-Wild Woody
-Bonk’s Adventure
-Jazz Jackrabbit
-Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
-Kao the Kangaroo
-Plok!
-Glover
-Blinx the Time Sweeper
-It’s Mr. Pants
Well sure but a number of those aren't really failed, just products of their time. Gex, Ty, Glover, Jazz Jackrabbit, they had their time and place. I believe the first of those three reached greatest hits status and Jazz Jackrabbit is well known to PC platforming communities. Still interesting games to look at nonetheless.
I don't think Blinx the Timesweeper would be possible because that's on the Xbox and im not to sure anyone is familiar with setting up a OG Xbox emulator as far as i'm concern.
Who the hecc is Mr. Pants-
@MrDmoney156 Doesn't look like Blinx works very well on current Xbox emulators. It can be played on the Xbox One but he'd have to buy it.
Blinx didn't fail, Blinx was forcibly thrown off the cliff and i shall take my revenge on the Microsoft by pirating their every product
Possum: *Dies and literally decomposes*
Binyot: "I'M A LOATHSOME CU-
Possum: "I'm back"
He done censored Vin
awesome possum saves the kids
Kleets is the most kickable face of all time
I have the same feelings for B.O.B. lots of good memories with my father playing that game. RIP Dad.
I’d say that if a mascot is less known than Earthworm Jim, it’s failed, while if it’s more known, it’s at least okay.
Somebody please trick Vinny into playing Ecco the dolphin
oh god yes please
We need him to hear the sound of Ecco taking damage.
He'd have an aneurysm trying to figure out what to do
Ardy Light Foot is legit a Super Nintendo hidden gem. It has a full story, cutscenes and set pieces, the creators really put some love into the game and it shows.
Seeing that "Titus Presents" logo worried me for nothing.
34:27 dont watch jon anymore but the fact vin had almost the same exact reaction to fall damage in bubsy gets me
I watch Jon all the time. He's great!
I'm still amazed Vinny saw and responded to my Chrono Trigger remark. Lol
His chrono trigger senses were tingling
Failed Mascots? Does Mighty Number 9 count then?
Also the three vikings guy Blizzard made a while back, before Warcraft or Starcraft
TheJediSonic to early
TheJediSonic to Young
ha ha shots fired!
21:08 Vinny showing B.O.B took me back to when i used to play it when i was a child. I got hella exited watching the stream.
Also if Part 2 of failed mascots happen,i would love to see Plok
I loved Plok so much. I got it in a bargain bin when I was a kid, just because I liked the look of the box. It was flawed, and I could see it even as a kid. But damn it was so unique and so fun and colorful. I agree, I would love to see Vinny react to it. it probably aged poorly for someone who didn't play it then though.
Hell yes. Hope he mentions the webcomic as well if he plays the game.
I believe that I put Plok in the pack. I sent this to Vinny back in April, so my memory is a bit foggy.
I want to see Vinny play Plok if only to hear him flip out over the insane Tim Follin soundtrack.
hot take: B.O.B is better on the genesis
The word "soccer" was used in the UK to describe Football well before it was used in the US. People tend not to remember that.
"Soccer" is a shortened word for "Association" if I remember it correctly
Vsauce and Vinesauce should collab
@@ThePablosin1 Lol nice idea
Dynamite Headdy looked so awesome. Maybe not to play, but the visuals and animations are fantastic.
Nah I recommend trying Headdy if you like retro games. I did and now I love it !
1:08:19 "This is absolutely beans" And there's a can of beans on screen.
Holy shit that thumbnail tho... o__o
Bubsy 2 where he travels through time via those portals was one of my fondest memories as a baby since my family owned a cat at the time that was the same color.
I have no idea why, but Ardy Lightfoot slapping a statue softly in the face is one of the funniest things I've ever seen
Did you know Coca-Cola Japan had a exclusive mascot once? It's the *Coca-Cola Kid!* He's a skate kid which beat up his enemies around Japan by throwing disc plates on them! He even got a Game Gear game!
He's the Sonic to Pepsiman's Mario, literally
The sacred 3:
PepsiCo=Pepsiman
Coca-Cola=Coca Cola Kid
7-Up=Cool Spot
It feels like a cardinal sin of platformer is having your main weapon have limited ammo.
Meh. It can be fun if executed right.
Some Failed Mascots were so good yet promising, i have to admit. Ardy Lightfoot, Dynamite Headdy, High Seas Havoc and etc... They had their own quirks despite of being mario/sonic wannabe. I quote hope they could come back sooner or later.
The fact that bubsy takes falling damage because the joke is that cats are afraid of heights makes me wonder why he is even considered a "mascot" as he should be called a walking talking cat joke
Man I hope Vinny will play Klonoa next mascot stream. I freaking love that game to death
The guy who made Normy, Keith Robinson, used to work on games for the Intellivision. He also made more cartoons of Normy until 2017.
Will all these failed mascots have their own brawler game? We’ll call it Super Smash... Others?
Then ten years later, when new mascots have come and failed for a few more console generations, comes the release of *Super Smash Others: All,* with the tag line "Everybody is present."
I don't know about any of the others, but Earthworm Jim definitely has potential to be featured. Hell, he's made a cameo in Clayfighter 63 1/3 and he was playable. They can actually put him in there.
@@TheBigDynamo I think you might have missed the joke.
@@KaeraNeko damn. Regardless, it would be pretty cool seeing Jim in smash brothers
@@TheBigDynamo Yeah, totally! :)
High Seas Havoc is a legit good game
It’s one of the best Sonic knock-offs. It also has a great soundtrack.
THE FUCKIING GIGGLE VINNY DOES AT 1:20 AFTER READING KID CLEET IS FUNNIER THAN THE NAME ITSELF
1:23:26
Normandy Beach Babe-O-Rama
Make it happen, people.
Damn that circus remix bangs
Today you've got Cuphead, Hat Kid, the Inklings to a lesser extent, Shantae, Shovel Knight, and weirdly enough, Isaac, from the Binding of Isaac.
I'm pretty sure there's more, but I can't remember.
I wouldn't exactly call them failed. Who cameoed in Blade Strangers? Not Bubsy, that's for sure.
@@BBHood217 Isaac in blade strangers? I men Nicalis did publish the game so it makes sense
@@BBHood217 I'm not saying those are failed. I'm saying those are mascots we have today.
The Kid Squids are the Inklings (Splatoon), but they aren't the mascot of Nintendo (It's still Mario), They are also customizable characters in the franchise, they are charismatic due to the immense fandom they have had.
@@ofihombre Thanks for the clarification. I'll edit that now.
Bubsy got what, 5 games? 1 of them recent. That's more than many series can say.
And also precisely as many as F-Zero (if you consider F-Zero GX and AX to be the same game).
I just realized Bubsy has more games than the MOTHER series
end me
@@Darisprites Eh, one's made by a passionate creator who was finished with it and had nothing else and another well same thing had a passionate creator but he left and then series keep going because no idea
Meh. It got 4 games before Accolade went bust and then it got two reskins of pre-existing games. Overall, not that much.
@@Darisprites Quality over quantity
Hey, "The Misadventures of Flink"! Seeing that makes me realise how Lomax, another platformer by Psygnosis, is built on basically the same engine with some improvements. Also, the pixel art is done by one Henk Nieborg. I really like his art, though Lomax does look much more colourful.
Gonna give this one a whirl
Lots of Commodore Amiga love this stream.
Oh man, Earthworm Jim. My childhood. I was never able to get past the...3rd level? The honeycomb planet one. But that was before I knew that you could look up walkthroughs and waay before we had internet
The misadventures of flink had a sick prog soundtrack. I could listen to that all day
Lester the Unlikely is basically Out of the World, but on Earth
It's basically Out of the World, but in the world
Man, I love the majority of those games
Vinny for the next mascots stream play Bonk's adventure! It's bizarre and you'll love it!
...You know, "playing Kid Kleet" sounds suspiciously illegal. Don't say that again.
Keed klit
Oh shit, I just remember a game from my childhood. I played Kid Kleets once or twice and I remember liking it and being very interested with the gameplay but then completely forgot that it even exists.
I would recommend Vinny to try out Jazz Jackrabbit and it's sequel. I don't know about the first game, but i remember second game being pretty good. Also, both of these games had fantastic music!
Oh, Aero the Acrobat, my friend had that game back in the day. We could never get past the first few levels, but I do remember always liking the music. I do seem to remember the controls not being the greatest, like Vinny described here, but still overall not too bad of a game.
Fun fact (if it wasn't mentioned in the video; I haven't reached that bit yet): Earthworm Jim was created by the same guy partially behind The Neverhood, Doug TenNaple. He also has made some pretty good comics, too.
Dynamite Headdy is my absolute favorite game of all time, you should play it through some time
Facts
Yes Vinny do a playthrough sometime...
That game's awesome!!
That game is downright awesome. One of the few Genesis gems I keep replaying
Considering Bubsy gets more new games than Banjo does id say hes doing pretty good for himself.
"new games"
>games
You mean reskins of pre-existing games?
You know what, since Billionsoft can't put Bubsy into proper use, I might as well make a game myself.
Yeah but Bubsy 3D
misadventures of flink had a sega cd remake with improved gameplay and soundtrack, also there is a sequel called Adventures of Lomax which is a Lemmings spin-off
I love how zool has the same crash noise used in rtc
Dude we had that beach babe game with the hipster that collects hacky sacks! That tune was so familiar and after the first continue, it was obvious we had it. :P
That lightfoot game is probably more expensive on eBay because it didn't sell well originally and thus there are less copies around. It would make sense since it had some sort of charm and personality to it beyond "whoaugh thas' the attitude of a mascot".
I'm honestly impressed with the music I heard in it - it's comparable in quality to a Mana game or Terranigma
Vinny should play the original Yo! Noid for the next Failed Mascots (and yes I know he corrupted it at one point)
I kinda wish animal mascot games were more common nowadays
Mystic System yeach me here
Headdy has one of the greatest Genesis soundtracks.
I'm not sure if it counts, but I'd love to see Vinny play Tin Star on one of these streams.
Holy crap, i've used to play Kid Kleets (aka Soccer Kid), Aero the Acro-Bat, Boogerman and Earthworm Jim as a kid
but Earthworm Jim is one i had the actual cartridge if i recall correctly, everything else was on the PS2 "SNES Station"
Either Super Mario World or Aero the Acrobat were the first game I ever played.
The gameplay is stiff but the music is amazing. We had 2 as well. 2 is a huge improvement. The animation is really smooth and expressive, and the controls are a lot better and smoother as well.
I'd love to see an Aero the Acrobat reboot some day
I need to play 2 then, cause I loved 1 as a kid. I'll check it out.
Aero 2 was a great game
Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel is a spinoff related to the Aero games.
Can’t wait to hear all the siIvagunner rips
Yo play Glover for the n64. That was a really epic failed mascot
Is High Seas Havoc the prequel to Sonic Riders where you play as Wavr
I love the first two Earthworm Jim games and cartoon. I'm interested in the new comic book and the new game. I just hope they port the new game to other platforms.
holy shit, I got the same reaction as Vinny playing that Bob game. Im sure I've rented that game at some point and I remember just crawling around punching things because bab brain wasted all my bullets immediately as i got them
This video gives me a recommended list of like every automated children's show.
John Fullsauce what have you done?
Watching the boogerman part reminded me of the ripping friends, one of John K early 2000’s shows
I wanna see Vinny do a full playthrough of Dynamite Headdy.
"The princess, AKA the trophy."
lol
Based and vinepilled
Mr. Nutz is a platform game done right and i love it 😊
It gets really hard in later levels and the bosses are scary for a kids game.
Vinny should try a Dynamite Headdy playthrough or at least give it a solid hour or two, I think he might enjoy it.
High Seas Havoc
was a game I loved and hated. The difficulty of the bosses got mega hard in the later levels. Never managed to beat it. James Pond was actually a relative success - it had 3 games and I think Olympics Games-style althetics spin-off. James Pond 3: Operation Starfish was another really fun game with lots of levels and features. Kid Kleets reminded me of Marco's Magic Football, but looks like a much worse version of it (and no bonus of the ball returning after a short while).
There's a RUclips Poop of those that had THIS VIDEO CONTAINS as a title that had a very catchy music... Now after like 10 years I realize that tune was from Zool
Also the Lester the Unlikely music makes me remember those Dolan videos
I love HIgh Seas Havoc and Dymantie Heddy. I recommend trying out Jazz Jackrabbit.
When you jump on enemies in The Misadventures of Fink, it makes The Hand/The World noise.
Some of these games have some fucking awesome soundtracks, like Ardy Lightfoot and Decap Attack
I recall Ty the Tasmanian Tiger being pretty neat. Albeit a mouthful to say.
KROME has also released all 3 games on Steam. There is a Ty 4 but its a 2D game and some animations feel a bit weak.
Anyone else hoping that Vinny plays Plok in the next stream?
Yeah, but I bet he'll have a hard time, it's a tough unforgiving game. I think it's pretty good though.
I'm hoping he says something about the music.
I'm expecting it. Even though like some of the others here he's not really a mascot. Failed or not.
I hope Vectorman and Jersey Devil show up on this list at some point. Also Decap attack wasn't an attempt at a mascot, perse. It's a Mario 2 situation of a completely different game reskinned to appeal to Western Audiences.
Gilbals is yes and no
I have a soft spot for Aero out of all of these. Aero the Acrobat and the 2nd game were my jams besides Sonic back in my childhood. But yeah, coming back to it, it doesn't play that smoothly, and the level designs feel kind of thrown together.
Yeah I really liked Aero 2. Didn't like the first one much though...
Flink music genuinely sounds like Cyriak's music except even more insanity inducing
00:20:59 God this takes me back. Not the greatest game ever but still pretty fun with a little patience.
Man the fucking nostalgia. So many blockbuster rentals of most of these. EWJ is my fav. Decap, Harley, Headdy. All it's missing is joe and Mac, or Sparkster. I really loved Harleys Humungous adventure. I know its crusty but I played so many games based off honey I shrunk the kids or the nes monster in my pocket idea simply because you were tiny in a huge world. I guess it reminded kids of playing with toys, but you could do more with video games to an extent, visually.
My stepdad used to binge Lester the Unlikely and still sees it as one of his guilty pleasures.
It is my singular goal in life to educate people, nauseated vinny!!!
4:19 Kid Kleets was made by a company based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire which makes the "Soccer Kid" name a bit odder
I used to play Earthworm Jim with my dad at my local farmer's market Zern's before there was a fire that closed the game store and eventually the whole market years later
RIP Eartheworm Jim. He beated Bubsy by just eating dirt.
I played an Argentine version of soccer kid when I was a kid, everything was argentine themed.
But I feel like it wasn't just a reskin, I feel like my version controlled better and the sprites didn't look so giant in relation to everything.
I was also always shit at videosgames so I think it was probably easier to control cuz I was able to beat it.
I've been searching for this game for 8 years already
Awesome Possum gives me severe headaches
Do yourself a favour and skip The Misadventures of Flink unless you want to see Vinny lose it because of stank music.
This music is straight up cyriak.
I'm really digging the sprite art though. If only it wasn't so grading to listen to.
I absolutely need to see it then
1:17:45
Mr. Nutz, the red squirrel hooked on heroin doomed to be extinct.
Sounds like a furry oc
I should point out that in our brief introduction to the character, we find Mr.Nutz has decided to go to Woody Land and pound some purple peaches. After some casual pounding, he soon discovers that he can split them clean in half if he shoots them with a nut.
Your enlightenment is now complete. Use this information wisely.
the virgin Lester vs. the chad Normy
Does Earthworm Jim count as failed? I mean, he had like...three games in all, one of which was 3D, and an animated cartoon that actually made it to air. And if I recall, Decap attack actually had his own comic book.
Also, James Pond 2 would have been a MUCH better example. Just sayin
