You’ve already picked up on a few things that some people miss because the “light-hearted” vibes distract them. For example, recognising the relevance of Sokka feeling like he is the only remaining ‘man’ in their small village, and son of the chief.

I vividly remember watching the pilot on TV as a kid, and the absolute electricity I felt when Katara called out Sokka for his sexism less than five minutes in. Like just hearing the girl character directly say it was immediately iconic to me at the time, I felt this show was something different.

As others have said, you pinned Sokka from the start - this show is a exploration of each of the characters personal growth and Sokkas growth is in his understanding of what it means to be a man, not the mysogynistic and untrusting brute, but someone who listens to others, takes charge when hes needed, and protects those that need it the most. Hes still comedic relief, but they dont just treat him as the bumbling idiot, he matures and becomes the warrior hes meant to be.

After a century without airbenders, most people aren’t prepared to battle one - no one has had any experience against them, and even when the Air Nomads were alive, their culture was one of peace. A lot of the airbender skillset was based in defensive or meditative maneuvers (or plain fun). Teamed with Aang’s youth, playfulness and humour, many people struggle to understand that mindset. For example, Zuko is very well-trained for battle but he’s never fought an airbender, plus Aang isn’t interested in directly fighting, so a lot of Zuko’s approach doesn’t apply well yet. Aang also isn’t fighting to necessarily win or cause pain, which is alien to many people after a century of the world being ruled in a brutal military fashion. Each time a character fights Aang after a first encounter, it's interesting to see what they have learned from their previous experience.

Yay! I’m so happy you’re watching ATLA!! I immediately warmed to Sokka when I first watched the show. “This is Appa my flying bison” “And this is Katara my flying sister” still makes me giggle. It was so interesting for you to note Sokka is a very serious character! Especially since he can be written off as the funny guy. (My man has jokes. And a boomerang.). He does go through a bit of a mini-character arc in these few episodes. Sokka’s belief woman shouldn’t fight and cannot be equal adversaries to men in combat is immediately questioned and harshly dismantled. He got his ass beat by a girl, it was a necessary and humbling experience. ATLA had nip that kind of thinking right in the bud. Sokka is a warrior, that’s his defining character trait. But we see he’s not very skilled in combat. He lacks the training, simple as that. But he’s got the heart and the spirit! He’s willing to put himself in the line of fire (literally lol) and defend his people, however he has a lot to learn. So seeing Sokka get on his knees and apologise to Suki (the Kyoshi Warrior) and ask for guidance and help in becoming a better warrior is so touching to me. He’s open and receptive to changing his ways which really speaks to how great of a character he is! Katara is compassionate, but she’s also unyielding. She strikes a wonderful balance. She stuck up for Aang in front of her entire Tribe just because she thought it was the right thing to do, and she doesn’t let her big brother (or anyone else) get away with talking down to her. An OG girlboss. We have to stan. Aang is trying to ignore his responsibilities a little bit at the moment (as you mentioned), and put off confronting the fact it’s been a 100 years. But the world has changed, there’s no denying it. There’s an ongoing war. And his entire culture and people are now dead. It’s horrible thing for a kid to go through, especially knowing as the Avatar it’s his duty to unite the four Nations. Zuko is character which pulls you in…even with the ponytail. I can’t speak more on it. My favourite is Book 3: Fire, after that Book 2: Earth. Because the show literally just gets better and better as it goes on.

Every once in a blue moon I am asked if I could only save one tv show from a fire, what would it be. Avatar the Last Airbender (ATLA) is always my answer. Authors use this show to talk about excellent writing and discuss things like plot, theme or character arcs. Parents and Teachers use this to open dialogue about tough situations. This show introduced me to philosophy in a beautiful way.
This is a show that even if it does not do well on the channel and you decide to stop reacting to it - you should still definitely watch it on your own time.
ATLA and The Legend of Korra (TLOK - Sequel Show) are some of my favorite pieces to story ever created.
The big thing that I tell new watchers is that ATLA is a lot like Lord of the Rings in the sense that some people struggle with Fellowship, as there is a lot of setup. ATLA is the same way. Season One is a lot of setup, Season Two is a lot of plot and training. Season Three takes everything from Season One and Two and wraps up everything in a way that you can't help but be impressed.
In an era where everything needs to have more seasons added, filler to increase run time, or meaningless side plots that go nowhere - it's a breath of fresh air to watch ATLA; as it had a start point and an end point from the beginning. They told the story they wanted, and ended it where it should have.

What a great reaction to the start of this series, honestly you picked up on so many details and you also weren't immediately irritated by some of the choices made by the creators while trying to make a primetime show on a children's network that also went beyond the norm and tried something innovative. I am often nervous about reactors watching this series. I know a lot of people struggle with the “younger” humour especially at the start of the show, and I watched it when it originally aired (I was the same age as the main characters) - as I’ve aged, I do understand that difficulty but I love this show so much. So so MUCH. I feel you need the light moments to balance out the extremely dark stories happening throughout the series. Even from these first few episodes, we are discussing grief, loss, war, honour, responsibility, power, and much darker themes - in a show that is "appropriate" for children. The creators didn’t try to undermine the intelligence or emotional range of their young viewers with this series - they did an incredible job expanding minds instead. It’s difficult to properly explain how much this show impacted my young mind, and how it continued to influence me every time I’ve rewatched it over the years ❤

I've been binging your vids 😂 and I've noticed this is the first one I've seen where *all* the questions you've been asking throughout will end up answered within the show itself, and you wouldn't need the comments to fill in the gaps, or are just plot holes you noticed. Looking forward to see how you enjoyed this whole series and what's next to come on the channel. 🙏🏽

I was there When it first aired and got hooked immediately.. It was agonizing having to wait a full week for the next 20m episode 😂
Fun fact: Momo was named right after taking a peach out of sokka's hands : In Japanese Momo is peach 😎

Aaaahhhhhh!!! I found your channel after watching your Hunger Games reactions. I really enjoyed your take so seeing this come up in my recommended today was so exciting! ATLA is my all time favorite show and I can’t wait to see what you think as you continue! Even if you don’t continue reacting to it, I hope you’re able to watch it on your own time. It’s such a masterpiece. Thanks for the content and everything you do!! Probably gonna binge your channel over the next few days.

Best show ever. Excellent world-building. Well-written villains. Exquisitely-measured lore drops. Welcome to excellence, my friend. New sub for ATLA.
Oh, those are otter-penguins. :) Appa is a manatee-bison hybrid. He flies by airbending. Sky Bison are the original airbenders.
By the way, you are (correctly) noticing the Star Wars homages and influences in the show. Pay attention to the credits and you'll see that many of the episodes in Book I were directed by none other than Dave Filoni. He left ATLA to work on Clone Wars.

I saw someone else comment this on a different video reacting to ATLA, but it was a good point so I'm going to reiterate it here:
Katara, when she messed up the waterbending move, didn't stop to try and figure out how to do it right- she wouldn't have time to, and it would risk them getting caught. So, instead, she adapted and turned to aim toward the firebenders and repeated the move, freezing them like how she accidentally froze Sokka. It really shows Katara's ingenuity and creativity. It's a great little bit of character writing in just a simple move.

    20:17 I think he'll answer that question
25:26 I'm always so happy that he says this because it's like
Despite the side he's on and his mission, he still has some opposition
30:50 exploded everything but kept Gyatso intact 😢
38:16 my favorite line of the episode
And Zuko's spin attack was my favorite move
39:44 Unagi means eel (and Momo means peach, which he stole from Sokka)

    • @thecocoacouch
      @thecocoacouch  Год назад +2

I actually see it more as an insult now in hindsight since we know Zuko has a strained relationship with his father and he probably said it from a place of insecurity (insulting Aang to make himself feel better about what his father did to him).

I hope you continue with this. I'm so looking forward to going on this journey with you.
I also think this show has a valuable lesson in it. Especially in the current world climate. People are just trying to live. Wars tend to shade the aggressors as the whole country being evil. But there is potential for good, bad and neutral in every person. No matter where they're from. We all have our stories and burdens. We all get pulled and dragged into the will of our countries leaders and their allies. We are all susceptible to propaganda. And loyalty to our home and family (while a valuable quality to have) can blind us to the humanity of people who are not apart of our home and family. This show frames this so well.

Welcome to one of the best shows you'll ever see. It starts slow as they world build and character build. The first part of the first season is more for kids, and it is kinda episodic. Around The Storm episode it starts to really lock in what the thrust of the show is all about. So, give it a little time.
