thank you so much for doing this. i saw you speak at the Edgemont Community Council zoom meeting and I just, like you said, truly need a book club to discuss all of this with others. I truly hope you can speak with current Edgemont and Scarsdale students and share this history with them. Let me know if I can help in any way.
You're welcome -- I know word has gotten out already somewhat. Next steps would be more interviews with *current* residents, and that would definitely include students, but I'm a little pressed for time right now.
Great content. I often feel pretty isolated here; it's great to learn more about the area. I've been in Edgemont for five yeas now. (just in front of the Cockburn house) I'm an author and journalist and have been working on a couple of small documentaries as well. (Also play guitar) Would love to talk with you about the area.
Hey thanks so much Jared! That's cool -- I'm happy to talk about it. I also know someone who's doing some Edgemont research as well. Anyway -- I'm at 10583history@gmail.com
Hi! To start I'm a white female born and raised in Scarsdale, NY my parents bought the house in '57 in the Edgewood area and had a father who was very much consistent with that of Archie Bunker's warped mentality. I am still devastated by my parents behavior the morning after I had a kid friend sleepover with a friend of mine who is 1/2 black and 1/2 Jewish. It effects me to this day. My opinion in its self is the wealthy kids of Scarsdale rate others on their financial worth. Thing is the kids used to say "Oh! You're from Edgewood? That's the getto of Scarsdale!" And I wish my dad was alive to see your video cuz he would find out a black man built his house on Barrry Road!😉TY
Hi! Really appreciate your videos! Are you by any chance interested in future video topic ideas? If yes I have an article about Bronxville from the 1950s I think you’d be very interested in (if you haven’t already seen!)
We ought be careful how we tell history when black people are mentioned. For example, to say "black people were UNDERREPRESENTED" is to engage in what can best be described as linguistic legerdemain. In other words, sugarcoating a reason for this "underrepresentation." So, it's my view that language used in this history telling should be straightforward language because black people on American soil will have a history far different from any other nonwhite population, including the Native American.
Perhaps contact Kathy Legg who lived on Saxon Woods Road during 50s and 60s. She attended Quaker Ridge School and Scarsdale High School and certainly knew the members of the Purdy families. I have her email address as kslegg@verizon.net, from one of our reunion lists.
Jordan, thank you. This was very interesting. It was so nice to see some old friends and to learn more about my home town and their experiences.
I'm so glad! I'm grateful for your participation and I (and others) learned a lot from hearing your story.
Excellent information.

As a student growing up in Scarsdale in the late 1940s and 1950s I wish important chapter in our heritage had been made available to us. Thank you!
You're welcome James! Better late than never!
