  • r/AmITheA**hole OP's wife is about nine months pregnant and is ready to give birth at any moment. OP has been understandably stressed about it, so he decides to go hang out with his friends for an evening. One of his friends is salty because OP missed his birthday party, so he decides to prank OP by hiding is cell phone for the night. Unfortunately, this happened to be the exact day that OP's wife gave birth, so he didn't catch the phone call and missed the birth of his son.

    I don't think OP in the first story should have gotten any Ahole points. Like yes, he searched for his phone for an hour which seems very ignorant, but you don't know how you're gonna react when in a panic and you don't think straight. Peer pressure is horrible and hard to put up with, especially when it comes from your friends! You trust your friends, you think "they wouldn't do anything bad to me" so when they start guilting you and pressuring you it can be really hard to see that honestly, that's kinda abusive of them to do to you, especially when you have something big coming up!
    He put faith and trust in his friends and one of them completely ripped that away from him and then all his other friends acted as if it wasn't a big deal!! Thats BS! OP did nothing wrong, his friends destroyed his trust and that's their fault, not his

    One important thing to remember about the first story: they had been panicky WRECKS about the upcoming birth for WEEKS. They mentioned that they weren't sure if every time she was cramping or sore she was going into labour. His friends had been complaining about missing him, not just the asshole brother in law. He decided to relax for a couple of hours with his best friends, something he likely really needed...and then his BIL took advantage of him. Took advantage of the fact that OP was away from his phone for a moment when that text came in. Because he was a selfish little pissbaby who was mad that he missed his birthday...because of the aforementioned panicking over the impending birth. Not only does OP NOT deserve an asshole score, but he is 100000% in the right to forbid his BIL from seeing his son. And honestly, the wife thinks HER HUSBAND is the asshole for his BIL doing this to him??? What the hell happened to "spouses should support each other"?? (honestly I can understand her not letting him in the room during the birth, emotions were high enough, but she should have forgiven him!)

    • @nutellacelery8830
      @nutellacelery8830 3 года назад +19

      OP didnt get an asshole score for forbidding the BIL from seeing the kid, he got an asshole score for not being more responsible. I get going to see your friends but he should have had his phone on him at all times. Especially when he's had multiple pregnancy scares already. Instead of looking for his phone for an hour, he should have just asked to borrow someone's phone or just driven back home. They're his friends and it was his BIL's farm so he could have just called back at a later date to get his phone back. I get being panicky but he could have been more responsible with his only source of communication. Also the wife didnt think OP was the asshole??? Lastly you clearly don't understand giving birth, how do you expect someone who's literally giving birth to forgive someone?? She was probably in the delivery room, in the process of it first of all so there was no time to explain. And it's not just "emotions are high", most people are complete messes during pregnancy. (There are literally grown women who cry for their mothers during pregnancy.) It's like "I'm mad at you and I dont have time to reason because im literally pushing a a living human out of my body". It's an insane amount of pressure, not to mention the pain. OP even says that she felt sorry for not letting him in the delivery room after he explained what happened with Austin to her.

    Honestly, rslash still berating OP in the first story for not having a picture-perfect response to a shitty situation reminds me how many times people forget that you don't think entirely perfectly in those situations. Tunnel vision is really common in panicked situations, and sometimes the idea of asking for someone else's phone to call and check completely leaves your mind.
    I can tangentially agree that maybe he should not have put his phone down, but he was there with friends, not at some big gathering! Who the hell would think that one of their FRIENDS, especially Austin who has apparently already had that moment of witnessing his own children's births, would hide his phone as a joke when THEY ALL KNEW HIS WIFE WAS EXPECTING A BABY?! Sure, I guess shame on him for assuming trust of his closest friends, I suppose.
    Imo, you can ONLY give OP flak with the power of hindsight. He clearly was doing everything to make sure he was ready to join his wife in the delivery room, but because this absolute awful excuse of a friend did what he did, eyes are still on OP for being there at all when they should all be on the friend who thought it would be funny to intentionally make him miss the birth of his first child.

    3rd Story : Yeah, kinda rude, dude clearly wanted to not share his joy with the one he shares his life with.
    4th Story : Receiving a bad rate because they didn't taught OP how to get a good one is a major redflag, they clearly want to control OP's behavior with guilt-tripping.
    5th Story : One thing I don't understand with Tiffany's behavior is that : She realized her parents abandonned her, right ? Adoption is a complex issue. They didn't abandon her. They made the decision to place her in another family and maybe it's thrilling to her to be with her biological family and perhaps she has a feeling of belonging for the first time. She shouldn't turn her back completely on her adoptive family but it's way more complex than people like to admit

    • @Starfloofle
      @Starfloofle 3 года назад +12

      I think we're missing too many details on Tiffany's story here. Very little got mentioned about WHAT her home life with her adoptive parents was like, it could very well be that something went wrong during her childhood with them and resentment kept building up; it could be their attitude, their beliefs, or maybe her own, maybe any of them may have an diagnosed disorder that affected something, anything that'd affect how they treated her, really. The dialogue I'm hearing sounds a lot like what I know from a friend of mine with Asperger's Syndrome whose adoptive family, well, tries, but is completely incapable of seeing eye-to-eye and supporting where it matters beyond essentials. That sort of difficulty should really be resolved with counseling and therapy when it manifests (usually in teen years) or else it will leave scars on a person's impression of their caretakers forever. Like they only supported you until started being an inconvenience. It sounds like she finally found the kinship and acceptance she felt she was denied by her adoptive family with her birthparents, and, while it'd be bittersweet for them, a parent who cared truly about their child's happiness would be happy they found a place to belong and be safe and happy.
      But I'd still give her 2/5 for stealing money though and being a general needless showboat with an attitude. If you're gonna burn the bridge just burn the damn bridge, don't lead people on like that, it's not good for them and it's not good for you. As far as the money goes, it'd be, like, only slightly different if it was like, gift or inheritance money and then she fucked off, in that, well, as much as yeah that'd be pretty dickish to do, if it was gifted/left to you (and you don't invalidate the will), it *is* your money now... But something like that, um, no, you're not entitled to that, that wasn't a gift, that was an exchange with a stipulation it'd be used for something specific... Someone petty enough could probably sue you over that in small claims or something.
      I don't think we have the information to pass any sort of judgement on her relation towards her adoptive family, except for that. That's worth a score, that's a crime and isn't subjective lol.
      But she 200% has a completely and entirely valid point about adoption. Earth's got way too many humans on it and the foster care system is an utter disaster, (At least in America, where I assume this story came from) the fact of the matter is that by choosing to save an existing life rather than make a new one, you reduce the world's total amount of suffering by an entire person's lifetime's worth. The decision to bring new life into the world should never, ever be taken lightly, and especially never done out of spite...

    The adoption story is sick. Her “real parents” abandoned her. And now that they got to skip all the troubles of raising a child they get to “reconnect” now that she’s a functional adult. I’ve seen this too many times. Luckily I’ve seen plenty more who either don’t even want to know or keep in touch with their bio parents but still know who the real parents are. As for as Tiffany shame on her for ruining adoption for a child that could’ve used it and she sounds like a disgusting person. I know it would hurt but I’d cut her off. She made her choice.

    About that guy who wanted to walk into “his” house alone... you called it right. He even made a point of saying how little his wife had contributed financially.
    When my husband and I had kids, we agreed I’d be a stay-st-home mom as long as we could afford it. He had a good paying job he enjoyed and was only moving higher every year in skills and in paycheck, so what with that and the fact that our 3 kids ended up just circumstantially born around 4 years apart, and the fact that every single one struggled in school due to either ADHD and Autism (which run in my family, me included) and the youngest has severe anxiety we’re still struggling to address, well, here I am 24 years later. The youngest ended up homeschooled because of panic attacks so I never really had the chance to work outside the home... I have too much work inside it!
    Add to that the fact that my own neurodivergence will probably be a huge struggle when I am able to consider working and my years of not being in a professional environment and, well... sometimes I feel like a terrible parasite. I feel like I’m spending someone else’s money, because I am. But my husband doesn’t see it that way. He says it’s our money. They’re our kids, it’s our apartment. We’ve been married for 28 years but he felt the same at 6 months, though we had a much harder time communicating back then. Early marriage has a lot of growing pains. And while I still struggle with feeling like a burden, it would be much worse if he hadn’t stated that he feels otherwise.
    So if OP can pull his head out of his rear and do some thinking with it (his head, not his rear), it’s not a lost cause. She hasn’t contributed much because they just got married. Unless they were dating for years and had agreed to save up for a house, how would she have been preparing for the same things as he was? Not everyone has the kind of career that produces a lot of money... my degree is in fine art, for example. If I work in that, probably I won’t be adding much to the bank account. So she’s the same way. Suddenly she’s less deserving because of it?
    These two need to sit down and talk, preferably with a counselor. They need to get on the same page about a lot of things. I think the failure to do that is part of what cracks a lot of promising marriages into pieces before they have a chance of lasting.

      We don't know much about them, why they gave Tiffany up for adoption or even why they want her back now.

I've heard too much stories on here, where the adults that were given up for adoption or pretty much abandoned as kids are approached by the biological parents years later, only to try and demand them for their money, their organs or wants them as their free live in baby sitter to their other kids.
      To me, this story pretty much sounds like Tiffany's parents didn't want ANYTHING with the "Parental Responsibilities", so they had the uncle and aunt raise her. Then when she's an adult, the parents swooped in and took Tiff under their wings, filling her head with toxic lies and giving her lavish gifts and such. Why? My guess is that they probably want money from her, or to use her as a kind of trophy to parade around with, brag about and whatnot.

      Agreed, it’s a good thing that Rslash’s takes have gotten better, but this is such a shit job that he’s done here 💀
      He gave Austin a 4/5.. for making someone miss the first birth of their first child EVER, for the reason that he missed one birthday of Austin? That’s self explanatory as to how bad of a job he did. The in-laws are A-holes for not even considering anything, but I actually don’t blame the wife imo. She was literally in labour, you can’t just ‘calm down’ and if you’re stressed out then you can’t think rationally either. What should’ve happened is that the in-laws should’ve heard him out, and passed it on to his wife because they were the only ones who could’ve done that, and yes they might’ve been rushing to make his wife comfortable but they were the only ones who could’ve been calm enough to listen.
      Rslash also gave OP a butthole score.. yikes. Just yikes, again another horrible take - and I am so glad that he’s improved but this was just.. no.
